i love how you talk about things like personal goals/preferences. saying that its about what matches the version of femininity that resonates with her, instead of just what makes her "pass", is so important to distinguish. because for a lot of us its not about that. its not about just fitting in with stereotypes or whatever normal is. EVERYONE can have specific aesthetics they want to achieve, thats why even cis people get gender affirming care!

Just want to add a comment here: I understand why interviews and psychological wellness checks are necessary for transitioning people. However, the current system is failing them and many doctors conduct these test with no empathy or sensitivity. Not to mention the incredibly long wait times and limited surgical options (none of the surgeries Leah was gifted are available on the NHS). I’m not advocating for getting rid of such things, but reforming the system to be kinder and more humanising for people who are already going through an incredibly difficult experience. The NHS is an incredible service that we are privileged to have, but that doesn't mean it doesn't require reform in places. I added this in because I wanted people to understand Leah's POV on why she needed this collaboration with NANA and why many trans people set up gofundmes/save to go private despite the significant financial burden of that. I didn’t want the intro to be really long/yappy, but perhaps I cut out a bit too much because I think a few people are confused on my perspective haha. Hope this clarifies!

Every proffesional that has to make choices around anything trans, should look at the actual research about what it means to have a "female" vs "male" brain. How its actually a bellcurve and a spectrum. That when you look at brainscans of aab male "males" and "trans" you have a very high probability and accuracy, to be able to seperate them on brainscans alone, to a high degree. The "female" brain in a man's body and vice versa is true and scientifically proven! Sure nothing is black & white. There is sometimes mental health influence (apart from society's pressure when you identify as trans), how we define words and roles in society, our expectations, the influence of culture and our parents etc. etc. all might play a part. Most often when someone feels like the opposite gender than, what was not only assigned at birth, but also how they are perceived by others, they actually are what could be considered the other gender trapped in the wrong body. I believe our evolution and DNA pushes our personality and behaviour in different and perceivable ways, when it comes to how our sex influences our brains development. There are definitely also a lot of cultural influences on what we think of and define as "gender". The big problem is that our ape brains have a big need to put everything into neat little boxes. This is more or less true for different people. And it makes it difficult or impossible for some, to see people as the complex intertwined entities that they actually are. Unless you really take the time to learn, and get to know them, its easy to dehumanise them. I wish we were better able to take any individual just as they are. This goes for anyone who is outside of the norm of the perceiver ofc. No matter if you're trans, have autism, have different levels of melanin or anything that sets you apart from the other individual and their community. When you don't really understand how another human beings experiences their psyche, how they live their life and what/how they might feel, it is very easy to come to wrong conclusions, perceptions, judgements and then shun them. Or worse. People sometimes confuse empathy, compassion and sympathy. Empathy is the one where you are able to actually put yourself into the role, mindset and emotions of another person. When someone cannot understand (empathise with) another human being very well, that other human easily becomes "the other". This is leads to unknowns, which often lead to fear, hatred, bigotry and more😢. I myself are what you could consider (mostly) a cis white male slowly nearing his forties. Just for context*. Honestly I've had VERY different views, opinions and even some judgement when it came to transgenderism. Before I tried to educate myself on the subject. I'm quite an unlucky person, but one thing I got lucky with is that I'm able to easily change my whole (world) view, opinons and values when presented with new "truths". And I'm glad I'm able to understand what being trans actually means, and maybe even what it could be like, just a little bit. I wish we would teach kids on how to think like this (not tying your views, opinions and values too much to who you are) in schools, but that's a whoooole nother subject. Best of wishes to you, your sister and family. May your sisters path be filled with not many obstacles and be humane. And last but not least, I hope you get to experience much love, acceptance, connection and gratitude coming holidays! Also much love from an internet stranger, if you'll take it ❤.

I don't think anyone can fully understand unless / until they've been there. One of my friend's adult children (19 years old) was born female, identified as "they" and non-binary by age 17, then identified as male, but now identifies as female again. She never wanted any surgery, but if she had, it would have been a complex and difficult choice. She may still wish for it in the future. Everyone's experience is different and valid.

