Ellen White, Plagiarism and the Real Reasons People Leave the SDA Church

Hopefully this will be the last in my series answering the critics of Adventism as I believe this video, along with the others on the playlist, adequately covers the various criticisms made by people against the Remnant Church of Bible prophecy. In evangelism p 598 (ev 598. 1 She says Satan, who is the father of lies, deceived Adam in a similar way, telling him that he need not obey God, that he would not die if he transgressed the law But in 1 Timothy 2:14, which states that Adam was not deceived, but Eve was. Enjoyed your video! So many Christians, including many SDA's, do not understand God's law and how it functions. They think of it as the same as human imposed laws that require someone in authority to catch someone disobeying and then hand out punishment for disobedience. Then the guilty want some innocent one to take their punishment for them. God's moral law of love just like His other laws (gravity, respiration, etc.) have consequences built in. If I tie a bag over my head I will die, jump from a 10 story building I will die, disobey the law of love I will die. The wages of selfishness is death. When we learn this we will want to be brought back into harmony with the law of love and not trying to find a way to escape it as most Christians do. Jesus died to show us the results of sin (selfishness). He lived in perfect obedience to the law of self sacrificing love which we can now have applied to our hearts by the Holy Spirit if we so choose. Romans 5:10 That is healing salvation. I want the law written on my heart so I'm restored to love God with all my heart and others as myself. I don't want to run from it.

How can you have a son if your the same age? Meaning the Trinity takes away God's son and now the gospel is no more. God has no son to give.

The verse I think you are referencing is Gen 1:26 but the only being you will find in the image of God is his son. (Heb 1:3) Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person. There are not three eternal beings. There is one that had a son and they share their spirit with us. John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Great to see this topic discussed. There are lots of views already probably due to the title itself (that is how I found it). I think many Adventists don't fully understand why they have so many critics. They seem to be genuinely baffled as to why they have any opposition. D.M. Canright wrote in his preface to his book *THE LORD'S DAY FROM NEITHER CATHOLICS NOR PAGANS* : _"I have a high regard for my Advent brethren, and the most kindly feeling towards them. I know they are sincere, but am sure they are mistaken in their views about the Sabbath and the Lord's Day. _*_Their widespread and aggressive agitation_*_ of these subjects will result in a better understanding of these questions. This book is not written to convert Adventists, but to defend our own faith. If they would let our members alone, we would say nothing; but _*_we would be recreant to our duty if we kept still while they publicly denounce us as pagans and papists_*_ and then go from house to house among our Christian members with their literature and Bible readings to proselyte them to their erroneous views."_ (p3) In other words, Adventists are the aggressors. Critics are left no choice but to either surrender to the attacks SDAs levy or to give push-back. Many Adventists are aware of the likes, of Canright, Walter Rae, Desmond Ford and others, but rarely do they ever read their actual material or arguments. Instead they will turn to the Adventist apologists first, reading inhouse books on the subject which automatically dismiss the critics as not being worthy to waist time on. Even within this video, the critics Adventist theology are treated as if they are offering nothing more than the same old tired arguments Canright brought forth, as if his points of contention with Adventist doctrine have been answered successfully by Adventist apologists already. This is not the case at all with the majority of critics who offer polemics. Plenty of Adventist critics have come to the same conclusions *independent of ever reading material from Canright* . This means that the arguments themselves are universally seen by the critics of Adventism, and not merely the product of hand-me-down diatribes from the "Father of Ellen White Criticisms". No doubt Canright saw the problems we all see, he just did it way back in 1889, and plenty of former-Adventists left long before he did for similar reasons. The 1888 conference was just one manifestation of internal crisis going on at the time. But there is so much more, and *it is these other arguments* themselves that must be addressed. This is why it is incumbent upon a sincere Adventist apologist to fully know what the actual arguments from opponents are not rely on the internal books that preach to the choir what like _"Prophet of Destiny"_ or _"The Prophet and Her Critics"_ . A good student seeking to really understand what the arguments of the SDA critics are will actually read the opposing views and material for themselves, and not merely rely on some other Adventist apologist's dismissal of them. Ask yourself, how many SDAs do you know who have actually read Walter Rae's _The White Lie_ or, DM Canright's _Seventh-day Adventism RENOUNCED_ , or any other book that might have differences with SDA theology, like Dale Ratzlaff's _Sabbath in Christ_ ? The answer: Very few. Let's see some marker highlighting in some of these books by the critics of Adventism.

