It is my understanding that Nicholas II gave the march not to Mountbatten but rather to Alfonso XIII of Spain on the occasion of his marriage to Ena of Battenberg - when Mountbatten was just a young child. It was Alfonso who in 1922 (when Mountbatten in turn got married) passed the march on to him in memory of his Russian uncles Nicky and Serge (Serge having been I believe C-in-C of the Preobrazhensky). It is now, courtesy of Mountbatten, the Slow March of the Royal Marines.

I am a retired Soldier of the United States having served 32 years and during those years I came to know and truly like quite a number of Russian Individuals! I had sworn to "Defend the Constitution against all Enemies both foreign and domestic" but on the personal level we were expected to extend the equivalent of "sharing bread and salt" to our Soviet Guests and although it took a bit of time because they also had to fine tune their Cultural/Political programming....very interesting and honestly eye opening was OUR OWN cultural programming!?!.....I mean this might seem ridiculous to some of you younger readers but especially during the Cold War, unless you had actually met a Russian, the Media/Hype of the period evoked mental pictures of fucking KLINGONS for God's sake!?! It was during my time with our Russian Guests that I simply fell in love with this haunting yet at the same time blood stirring beautiful March!! This Hymn/March in my humble opinion truly captured the deepness and the strength of the Russian Soul forged through the centuries on the anvil of Human Destiny with the life blood and tears and sweat of Her Children as the essence to both Her sadness and beauty....as obviously propaganda as this clip is (nice touch fading to Mr. Putin at the end there....right after the fade-out of Peter the Great's picture.....😊)....I believe why not?! Russia has every right to feel proud of her accomplishments though I will probably be Trolled" for this but in my humble opinion and my opinion only, when I used to see incredible ideas come out of the Soviet Union, I marveled that they were able to do this DESPITE Communism and not because of it"!

Great presentation of a Russian classic. The first band performance of the march is about the way it should be played for parade marching. The choral episode gets the blood up, and the last band performance is about at the speed of a lively airborne shuffle! The orthodox chant at the beginning sets the stage for imagining Holy Russia in all its imperial splendor, Peter's elite Preobrajensky regiment leading the way.

You can say what you want and Putin is not so old as I am, but the former Red Army liberated my country (Finnmark - the most eastern and nothern areas in Norway) in 1944 from German occupation during WW2. Norwegian ships participated in the route between USA, England and Murmansk with heavy losses. During the Cold War I served in the Royal Norwegian Air Force and against the Soviet Union, but I think we had good relationships with a superpower nation. I like this music.

That sounds right. As a child, I remember my great-grandmother and that generation talking in whispers about "Nicky and Alex and their family". I think my grandfather mentioned that the march came from our Russian family via our Spanish relations. I believe he's referring to the introductory chorus, which is a hymn, and not to the march itself. That theme also appears in "1812 Overture" and "Marche Slav", by Tschaikovsky.

What a beautiful rendering of this famous march. Lord Mountbatten used this music as the signature theme of his biographical miniseries in the '60's. He said "My uncle, the Tsar gave it to me." I now associate this tune with Lord Louis, a great man, though I still wonder if such "appropriation"of famous music is legitimate?.

A very good march. Sounds vaguely Germanic, but it contains all the features of a good European march: makes a great marching song (if the band is missing) as well as a decent drinking song. In short, a morale builder that the troops can identify with. Nice presentation.

@bquadros The music is a hymn familiar to everyone in the Russian Orthodox Church. (I don't know its exact name.) You can find out by asking someone in the OCA (Orthodox Church of America). Tchaikovsky used it to symbolize traditional Russia. It's the equivalent of "My Country 'Tis of Thee."