As a trans person, its a level of discomfort and pain I wouldn't wish on anyone else. We wait for years to save up and get letters from therapists, and take off of work, and have support systems to be able to help us post-surgery. I can't imagine any better way to show rather than tell just how important and life-saving these types of operations are for trans people. We go through hell and back again and many times we can't even admit to ourselves how hard it is because it would just break us and slow us down on the path of reaching for the person we want to be in this lifetime.

It changed her proportions quite a bit. Better to live with those changes for a while to see if she still wants it. I like the doctors am consistently amazed at the recovery speed of your sister. I remember it took me a couple of weeks for the swelling to go down enough to have the catheter removed after GRS. She's not the only one that says silly things during the anesthetic process, I remember asking for some of the relaxant (a powerful barbiturate) that I had pumped into me before surgery, I thought it was funny, I bet the anesthetist (who was lovely) had heard it many times before. I wish her a speedy recovery. Yes, the UK wait times (even with a supportive GP) are insane, I socially transitioned back in 2019 and by the end of 2022 all my medical transition was done. I went through a lower jaw surgery late spring this year where they cut open my cheeks along my jaw bone on the inside of my mouth and proceeded to cut through both sides of my lower jaw bone and then screwed it in place in a different position (so that it was where it should be, I had a significant overbite). That was purely for medical and functional reasons but jesus it was rough. I had several break downs while recovering because my face looked (literally) like a square from the swelling, so I can't imagine what it's like to go through cosmetic changes like that. Even if they are wanted changes, it is a lot to both recover and get used to. I understand at least what the recovery can be like and I would never go through something like that voluntarily. Incredibly big kudos to Leah for having the guts and bravery to go through something major like that. It must've been so scary, even if it is something she wanted. Mad respect and I hope when she looks in the mirror now that she sees herself, that self that was always inside, now on the outside too. You're both wonderful and thank you for sharing her journey !

And to clarify: Didn't mean I wouldn't do what she did in her place. I meant that after having gone through my surgery I would never want to go through that again personally. i recommend silicone scar gel, or even better - silicone scar sheet which would also help with preventing hypertrophic scaring, i think (but i don't know if the sheet can be put over the incision site right at the hair line), and also, my derma gave me Vbeam on the incision very soon after the initial healing, to counter the redness, and she told me that studies show that's the most effective time to get it. My incision was just for a lip lift. The laser didn't hurt, since i had incision numbness and couldn't feel anything. If you start getting hypertrophic scars (if it looks like it's gonna be lifted, or get that permanent look of swelling), go to derma, they can give you steroid injections to counter it

It looked like it would fully heal well but her curly hair will also help it blend in more if she ever worries about people seeing it. Thank you for letting us "come along" on such an amazing journey. Also a huge round of applause 👏 to the clinic that is able to provide all of this for you and your sister. I am a huge advocate for the NHS BUT it is completely unable to provide and understand the process that your sister needs - the red tape and roadblocks are horrendous and I really do think that men and women going through such battles have enough to deal with without the dehumanisation and the waiting and the complete lack of empathy the NHS has for them. It is definitely at the very least lacking in these areas and can add trauma to an already extremely difficult situation. Love to you both and please if you are able keep us posted on further progress ♡

I know all of this isn‘t easy to go through but it is all being done in such optimal conditions for you ( apart from the travel) that I am very happy that you have Nana backing you. Wishing Leah the best, you already gorgeous girl, Leah is lucky to have a sister like you.....xxxx from a 71 year old “Nana“

I would like to importantly note that sponsored surgeries like these will almost always have a very good experience and that the doctor you booked with will do the surgery themselves, usually. A paid surgery may be different and Korea especially have an issue with ghost doctors. So always be cautious and always do your research with diligence.

This is actually really important!! NANA films many of their surgeries just for reassurance that they do not use ghost doctors. They were actually the ones who informed us that this is unfortunately a real problem in Korea and it’s SO important to do your research if you’re choosing to get surgery 🫶
