Totally agree! The way she said the first word without an accent showed that she knows the correct pronounciation and is able to imitate sounds. She just speaks the latin way on purpose, being a latina I know I could do it effortlesly; but would be discriminated and made fun of. Even when I have a perfect pronounciation, I physically look latina and it causes prejudice sometimes.

I don’t think so. Just because you studied in English and lived there for several years doesn’t mean that you adapt accent. My Asian mom married a Dutch man, lived in Holland for ~30 years and still has a heavy accent and can’t pronounce all words. I think it heavily depends on your mother tongue. I can try to pronounce ‘ž’ all I want but I still sound funny apparently. I can’t pronounce ‘khrab’ in Thai either, despite being brought up with Thai and living in Thailand for several years. Dutch is my mother tongue. Shit’s a lot more complicated than “oh you’ve lived here and studied in English”.

As a trilingual person I can tell you that my personalities change when I speak another language. Also it’s really hard to speak another language when I know the word in 3 languages, I mix them up. Also I have to translate everything you say to my first language then find the answer in that language and then answer you in English. If Sofia felt offended or exploited, or if she felt Ellen was being racist, then she wouldn't be on the show so much. She obviously has nothing wrong with this and she didn't know the word either so? I still do English words of the day and I grew up in America, there are still words I don't know. We also did it in school. I speak Korean fluently and there are some words I can't pronounce and I get laughed at but I don't take offense to it, most people just think it's adorable so they laugh. I giggle and smile so big and give hugs and get all happy when I hear my friends who have accents pronounce words incorrectly and I also correct them if they look confused or are having trouble..
