I am of Irish decent born in 1948 and I sang this song to my mother in front of a large audience when I was 12.
Thank you for recording this. It's so hard to find Scots versions, as most are Irish. My Grandmother was from Balloch and always sung this to us as kids. After she had a stroke she was bed ridden for three years and couldn't speak. But i would whisper the first line in her ear and she could sing the whole song right through. She died in 1994. Now it's 2022 and I'm looking after Mum who has late stage Alzheimer's. I've driven her up to Scotland and Loch Lomond three times in the last 12 months, and it's such a very special place. Playing this song to Mum, and seeing her sing along brings tears to my eyes. Chokes me up. Thank you for your beautiful rendition.

But come ye back when summer's in the meadow, Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow, It's I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow, Oh, Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so! But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying, If I am dead, as dead I well may be, You'll come and find the place where I am lying, And kneel and say an Ave there for me. And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me, And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be, For you will bend and tell me that you love me, And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me! Someone had to write the lyrics…
