Hey Corey and Randy, loved the first episode. I'm from Missoula and want to share some feedback as you asked. Topics I would be interested in hearing you discuss include: 1) Solo elk hunting, strategy, risk, meat packing, is this even possible? 2) How to meet good responsible hunting buddies in your area? 3) Spousal and marital advice for being gone hunting often. 4) Nuances of hunting elk in griz country when solo - for eg hiking before sunlight or after dark, calling, spooking or calling in bears on accident. Is this a thing in MT, or is it pretty safe to hike silently/call elk even alone in Griz country during darkness? How do you beat the fear of bears if this is just part of hunting Montana public lands! :D 5) Should new hunters shoot small game and non game animals for practice with dressing, skinning, shooting, and to be busy during off-season? Other ways to hone your skills? 6) Is there any way for someone like me, 30 y/0 Missoulian, to hunt with you Corey or you Randy? I hear your schedules but this would be a dream for any fan I'm sure, and definitely me! I enjoyed the discussion about hunting cows. In the area right out of my backdoor here in Wyoming, the last 3 years less than 100 people have applied for over 1000 cow tags on their first choice. I draw that cow tag every year without fail. Tasty elk dinners all year long!!!

Robert Brewer I'm seriously thinking about trying a Wyoming cow elk hunt. Non resident bull tags are getting expensive to eat. What time of year would you recommend?

That's a tough call. The area you plan to hunt can play a huge part. I hunt area 7. It is huge, and if you can wait long enough, I can always get one right around the first snow. My type 4 tag is good from Aug 15 till Dec 31.

The myth of fat causing heart disease was a good note Corey. Sugar is the real problem, but everyone is in denial to their sugar/carb addiction. Personally, the best I have felt in years being on the ketogenic diet. Randy, if your knee just started hurting...it may just need to be adjusted. Pain going up or down the stairs if really common with knee misalignments...I see it with my patients all the time. Arthritis could be another possibility...unless you hurt it somehow. (I am not diagnosing anything, just giving you some ideas)

I've been on Keto for about 8 months now. Just had my bloodwork done. Total Cholesterol stayed the same, LDL and Tri's went down and HDL (good cholesterol) went way up! My doc was pleasantly surprised.

I was helping a friend hunt AZ Unit 1 this past Dec (first week). We hunted along the eastern border of the Fort Apache Reservation... successfully! It'd be nice to see you film a Mount Baldy Wilderness hunt. If that's where you're hunting this coming season with llamas, just reply here: "Stay tuned folks..."

Awesome podcast! You were talking about hunting the vocal elk right after the first hour mark. In a future podcast could you talk about the strategy differences between hunting the vocal elk vs. the non-vocal elk?

Guys, I have a little bit of constructive criticism. I have to be honest that it was frustrating to me that you did not get to the point of actually talking about any specifics of elk or elk hunting for the first 45 minutes. I recommend that you knock out your sponsor reads in the first ten minutes, then get down to business! You both are a wealth of information and that is what listeners are tuning in for. Not small talk. Again, dont think im being a hater here. Im a fan of what you both do and am a die hard western archery elk hunter. I just think it is important to keep in mind that nowadays people have many listening options and you need to refine your product so that it delivers to a very specific audience. The only people tuning in here are elk hunters and that is what they want to hear about. I wish you the best and I will tune in again!

I suggest going over how to call elk (mew, bugle, etc.). Special guest maybe Steve Chappell. Also, I would like to hear more about peak rut hunting. What tactics should be used and "do's and don'ts", etc. I also hear that wind is very important, but how does one become a wind master? Seems that wind is one of the critical portions to elk hunting. I personally would like to know more. I also think it would be nice to know where you start on a hunt? (e-scouting, google, physically going there in person, etc.) Then talk about how often to scout and what to look for in July versus August, versus September/October, etc. For example, for hunters that do not live close to where they hunt so scouting regularly is not feasible. How often should someone go to the hunting area and scout? If a bull is found in July, he could be anywhere in September. So how do you plan for this? My buddy is hunting archery this year OTC Utah public land, (pre-rut) and we only have 4 days to do it. What do you suggest? No time to scout, limited time there, very public so lots of people, etc. How should we go about it? I know we are supposed to get away from roads, look for water/feed and shelter, but how long do we spend in one spot before we choose another?

Hey anyone, I am late to the party, just found this. I have been binge watching fresh tracks, and elk 101 so, want to try elk hunting. What would be a good call diaphragm and other types for someone who is just beginning? So many choices at Rocky Mountain Hunting Calls, and noticed a lot of intermediate and advanced, but did not see beginners.

You alluded to turning back a tag due to drought, but you might elaborate on how drought effects elk behavior and how you might change tactics in drought conditions. It will probably be a timely discussion for much of the west this year.

Something that I have had a hard time finding answers to is about diaphragm longjevity. I practice a lot while driving for work, and seem to go through a lot of diaphragms. How long would a typical diaphragm last during two weeks of lots of bugling.?

Jacob, diaphragm longevity is typically more a matter of care than of construction. There are three things that will kill the longevity of a diaphragm call - sunlight, moisture/saliva, and heat. If you can rinse the calls off after use, and then place them in a place where they are protected from direct sunlight and heat, and able to breathe so they can dry out, they should last for multiple uses. If they are left on the dash of a truck, or put away wet without a chance to properly dry out, sometimes they won’t last more than a day or two. Under normal use and care, you should be able to get at least a week or two of good use out of a diaphragm in the elk woods.

Elk101com good info. I have traditionally kept them in the fridge. So the cool and out of sunlight portion is covered. But it would be better to rinse let dry than store in the fridge. That’s what I’ll start doing. Thank You

Do Elk and Deer occupy the same territory? In other words, I glassed a bachelor group of elk, but I have deer tag for that unit. I did not see buck deer that day, although I did see some does. Do I have a good chance to find bucks in the same area where I saw the elk?

I think it has been mentioned before but you guys are rabbit-holing waaaaaaaay to much! The product you guys are putting out is fun for driving to and from work but if you want viewers to get the information you are wanting to present, cut the BS and get to it! Oh, and I know you guys want to be modest at your accomplishments but it got kind of cheesy how you downplayed how inept and "bad hunters" you are etc. We live in a society where the media emasculates men to the point where we can't even do a load of laundry without a female rolling her eyes and essentially saying "looks like I got to save the day again". Take pride in what you have done and accomplished! Yes, we've made mistakes and its good to learn from them but don't downplay and say that you are not good hunters!
