I like the way the cover stitch looks better. I think I will try making the bands narrower to begin with to avoid trimming. It looks like a great pattern.

I like doing a faux binding look, just fold the band in half and sew it on and the. Topstitch the seam allowance down. Looks like a binding but without the hassle

I’ve also sewn that method and it works great too!

Pretty. I think my first choice will be the fitted version. I need some tops to wear under jumpers / cardis etc. Probably with the doubled over option. I'm too clumsy to do the other one and cut the excess off 🙈

I think that sounds perfect! I hope you love them! 🎉🩷

This is the method I've been looking for! I hadn't spotted this video until now. A question - if I wanted to do the neckband style binding on a different E&M pattern that has bands in the pattern would I use the original band piece & follow your method 1, or would the length be different if it as going to be binding rather than a band? Thanks for any help.
@EllieandMacPatternsLLC2 ай бұрын
Great question. Binding is usually 90-97% of the neckline circumference or armscye circumference. The bands would be 85-87%. I would calculate the circumference and cut them at 95-97% (you can always shorten if needed) and use the height of the binding from the tank.

Love it 😍 Kind of off-topic question, but you got me into Coverstitch machines and I bought a used Janome- I hate it! Lots of tunneling, the person who sold it to me said she couldn’t figure it out. Is the one you have very simple to use? I wonder if mine is faulty
@EllieandMacPatternsLLC4 ай бұрын
Usually tunneling means the looper tension is too high on a coverstitch machine. Have you tried loosening the looper tension? Diana uses a Brother 2340cv I believe.

I tried to use method #1 for binding my sleeves and neckband. I had a very hard time getting the band to stay folded corrected over the serged seem once I got it to my machine. As soon as I unclipped so I could feed it through the machine, it would unroll a bit, causing it to be uneven and often not catching that serged seem. I ended up just folding the whole band over and topstitching that way, so it ended up being a thinner band than intended. Do you have any tips for keeping the band folded correctly while topstitching? I used a double needle.

Did you press it with steam and clip or pin a bunch? ❤

Hi Diana! New Sewing room, new Oliso Iron, and new pattern! I prefer the fold method like a bias binding for the arm, and I think I prefer the sew and cut the excess for the neck band, cause it is less bulky. Your Sweater is very nice, is it a E&M pattern?

ohhh and another question: How do you deal with sewing over the bulky seems without the machine getting stuck when you get to those spots? The difference in height makes mine get stuck when the fabric with the big seam to go over gets to the foot. I've tried stopping with the needle down right before it and lifting the foot to move the seam underneath, but it still didn't feed through very evenly. Any ideas for that problem? I should mention I used a walking foot and knit fabric.
@EllieandMacPatternsLLC4 ай бұрын
If your machine has a hard time with the seams, you can try a few things. One is to pound the seams ahead of time with a wooden mallet. I have a coverstitch machine that struggles a bit, and I just anticipate the bumps and pull the fabric through at each bump, works like a charm. I hope that helps.