I was once at a pastors retreat where the guest speaker, Adventist theologian Herbert Douglass, mentioned Desmond Ford. He said though he didn't agree with Ford, whom he personally knew, he still loved him as a brother in Christ.

In 35+ years as an Adventist, I am quite sure all the reasons given fit into one of the three categories I mention in this video. I am here to preach Bible truth on various topics and the videos on this subject that I've done in the last 8 months represent a detour that I now want to end. My next video will not be answering any objections but will instead teach a Bible topic from a positive perspective.

@@lesmillman I understand. I really do. These authors are dangerous to read. Many people left the denomination in the mid-1980's after reading Walter Rae's _The White Lie_ , including myself. Also, many people were rightfully bothered when Desmond Ford was dismissed from ministry in the Adventist church in 1980, following his critique of the church's investigative judgment teaching. In a certain way it was a perfect storm, a time where many people were asking questions with no good answers.

I have noticed in her earlier writings she seems to write only on the Father and Son, not the Spirit. As to her own views on the subject I do not know the details. As for me, the first and only time I read a Jehovah's Witnesses pamphlet I cast it aside as soon as it started to trash the Trinity. We are Trinitarians, though a small fringe within our ranks are not.

In the early writings the Holy Spirit is often referred to as an "it" rather than with the pronoun "He". The early Adventist view appears to be Binitarian -- where the Father and the Son are divine but the Holy Spirit is a force rather than a person.

