I return after many decades to DESTROY a game from my past. And by DESTROY I mean finally complete it.
Elixir is a 1987 Superior Software game for the BBC Micro developed by Richard Williams, John Llewellyn and Chris Hyde and is an underrated gem.
I have a bit of a crush on Alec. Here is his Technology Connections video about flashbulbs:

Superior Software are still operating under the name Superior Interactive, focusing on converting some of their classic titles to Android. Check them out here:

If I remember correctly but don't quote me, it's been a while! but I think the eye shild gives you 1 shot protection from the flash bulbs! This was so nostalgic to watch, I never completed it either!! Great video I enjoyed every second!

You've got it! I just did a quick test and getting the eye-shield allows me to be hit by 3 flashbulbs without falling or losing a life. Fantastic information, thank you.

That looks bloody impossible to figure out. The angry video game nerd would say "it's one of those where-the-fk-do-you-go games." Did they include any hints or a map in the instruction manual or was everybody just figuring it out back then?

You weren't given a lot to work with. Some warnings about lipsticks and flashbulbs and the odd screenshot is all. Back then if you wanted a map you had to make it yourself - I still always have graph paper on hand just in case. But if you were lucky one of the gaming magazines of the time would print someone's map, though I never saw one for Elixir. It was mostly a case of getting familiar with the game and figuring it out from there. Pre-internet gaming was s bit of a wild time.
