The title translates as “Go, my love” or “Walk, My Love.” The lyrics are actually an Irish folk song about a young woman saying farewell to her lover, who is leaving to embark on a military career. What a beautiful melody!

close its more along the lines of the flight of the wild geese. Where in the treaty of Limerick some 12,000-20,000 (depending on source) soldiers of Ireland agreed to leave for military service in mainland Europe in exchange for guaranteed rights for the Irish back home after the Williamite War. Patrick Sarsfield signed it and shortly after signing the French fleet showed up to help the Irish, although Sarsfield refused ro continue the fight despite outcry believing in honor, and believing that he had negotiated a treaty to respect the rights of the Irish people and that it would be upheld. It never was, within weeks the British tore it up, replaced the protected rights with penal laws stripping the Irish Carholics of their land and removing every right of citizenship. "I’ll sell my rock, I’ll sell my reel I’ll sell my only spinning wheel to buy my love a sword of steel" She proclaims her willingness to virtually go broke in order to support her beloved and his new life. I’ll dye my petticoats, I’ll dye them red and it’s round the World I will beg for bread until my parents would wish me dead. The Irish brigade of France wore vivid red uniforms to show their support for the Catholic Stuarts. So she was wearing the colors that her beloved was wearing in the Irish brigade to shoe her support for him, all while having been stripped of her own citizen rights and being forced to beg. He didn't choose to leave, he was made a permanent exile. She was willing to give her life for freedom and love. It's a bittersweet hopeful cry that her lover will one day return, but knowing it is not likely That's the more traditional belief on it here

Then on another Meredyth on other sides of my family but not sure, and a Cosby of Queens ireland on the same side. and a Sikes (Lancaster or York), and Moore which is Irish similar to Mordha, but a Rowe (French origin) also. Though I have many heritages Anglo-Norman ( Danish and maybe mixed being decendent from comtes) and also Southern and Central Italian DeBartoli, De Sanctis or Santi. I like all of them.

Another Beautiful Rendition of a Historic Event and Song. Well done. Great presentation and voice. We are a film company and do many documentaries and do a lot of Action & SciFi as well. You have real Skill & Talent. You should act Ella. Thank You & Well Done, again. {"Siúil a Rún" is a traditional Irish song, sung from the point of view of a woman lamenting a lover who has embarked on a military career, and indicating her willingness to support him. The song has English language verses and an Irish language chorus, a style known as macaronic. The title (pronounced [ʃuːlʲ ə ɾˠuːnˠ]) translates to "go, my love" (or variants): siúil is an imperative, literally translating to "walk!", a rún is a term of endearment}.

Does she sell her body? Is that what dyeing her petticoats red implies?
@josephfitzhenry245
@josephfitzhenry245 4 жыл бұрын
@@aaroncarson1770 No, she most certainly did not sell her body. If a woman dyed her petticoats it indicated that she was betrothed to be married as a sign of loyalty to her absent lover. Legend holds that the tradition dates to the 13th century when Scotland's St Margaret said that a woman could propose to a man on the 29th of February (leap year) as long as she wore a red petticoat.

To both Fraser Mackenzie Production and Ella Roberts: I don't think I can articulate just how beautiful this is. What makes Ella and Fraser Mackenzie Production different from anyone else is not just the gorgeous cinematography, voice, and instrumentation, but how they are bringing back songs long forgotten to history. As an American, with Scottish and Irish blood (with a dash of German) I cannot understand the Gaelic words, though I would love to learn it, but one doesn't need to understand the Gaelic words to grasp the meaning and emotion of the song. Ella, keep up your splendid work. I feel that you surpass almost all of the musical superstars I know. Stay humble, for that is what separates the truly talented musicians. You remind me of what Brianna looks like in Diana Gabaldon's outlander books, even more than Sophie Skelton (she is beautiful too) from the show. Fraser Mackenzie, keep up the superb quality. The more historical significance of the songs, the better they are. Keep that up!

My only problem with the official translation is that the word for also is agus, and the word agus only appears once in the last voice refrain. In the official translation it appears twice in writing. Someone has added an extra =and=. Plus, I agree that the word for daughter can be used for the word for love, but in the context of a woman selling her spinning wheel for a sword for her love, that doesn’t make sense either.

I have never liked this song. My first time I heard it, it was by Celtic woman. While the women have lovely voices and stage presentation, it always seemed too “jiggy” and over produced for what the song was actually about. When others sing it, it was always too pitchy or breathy, leaning in to the emotion of the song too much. But this cover really did it for me. I’ve played this on repeat since you’ve uploaded it and because of that you’ve earned a subscriber.

Was in Iréland back in `88. And longed back ever since! The warmth, the hostility, the whole culture, and the country itself... Instantly fell in love! - And every time, i get to listen to the music, i dream back. "Fly" back to Limerick, Ennis, Belfast, Derry, Cliffs of Moher, and all the lovely memories with all them folks, i was lucky enough to meet.... Thanks for yet another reunion Ella! And the pleasure listening to Your truly gifted Voice!

@@kerriwilson7732 I'm certain the Gaelic population is largerly western Scotland, ie western isles and west coast. Largely with an older generation (grandparents-great grandparents) who english, although in the highlands it is sometimes taught in schools. I think it has been added to duolingo, so it might get a slight boost in popularity yet. As for the Indian comments, I found an article with someone born or living in Scotland attempting to learn their families language (hindi) and noting speakers mix words lost on them in hindi- technically 'hindlish' I suppose. Reminded me of older relations who keep mixing up english and gaelic in the one sentence as their mother tongue is partially lost on them. (text only, google A’ghailleann” On Language-Learning )

Is the Instrument at 0:44 minute a bagpipe or a kind of a flute. And if it is a flute, what kind? Thank you
@USCFan2448
@USCFan2448 4 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure it is Uillean Pipes. They are basically the Irish version of Bag Pipes but the bag is inflated with a bellow squeezed by one arm while squeezing the bag with the other. They are apparently an extremely difficult instrument to learn and master.

Tradional music gives you a unique cultural identify Most European music has become so eroded and no longer thriving because European musicians have lost their traditional cultural identities to cheap entertainment, commercialisation and materialism - motivated purposes, and anarchy-styled social tendencies of liberalism The mixture of European music and African strong dancing music has disorted the uniqueness of European traditional sounds leading to the current monotonous boredomness of today's European music