I would like to make a point about the Writings of E.G. White which is going to upset a lot of SDA members. You've shown a quote from Early Writings and I have to say this, Ellen White DID NOT author the Book Early writings, neither the books 1888 nor 1911 Great Controversy, Patriarchs and Prophets, Prophets and Kings. If you're upset by this, and I'm sure some of you are, I would ask you this question; how many of you have read carefully the books mentioned? Do you read your Bible carefully. If you've answered yes, then why have you not picked up on the mistakes that are in these books? Another point needed to be made, and this is a very important point, and I will let Ellen White make it herself. It's rather long but worth looking at. -481- {SpM 480.2} Some have stumbled over the fact that I said I did not claim to be a prophet; and they have asked, "Why is this?" {SpM 481.1} I have had no claims to make, only that I am instructed that I am the Lord's messenger; that he called me in my youth to be his messenger, to receive his word, and to give a clear and decided message in the name of the Lord Jesus. {SpM 481.2} Early in my youth I was asked several times, Are you a prophet? I have ever responded, I am the Lord's messenger. I know that many have called me a prophet, but I have made no claim to this title. My Saviour declared me to be his messenger. "Your work," he instructed me, "is to bear my word. Strange things will arise, and in your youth I set you apart to bear the message to the erring ones, to carry the word before unbelievers, and with pen and voice to reprove from the Word actions that are not right. Exhort from the Word. I will make my Word open to you. It shall not be as a strange language. In the true eloquence of simplicity, with voice and pen, the messages that I give shall be heard from one who has never learned in the schools. My Spirit and my power shall be with you. {SpM 481.3} "Be not afraid of man, for my shield shall protect you. It is not you that speaketh; it is the Lord that giveth the messages of warning and reproof. Never deviate from the truth under any circumstances. Give the light I shall give you. The messages for these last days shall be written in books, and shall stand immortalized, to testify against those who have once rejoiced in the light, but who have been led to give it up because of the seductive influences of evil." {SpM 481.4} Why have I not claimed to be a prophet?--Because in these days many who boldly claim that they are prophets, are a reproach to the cause of Christ; and because my work includes much more than the word "prophet" signifies. {SpM 481.5} When this work was first given me, I begged the Lord to lay the burden on some one else. The work was so large and broad and deep that I feared I could not do it. But by his Holy Spirit the Lord has enabled me to perform the work which he gave me to do. {SpM 481.6} God has made plain to me the various ways in which he would use me to carry forward a special work. Visions have been given me, with the promise, "If you deliver the messages faithfully and endure to the end, you shall eat of the fruit of the tree of life, and drink of the water of the river of life." {SpM 481.7} The Lord gave me great light on health reform. In connection with my husband, I was to be a medical missionary worker. I was to act an example to the church by taking the sick to my home and caring for them. This I have done, giving the women and children vigorous treatment. I was also to speak on the subject of Christian temperance, as the Lord's appointed messenger. I engaged heartily in this work, and spoke to large assemblies on temperance in its broadest and truest sense. -482- {SpM 481.8} I was instructed that I must ever urge upon those who profess to believe the truth, the necessity of practising the truth. This means sanctification, and sanctification means the culture and training of every capability for the Lord's service. {SpM 482.1} I was charged not to neglect or pass by those who were being wronged. I was especially charged to protect against any arbitrary or overbearing action toward the ministers of the gospel by those having official authority. Disagreeable though the duty may be, I am to reprove the oppressor, and plead for justice. I am to present the necessity of maintaining justice and equity in all our institutions. {SpM 482.2} If I see those in positions of trust neglecting aged ministers, I am to present the matter to those whose duty it is to care for them. Ministers who have faithfully done their work are not to be forgotten or neglected when they have become feeble in health. Our conferences are not to disregard the needs of those who have borne the burdens of the work. It was after John had grown old in the service of the Lord that he was exiled to Patmos. And on that lonely isle he received more communications from heaven than he had received during the rest of his lifetime. {SpM 482.3} After my marriage I was instructed that I must show a special interest in motherless and fatherless children, taking some under my own charge for a time, and then finding homes for them. Thus I would be giving others an example of what they could do. {SpM 482.4} Although called to travel often, and having much writing to do, I have taken children of three and five years of age, and have cared for them, educated them, and trained them for responsible positions. I have taken into my home from time to time boys from ten to sixteen years of age, giving them motherly care and a training for service. I have felt it my duty to bring before our people that work for which those in every church should feel a responsibility. {SpM 482.5} While in Australia I carried on this same line of work, taking into my home orphan children, who were in danger of being exposed to temptations that might cause the loss of their souls. {SpM 482.6} In Australia we also worked as Christian medical missionaries. At times I made my home in Cooranbong an asylum for the sick and afflicted. My secretary, who had received a training in the Battle Creek Sanitarium, stood by my side, and did the work of a missionary nurse. No charge was made for her services, and we won the confidence of the people by the interest that we manifested in the sick and suffering. After a time the Health Retreat at Cooranbong was built, and then we were relieved of this burden. {SpM 482.7} To claim to be a prophetess is something that I have never done. If others call me by that name, I have no controversy with them. But my work has covered so many lines that I can not call myself other than a messenger, sent to bear a message from the Lord to his people, and to take up work in any line that he points out. -483- {SpM 482.8} When I was last in Battle Creek, I said before a large congregation that I did not claim to be a prophetess. Twice I referred to this matter, intending each time to make the statement, "I do not claim to be a prophetess." If I spoke otherwise then this, let all now understand that what I had in mind to say was that I do not claim the title of prophet or prophetess. {SpM 483.1} I understand that some were anxious to know if Mrs. White still held the same views as she did years ago when they had heard her speak in the Sanitarium grove, in the Tabernacle, and at the campmeetings held in the suburbs of Battle Creek. I assured them that the message she bears today is the same that she has borne during the sixty years of her public ministry. She has the same service to do for the Master that was laid upon her in her girlhood. She receives lessons from the same Instructor. The directions given her are, "Make known to others what I have revealed to you. Write out the messages that I give you, that the people may have them." This is what she has endeavored to do. {SpM 483.2} I have written many books, and they have been given a wide circulation. Of myself I could not have brought out the truth in these books, but the Lord has given me the help of his Holy Spirit. These books, giving the instruction that the Lord has given me during the past sixty years, contain light from heaven, and will bear the test of investigation. {SpM 483.3} At the age of seventy-eight I am still toiling. We are all in the hands of the Lord. I trust in him; for I know that he will never leave nor forsake those who put their trust in him. I have committed myself to his keeping. {SpM 483.4} "And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry."

