When she laughs at the end of those riffs, it reminds me of the pure joy that comes with really nailing a riff or line. The fact that she’s able to experience that feeling at such a young age will do wonders for her growth. Whether she sticks with bass or not, if she keeps having fun while learning, she will go so far!

It's not about how hard you try, it's about how long you try. Over the 40 years you played bass, how much of that time as a percentage did you spend practicing? If you haven't mastered it, you either have A) bad technique habits, that are fixable with strict patience. Or 2) You just simply never practiced enough for your brain and muscle memory to be primed with each other to play the instrument. If you keep practicing every single day, and I mean every single day, there will be improvement. Good luck my friend

I am in shock each time I watch this kid. Her spirit is amazing and I love that her dad is teaching her respect for others. She has to know the other bassist name, album, and year. She will have an incredible music lexicon and history that will facilitate amazing growth. I am amazed by her skill but shocked those little hands can do that. Physically, it baffles me because as a guitarist, I know the reaches are hard for me as an adult, and a bass has even bigger frets. I am sitting here with large hands complaining, and this 9 year old has seemingly no limitations. She is playing it all with those tiny hands. Incredible!

*@Lee Clements* Im no endocrinologist or biologist, not by a long shot. Just another someone who's read about how the difference in typing speed between men & women is _seratonin._ For men the average is 50-60 words per minute, whereas with women it is 70-90 wpm. I suspect that this "seratonin advantage" contributes significantly to Ellen's mind-blowing rapidity with those little fingers.... However, when I think for just a moment about the brute execution of veteran bassists Bernard Edwards, Nathan Watts & Louis Johnson (for example), it reminds me that there are people on both sides of the gender line who happen to be gifted with it. Incidentally, for this video Ellen matches the lightning speed of the masters, with Bernard's _Good Times_ bassline, & Nathan's _Sir Duke_ bassline In my 22 years of electric bass it has mystified me how that six string guitar has always required more of my stamina, & seems to also demand more energy for me to consistently hold those tiny strings against the frets, without mistakes. Its counter-intuitive that the thicker strings of a bass with their increased tension would take less energy from me, & enable me to play for longer sets before tiring. Rapidity has always been my neverending quest; a challenge only attained by continuous practice ever week, & quickly diminished by muscle atrophy if I put the instrument down for just a few days Best of Success to Ellen & her Dad. This world needs more fathers like him who are dedicated to their children's future, & willing to help them actualize their full potential, no matter what. God bless them both! 🎼🎶🎸❤❤

This young lady's playing is a perfect example of how important each one of the support instruments are to the character and style of a song! I am an 81 yr. old music lover from back in the days of Little Richard, Nat King Cole, Chuck Berry, and Gogi Grant, to name a very few from my early years, and I recognized some of the tune's names just from listening to her bass playing, used as an introduction to those songs!! If you stop and consider how many great songs start out with the introduction, the very 1st few notes of a song, being played by the bass player, you will understand what I mean. Not only is her talent awe inspiring for a youngster of her age, but she has only taken one step through that open door into a future of monumental fame and experiences! And the BEST part of her playing is not the finger movements or the style of picking she is using but it is her total enjoyment of what she is creating each time she begins to play on that bass guitar! Her music is her "playground" and she is all into that playground as she frolics through the different sets of "swings" and "slides" and "parallel bars" at her disposal in her "playground world"! I cannot make a statement about this young lady which does not require a simple "." after the sentence, that is how thoroughly impressed with her work I am, and I hope to see much more of her accomplishments as she moves forward into the "gymnastics" of fine tuning her talents and using her joy and passion from her works to help others in coping with a troubled world in which we live today.

Ellen is an angel. There is no other explanation for her. She somehow escaped the kingdom and made her way to this Little Rock, so she could make people smile. Succeeded. I’m a fan for life.

You're extremely talented, Ellen and adorable to boot. It warms my heart when I hear your dad coaching in the background as you name the songs, albums, bass player and year. You two sound like you're having so much fun and that he's an amazing man raising an amazing daughter.

You guys are so awesome. I’m proud to be a human today. As a dad of an eleven year old girl myself I was impressed how you got her to learn such a great bass line in the song “give it away” by the Chili Peppers but also carefully navigated around the album name. Ellen is precious!

My favorite all-time bass player! Each time Ellen plays with that sweet smile and with such a laugh, it brings me joy. Thank you, Ellen! And I also commend you Hovak for being such a gracious father providing full support to Ellen's musical gift and making Ellen a happy person.

That's what music is all about. Bringing joy both to yourself while playing it and to the others who are listening to you. Unfortunately a lot of us musicians forget that during our career and give too much focus to things that are in fact not so important. So, thank you for bringing joy to this world, and I really hope you'll keep it forever in your heart. ❤ I wish you all the best!

She's absolutely adorable and a fine musician for her age. Heck, she's a fine musician for any age. Her parents must be very proud of her. And she should be very proud of herself as well. Her little legs don't even reach the floor on that stool, so she's not even tapping her foot to keep time. This Little Giant has a great internal clock and groove. Bless you little one, thank you for doing the bass proud, and for sharing your playing with all of us other bassists. You have a very bright future young lady.

It's always amazing seeing young children play an instrument very well, but more so that they're having fun playing music. To have started young and already playing at a good level, there's so much potential and opportunities for her. I wish her the best, keep at it, ride the ups and downs, but never lose the love of music.

Beautifully done! It's a small detail, but for future reference, the "I Want You Back" bassline was written & played by Wilton Felder. It's an easy mistake to make because he was a saxophonist, and the line is definitely reminiscent of Jamerson.

I've been running a private teaching studio for the last 30* years. So I fully understand what kind of dedication it takes to prepare this level of performance. But the depth of teaching is so very satisfying to find realized in such a beautiful father daughter relationship. So much love for the art of music making . . . Thanks for sharing your journey, a tremendous gift.
