Currently arranging a Radiohead piece for my school’s big band. This helped tons. Thanks from CO, USA

Cool project. Which song are you doing? A couple of my Los Angeles buddies have made some killer Radiohead jazz covers… check out Max Haymer’s version of Optimistic, and check out Danny Janklow’s version of Creep.

@@PandemoniumBigBand Paranoid Android, I know Ken Schaphorst and James Miley did arrangements of Radiohead but I’ll have to check out the ones you mentioned. They really make some killer charts.

Currently working on a big band project translating ska songs into big band for a big one-off concert. This series has been very helpful. I took jazz arranging in college with Bill Fritz, but have forgotten too much.

That sounds like a super fun and rewarding project. Have you reached out to the Western Standard Time big band? I know they’ve put together a huge library of charts like that. You might be able to save some effort by purchasing some existing charts.

@@PandemoniumBigBand those guys are awesome. If I hit a wall and a windfall I may poke them for charts. My current budget is limited to $0 and whatever personal time I can eke out, so dipping back into jazz arranging I go.

I found this series from arranging a pop song into a swing big band chart. Still in the middle of the process but it's so much fun. Although I am the writer and composer for the original song so there's definitely a lot more creative freedom 😂

Eliot I really enjoy the positive way you show and tell us this concepts. Very nice and funny to see you always smiling during the explanations. My lesson learned here is keep it simple and it will jazz by itself :)

Excellent video, as usual. I really admire you for taking on a discussion of things that are rather subjective. Bravo. Two things you sort of toss out in this video that I think would make excellent discussions where: 1.) Any bass note works with the melody if you know how to connect it. True. Actually any bass note can become the root of a note cluster. It would be interesting to hear you comments on constructing bass lines and where that comes in the arranging/composing process. 2.) Jazz is well grounded. True again. And exactly how much do we need to attend to that thought. We've all heard performances, solos, arrangements that went 'too far' and left the audiences behind. What do you do to make sure your charts are well attended by the listeners?

Those would both make excellent deep-dives. I have way more thoughts about the second idea.