@@uriahcrosier 1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” The reason people may not like things she said like the golden card is that they haven't come face to face with the fact that heaven is a real, physical place. The city mentioned in Revelation 21 has streets, buildings etc. She could have been shown all kinds of stuff in it and doubters like the authors of the pamphlet would do the same with what ever she wrote on.

@@charnelallan7159 If you've seen Adventists discussing the truth about death, you will no doubt have heard of verses where the words 'spirit' and 'breath' are used interchangeably. The ability to breathe is not a natural thing. It is a supernatural thing, given to us at Creation. Therefore for angel to be ministering spirits, they are also ministering breaths. In other words, they breath oxygen like we do. Heaven is not a wispy fairyland. It is real. And God is real.

Josh Mo how would you explain Isa 8,20 that " to the LAW and to the testonomy, if they speak NOT according to this word ,it is because there is no light in them " No light" means they are in darkness and cannot see and if they have pleasure in unrighteousness(sin 1 John 3:4 ) God will.send them strong delusions that they will believe a lie . All.EGW did was to get people back to the Law of God not like those who try to get people to disobey Him. While the earth remains the law will.NOT pass away Matt 5:18.. this includes the 4th precept of Sabbath keeping

I quote, "Identical inspiration does not mean identical, canonical, authority." (Jud Lake). There are no degrees of "inspiration" in the Bible, so if Ellen White was inspired by the gift of prophecy, for consistency we should expect it to be in the same way the Bible authors were inspired. Nevertheless, that does not mean she is at the same level as the Bible in terms of canonicity and authority. In layman's terms, her writings are not Bible, and her writings are subordinate to the Bible, like the writings of other non-canonical prophets. For example, the "Book of Nathan" or the books of Gad, Iddo, etc., were never considered equal to the canon of that times, and yet the Israelites considered them inspired enough to read while viewing their authors as inspired prophets (see 1 Chron. 29:29, 2 Chron. 9:29). So, no, she is not equal to the Bible. But yes, she was inspired in the same way. That's how the scriptures describe non-canonical prophets and their writings. And we must go by scripture.

Jesus called John one greater than a prophet not because he replaced the old testament but because he was sent to proclaim that which written before hand to bring in the time of Jesus, the promise Messiah. Because we all are sinners and have broken the law Rom 3,10, 23 Psa 51,5, weall need Gods grace and mercy. He forgives us through the Cross of Christ. Jesus paid the penalty ( Gen 2:16,17) for oue rebellion Rom 3 : 24,25. BUT God can only forgive IF we confess and forsake our SINS 1John 1 9. Prov 28,13. Rom 12: 1,2. If there is no change in the life we haven't been to the Cross 1Cor 118. God does not condemn us the law does but through Jesus we can get the victory as Jesus did Rev 3, 21. And you are correct that there are, as it is, many whiners in the church as it pertains to their critique of Ellen White's writings. They have not allowed the Holy Spirit to mature them in their experience of rightly dividing truth from error. Out of any church, (my mother's family are Baptists but my father's family are Adventists; I'm a fourth generation Adventist from his lineage.) Seventh-day Adventism rightly understands what true sanctification of the life by the Spirit truly is and it's proper understanding of its succeeding relationship from justification by faith. Other churches are all over the place as to how the relationship between the two. I've simply understood conceptually of justification by faith meaning Abraham's heart and mind was recognized or reckoned to be set right with the Lord and the proceeding sanctification of Abraham's life was the clear maturation of growth and purification of his heart and mind that proceeded from his justification. Dennis Priebe, who has received much criticism, especially from evangelicals (who take a more literalist, legal approach to what justification by faith) has also helped me to understand the relationship between these two conceptually. @@Karen61165 Aptly put. I had a disagreement with a brother that Christ's death was a ‘legal necessity’ and that the idea that his death is the penalty paid for by the just demands of the law. This is a common teaching especially in conservative circles in Adventism that is based on erroneous conclusions that God's law functions no differently than the imposed laws human governments legislatively enact and judicially enforce. God's laws are principles of spiritual and physical health that being in harmony with such principles brings well-being and happiness. It is only in harmony with said principles that we are more able to rightly divide truth from that which is error. Penal substitution theology is actually based on the Catholic penitential system of sins being debts that need to be paid for by acts of good works; a way of balancing the scales so-to-speak. Martin Luther erroneously concluded that all sins past, present, and future were punished in Christ; thereby, a penalty was paid by Christ's death and the just demands of God's law were met. This is completely backward understanding that the early Christian church understood that sin is actually deviance from God's law, thus by Christ partaking of our humanity, actually overcame and perfected a righteous character that we by faith are partakers of and thus we become righteous. (Hebrews 5:8-9 correctly demonstrates this.) Jesus' death was not a payment made to legally pardon sins by judicially covering them by His blood and justification is not legally pardoning sinners by declaring them righteous even though they are not; this view is erroneously taught within evangelical circles that has sadly seeped into Adventism since 1888 and especially since the Adventist-evangelical conferences of the ‘50s.

