I just can’t believe Criterion is going to release No Country for Old Men in 4K! I’m so grateful that they do this, because that movie is bonafide top 10 of all time material for me. If Criterion also releases a 4K of There Will Be Blood and Children of Men in the future I can die peacefully.

You’re probably the only one that talked in length about Eastern Condors when others just rushed through this one as a curio Criterion release they secretly had no interest in. I think it’s more interesting to hear about something we don’t know much about, instead of just gushing about things we already know a lot about. Kudos for that! ❤

Great video! Really looking forward to all four of these, though I may hold off on 8 1/2 because I’m saving up for the Felini collection. I really wish they’d do a collection like that for Ozu. No Country For Old Men was shot on film. If you’re ever not sure IMDB has a tech specs page for every movie, the tech spec link is down near the bottom of the page for every movie. It has everything you need to know down to the film stock, camera, lenses, and soundtracks. But yeah… 4K master…. Very vague maybe it’ll have better info in the booklet when it comes out 🤔

Shivendra Singh Dungarpur recently discussed the restoration efforts undertaken by his company & criterion, the Film Heritage Foundation. Notably, their current projects include Sholay. This is exciting news, given the foundation's remarkable track record in restoring acclaimed Indian films such as Thampi, Kalpana, and more recently, Manthan. The foundation also facilitated 4K restorations of Dev Anand's classics, including CID, Guide, Jewel Thief, and Johny Mera Naam, which were re-released nationwide in India to celebrate Dev Anand's centenary. The Film Heritage Foundation also collaborated with Mani Ratnam to preserve several of his films.

I actually went to see No Country for Old Men at the cinema and I bought the blu-ray a couple of years ago. I’m not going to buy the criterion because they are expensive - just over £20. I once accidentally bought the Blu-Ray & 4K of Lone Star in my local HMV when I just wanted the Blu-Ray copy, but that is definitely a film I’m going to keep. Paris, Texas is a film I also bought in the same HMV which I’ve never seen.

I already own the "original" first 2k restoration of 8 1/2 and the Essential Fellini set w the 1080p release of the 4k restoration; I don't see myself buying the new 8 1/2 4K... Paris Texas, on the other hand was seminal for me; watched it in the cinema when it came out and bought the Süddeutsche Zeitung Cinemathek DVD release from 2005, which I still own; Owned the Ry Cooder soundtrack album on vinyl for years.. Never had it on Blu-ray... yeah, that'll go on the wish-list for sure! Own No Country For Old Men on Blu, and as good as that film is, I'll have to see if I'll upgrade... there are so many films to get and the 1080p disc isn't bad... Eastern Condors couldn't interest me less if it tried. That's NOT a judgement, just personal preference! But happy for those who want it!

I will be buying No Country because its a fav but its hard not to be disappointed in the lack of effort Criterion puts forth these days. It used to be they were tops for AV and quantity and quality of extras. Lately Ive been way more impressed by labels like Arrow, Eureka, and Indicator for those same reasons. When you consider the cost of Criterion discs its an even bigger punch in the nards. For the same price I can often get a brick of Arrow release with loads of features, commentaries and an awesome book. Criterion is coasting on their brand. They need to smarten up or theyre going to start losing market share.

agreed, 30+ for a standard case and a flimsy booklet is pretty pathetic compared to what the others produce these days

Reflecting back to 1984, it’s fascinating to think that as a 10-year-old, I was captivated by Paris, Texas. This film truly transformed me; I used to experience it through Hunter's perspective, but now I find myself identifying with Travis. And that Ry Cooder score is absolutely unforgettable. People often toss around the term "masterpiece," but Paris, Texas genuinely deserves that title. I've heard whispers that the colour grading might lean towards a sickly yellow, which could be a turn-off for me. I want to see the red baseball cap not purple and pink sweater in a certain way after watching it for nearly four decades. I haven't placed a pre-order yet and might just rent it before committing to a purchase

Love the "Team Deakins Podcast" as well. Good reminder of the Robert Eggers episode as I also remembered their brief discussion about the HDR and in general the colours of The Witch. Roger Deakins actually mentioned basically that there was huge problems with Blade Runner 2049 with HDR similar to The Witch because 2049 had also a lot of "grey" textures. Found a little KZbin clip where they talked about it (around 7minute mark) kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5qqlXmwgNelrtk

I understand the frustration with 4K double dips taking up release slots being annoying but it's important to remember that Criterion isn't the only company that does this (Arrow I'm looking at you). If you've already gotten the film (and within the last few years) it can be pretty annoying but if you haven't then it's welcome news. You win some you lose some.

Hello mr elliot, i have great questions for you, do you have favorite neo noir films? What are the classic films you want to see in Blu-Ray in mainland great Britain?
@floydianpink25242 ай бұрын
Mr Deakins is very anti revisionist HDR grading. Even Blade runner 2049 was only 400 nits max but that looked great! Anyway the lack of an OCN scan is concerning. Oh brother where art though was shot on film by deakins then was one of the first films to use a digital intermediate, perhaps no country is heavily stylized using that process which would make a OCN scan troublesome? Just a thought. Keep up the good work Elliot and keep costing me a fortune!!

I had the same reaction to Paris Texas when I first saw it. Life-changing for me as well because of how it validated and influenced my photography. I was lucky enough to see this restoration on the big screen during a limited release here in Los Angeles. You should also look up the German fascination with the American West. Plays a major factor here and in other films like Bagdad Cafe.
