I met Randy at Gerber Knives here in Oregon years ago when my ex-wife worked there in HR. He's a class act guy and even being a 25+ year Backcountry Rafter and hunter and a WMI/NOLS W-EMT and a Medic he still taught me a fair few things and even took some advice from me. Great guy... and he's right about watching them make the knives and tools at Gerber. "Bear" Gryllis junk aside Gerber makes nice stuff when they make it here in the PNW.

Couple years ago we were scouting the weekend before season started and we had a herd of elk with multiple bulls and cows come right into our camp. We had a fire, camp food, and a dog with us and we found ourselves surrounded within 50 yards on all side by elk. They couldn’t have cared less about us. The next weekend they were nowhere to be found.

I love the podcast and could listen to you all talk about elk all day everyday. As a east coast hunter who had hunted elk twice this type of knowledge is invaluable. Thank you and continue the great work.

Really excited to hear some back country meal ideas. Besides mountain House! usually try to do some, but not all meals turn out. Especially dehydrated breakfast ideas. Would also enjoy one talking about processing in elk. Not in the field but once you get home. Cutting up in the field and going home and grinding burger is easy, but making a video on sticks, brats, jerky, ring bologna etc. would be great. Planning to do my elk completely by myself this year. Not sure on spices, amounts and packaging etc.

You two and the conversations you guys have are amazing. I’ve been listening to you from Kuwait and it just takes me away. I’ll be home in time for me to hit Montana and Idaho in the fall. Keep it up, really getting me fired up to hit the elk woods.

Loving the podcast guys! Some constructive criticism though... it was over 26 minutes to get through the sponsors. Maybe shorten that to the first 5-7 minutes? Just trying to be helpful. Keep up the great work fellas!

First time listening to you guys and I feel like I am learning a lot. I have used the thermals like you describe for years and I think it is one of the most important elements to be aware of when hunting. Randy mentioned that he hates the rain and heavy wind days but I think that they both can be used to your advantage. I have found that few elk will stay bedded for long in either condition. Often they come together on the same day or the same time. I like to hunt, well let me rephrase that, I have had good success hunting on nasty, rainy, swirling windy days. I believe that elk like to be comfortable and safe and during these conditions they are up and often on the move. Both scent and noise are diminished and if you are willing to work at it on those days it can be quite successful. Keep up the good talks and good success in the future.

McKenzie brothers of elk hunting. Love the info. Coming from deer stand world back east scentloc, sprays and ozonic are not gadgets. Like what Cory said if take cone down from 90deg to 60deg and get 10 yards closer why not? Randy have you tried ozonics mounted on a pack? That is my experiment for this year my buddies go direct downwind and are undetected.

Thanks for doing the podcast - I would take one every week rather than ever 2 - not that you're busy right? As a new hunter (33 and first hunt last year - Muzzleloader elk) I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. You guys talked about "gadgets" vs gear, but Randy says he'll try anything. Have you or anyone else reading this ever tried an Elk decoy? This will be my first year bow hunting and I thought it could help with a setup as I'll probably be calling/shooting by myself. Thoughts?

Corey and Randy both use decoys in different situations. A decoy is most useful when a bull just won't close the distance and needs that visual confirmation to come in close.

Great info, gentlemen. If I may make a suggestion...put the time where each topic is discussed in the info up top. Jockopodcast is a good example. Not that we don't love listening to the whole thing, but when we want to go back to something, it's easy to find. Thanks!

As a wind checker I dry out a milkweed pod slightly and utilize the fluffy inside because you can watch what your scent does 20 yards away and shows thermals sooooo much better.

I do the same thing. I save a patch in my field every year just to have fresh pods each year. You can see your scent for up to 50 yards in good terrain.

If I could give just one piece of advice. Get an egg timer and when you are doing a segment like this, set it to 20 minutes and when it goes off, you have to move on to the next item no matter what. Most professional podcasts have someone behind the scenes telling them to wrap up a segment and move on. I could do that for you if you'd like :-). Keep up the good work though boys and stay safe out there!

Everything I've read or watched on thermals says the opposite of what you guys are saying. You are saying thermals come downhill in the morning, but I'm seeing a lot to the contrary. Can someone set me straight?

I think the basic principal is that the sun hitting the hillside is what heats the ground and causes the thermals to shift. Sitting in a tree stand in the Midwest, that happens at sunrise. In the high county, it can be several hours after sunup for the sun to hit a hillside.