However no matter how many times I might feed, clothe and visit the poor and needy on a Tuesday, I have no power by those actions to make Tuesday holy. God makes the day Holy or not by His presence. And in Genesis 2:3 we see which one and only day that was. "Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made."

I don't think you actually read the book. I have read it 3 times and over 60% of the book is literally taking about the historic period between the fall of Jerusalem, through the dark ages in Europe, and finally early American history. The rest deals with biblical subjects like the mark of the beast, the sanctuary services of the OT, the ten commandments, and the second coming of Jesus. These subjects are all in the Bible and the historic parts are very well documented and verifiable with other history documents. Therefore, your comment is completely false. Anyone who actually reads the book will understand that.

Isaiah 65:8, first half: Thus says the Lord: “As the new wine is found in the cluster, And one says, ‘Do not destroy it, For a blessing is in it’. And Acts 2:13 tells us: Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.” 'New wine' is grape juice. The Holy Spirit's outpouring caused scoffers to call them drunk on grape juice. Yes I found out a few years ago the Bahai's trace their heritage to the same movement Adventists came out of, that of the Millerites of the 1830's and early 1840's. They believe when the 2300 day prophecy did not get fulfilled in the literal return of Jesus that their prophet was its fulfillment. Of course, I don't agree, but I give them respect.

If you were living in the time that she was would you not have to same feelings and attitude that she did? I know that I would! After all WW1 was just over when she was born for one. She needed to stand up for the ten Cimmandments! She was kicked out of the Methodist church for wanting to obey the fourth commandment which is to keep the sabbath day holy! Actually that’s not accurate - Ellen white wasn’t kicked out of the Methodist church for wanting to observe the 7th day sabbath - it was because she was following the beliefs & teachings of William miller in 1843. She was given a tract about the sabbath in 1846 & even when this group of early Adventists ( known then as the little flock) began to believe that they should observe the sabbath - at first they did this from 6pm to 6pm not sunset to sunset which came later

For all the critics of Mrs White I will say…read one of her books. Test her against the Bible. Stop repeating what others say and see for yourself. pray for God’s guidance. If you’re leaving the church for whatever reason, afflict your soul before you leave. Make sure that’s the real reason. Be honest with yourself. And pray for God’s help. If you’ve already left, pray for God’s help to bring you back. You have time right now. We are in the last seconds of the last days. Eternity is at stake. 🙏🏼

How can you advise someone to be "honest yourself " when you believed in Ellen White who has been proven to be dishonest?. She copied from other Christian writers without acknowledging them, and claimed that she was "shown " by God. It was a straight out lying.

The reason we have left is because we have read both her books and the apologists' books. We have tested her against the Bible. We are not repeating what others are saying and we have seen for ourselves. God has guided us. We are being honest. Why would we pray for God's help to bring us back? Yes, eternity is at stake! That is why we left!

What other day would of been better to preach the Gospel to Jews ,just read down a couple of verses down in Acts 17,Yes they went into the Synogue but onlt to I quote "verse 3."Explaining and demonstrating that Christ needed to suffer and RISE (RESURRECTION) again from the dead , and this JESUS ,whom I PREACH unto you is christ.
