It's always great to see young people enjoying the music of another era. As I child my family lived next door to the great Count Basie and we were very good friends. Through Count Basie my parents got to meet the royalties of Jazz, including Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme and others. Count Basie was not just a great musician and band leader, but was a true gentleman and an amazing human being and I miss him dearly.

1979 when mama gave you a dime and told you "Go outside and play, if anything happens the dime is to make a phone call home." 😂😂😂😂 Glad you truly enjoyed this. I love this performance: 2 legends at their best ❤❤❤❤❤❤

That number is from the Montreux Jazz Festival. Ella was the Queen of improv jams with her musicians and the Queen of Scat. I have had the privilege of seeing her with Duke and with Basie several times during her pride.

Jazz is in my soul & I Love this! It’s all about having fun as an artist & conveying love for ur art with us as the audience… that’s why Angelina Jordan is soo captivating, she “gets” it! 🙌🏻😎🎸🎼🫶 thank u sir…. I played jazz guitar with jazz group in downtown Denver bar Shaners when i was 8 yr old… i have no idea how i was allowed to be snuck in.. but it was a blast.

Awesome!! My HS is San Diego brought in Count Basie lead by Thad Jones -- Basie had already passed -- it was amazing. Went on, as a metal head/punk of the 80s to study Jazz Drums in college. You're a cool cat ❤❤

This is actually "C-Jam Blues," not "A-Tisker, A-Tasket," which is a song she made famous in the 1930s. If you like her here, she's even better 15-25 years before this when her voice was at its peak. By this time, she'd had a number of health problems, including open heart surgery and cataract surgery, and apparently back then whatever they during anesthesia was rough on the vocal chords, so her singing changed pretty significantly after that. She was nonetheless an amazing singer almost until her very last years and deserves all the flowers people throw at her feet even now. She is, IMO, our greatest singer.

Ella and the Count were already superstars in the 1930s. I also saw the Count around 1980s. This is a great demo in scatting, which is basically using the human voice to mimic a jazz instrumental. Don't be afraid to go deeper into the swing era, which had its golden age before World War II. Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald did so many albums together. Then the three great swing band leaders, the Count (Basie), the Duke (Ellington), and Benny Goodman, the King of Swing. Then anyone who worked with them, or covered their material.

You gotta find a local Big Band in your area, a good one (research) and go live: watch the horn section blow your mind. University of Houston will have a couple, I guarantee it. ❤❤❤❤

Ella is "scatting." Rumor is scatting was "invented" By Louis Armstrong because he was so drunk at a gig he just started scatting the words because he forgot them. Can't verify. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

That Armstrong invented scat while drunk is highly unlikely for a number of reasons. He was not known for being a drinker. He did smoke a lot of weed which is well documented. If you want to hear something funny listen to Louis’s version of Sweet Sue. He calls for one of his band members to sing the “viper” chorus. ( a viper being somebody who smokes weed). It’s seriously funny
