Can you have a elkhound off a leash? I would love to have a elkhound but I am in Montana and deer around me all the time and I am worded if I get an elkhound I will not be able to have it off a leash.

I'm not the channel owner, but I'm a 2 time owner. My first was wonderful off the leash, never ran off and we had her on a farm frequently. Now I'm trying to train my first puppy ever, a 6mo old Elkhound... I hope I can get him to do the same lol.

Have had three male Elkhounds over the span of 38 years.Hunting with humans for 10,000 years the elkhound hunts unlike most hounds.He follows the sent of Moose ,bear and hunting in pairs or 3's. They corner prey , barking like they have though the hunt , always alerting their humans of their location.Sometimes 5 or 6 miles ahead of the human.They gotta be sharp , brave, and wonderfully independent with a real sense of humor.Favorite game to play is ...You Play The Prey and I;L Be the Elkhound..!!!! The dogs in this video are PLAYING the Elkhounds. favorite game !

Merge, I want to share something with you about this very topic. We had a miniature poodle that was super smart and very affectionate. My wife was particularly close with her. We came to a decision to get an Elkhound pup and have both dogs close. In the very beginning the little poodle would come right over to the Ellkie and stand up putting both her front legs on the other’s back. This was dominance and I tried not to read too much into it, but I was uneasy. As time progressed and the Elkhound got bigger, the tiny poodle would try and dominate the bigger dog every chance. Both were females and I think that was my worst error. It turned ugly because the poodle would try and steal food from the Elkhound and growl at her as often as she could. The bigger dog accepted it for a while, but began showing displeasure with being bossed around by a little poodle. One day at work I got a frantic call to get home. Apparently the little dog was preventing the bigger dog getting access to her food bowl. In the blink of an eye the Elkie clamped down on the poodles head and popped out an eye ball. What an uproar we were in. Until then the hound had been excellent and very loving with us, but it decided it had taken enough crap from the poodle. We had the poodle treated and discarded the eye. From then on the poodle was afraid of the Elkhound, but still wanted to tease her. I told my wife to pick one dog and get rid of the other. She was heartbroken and couldn’t make the choice. She told me it would be better now. It wasn’t. A couple months later we went to a family reunion in a rugged area in Southern Alberta in the mountains. It had been a long Day and drive. We checked into our cold dark cabin. I was trying to light the furnace laying on the floor. I had told my wife to feed the elkhound because she hadn’t eaten all day, and to be sure and not let the poodle out. I’m laying there with a flashlight and suddenly hear yelling. I turn the flashlight around and the elk hound had the little poodle by the scruff and it was all ready over. She snapped it’s neck and I could not find fault with the elk hound dog. She was hungry and the poodle trying to block access to the food dish was just being mean. The 2 animals were so different in size and temperament. So what a night that was.

@@canislupis3129 oh my gosh, I'm so so sorry for what happened!!!! I was just coming to watch elkhound videos. Have had 3 in my lifetime, 1st was an elkhound mix. I have had a puppy (M) with a elderly puggle (F). A puppy (M) with 2 elderly chihuahuas (M- just saying, I'd NEVER own one by choice tho lol!). Despite puppies having to learn boundaries, my elkhound pups have always done incredibly well with other dogs… that’s just so sad what happened with your poodle!! I’d be curious what a behavioral specialist would say about that situation. Did you ever go to one?? What ever happened with your elkhound, did you have to put it down?? Again, my condolences for your loss!! I know this comment is old, but still 💔

Nice video! I have a 6-7 month Elkie pup and we call her out Sour Patch kid. We're trying to work on the obedience training. Right now the biggest issues are barking and biting. The biting is playful, but she's not gentle with her bites like most other dogs I've had.

Steven Tyler hows that going
@sydneycory417 Жыл бұрын
Because it is a hound breed barking is apart of the dog. When they see someone in their territory they bark to notify their people that someone is up. With biting they are bred as hunters and need stimulation to help. Even if they are ‘play’ biting you need to correct that behaviour so they know it’s not ok. Because they will bite harder and harder because you have let them bite before. Giving them toys with food hidden inside can help keep them stimulated and also have something to chew on.

How’s your experience with female and male ? Any difference
@MervCarlson4 жыл бұрын
Hi There, no difference really in any real aspect as relating to things like, endurance, abilities to scout, hunt, hike, learn. I routinely run males and females together, both function literally like a team. In the mountains the males can do exactly what the females can do. So for the most part little to no difference in those aspects. Thank you, Merv
