halfway through the video and I gotta stop to go and listen to this album myself. knew clairo from her original blow up back in 2017, but aside from a few songs i haven’t been the craziest about her sound, but after seeing all the praise this album has gotten, this video pushed me over the edge to listen to it.
@BonJoviBeatlesLedZep8 күн бұрын
You don't really make videos about contemporary music so it's such a delight to me that this one is about Clairo. I've loved her for years. Haven't heard the new album yet but I've heard nothing but great things. 😊
@T1M5TER7 күн бұрын
I haven't had anything been sold to me well as you have just sold Clairo's new album ever since that video of the guy sitting on a street corner selling patato peelers. My days. The sounds in this video evoke feelings I haven't felt in a _while_, because I haven't been listening to any good new music for a while, or dealing with charm all that much... wow. Kudos to you and Clairo.
@CarlosERamos-ey1ljКүн бұрын
you should listen to clairo’s live at electric lady. it’s more rock oriented but the performances are fantastic and the sound mix is second to none

As a guitar teacher, I discovered this album after a few students brought it up in class and, while I do think a lot of the songs are quite similar, I was also pleased to find that kids now want to learn more than the same 4 Taylor Swift chords + capo. No hate on Taylor but it's vital in today's mainstream landscape to have harmonic and melodic variety. It just adds more colour to the world.

"One of the key themes of this song of this album is intimacy and this charming effect only works as well as it does because Clairo sounds like she's singing only inches from you, and you are leaning in because it's something she only wants you to hear." Holy smokes you are right. I didn't think of it like that. That's why I liked it so much. Great review on her album.

This is just enchanting. Your description of the party at the end definitely convinced me to go check this out as that is definitely more my vibe. Like, the louder/flashier stuff is fun at times, but even when I was a teen (long, long ago)...that was what I really wanted from a party, hehe. Artists like Simon & Garfunkel, AURORA and The Sundays definitely scratch that itch for me in various ways and I'm always happy to find another. I did really enjoy the Lemon Twigs after checking them out too!

The album's instrumentation is fantastic but that "2020s bored lofi girl vibe" kind of singing is really becoming tedious at this point... and the comparison with Back to Black (and Amy's incredible voice) doesn't help

Great video, fabulous musician! Maybe I'm off base, but If I may rant: this video having lower views than Elliot's typical ones is why I can't stand 'there's no good music anymore' arguments. Here is Elliot -- someone who the viewers ostensibly trust -- handing fans of 60s / 70s music a curated recommendation. And folks are skipping the video because it's not Beatles or another artist they recognize. I get it, but it's a little frustrating! 😅 Great music is getting made if you'll just seek it out (or in this case trust recommendations from people you like)

love the recommendations! Showed the lemon twigs to my dad (an old pom who grew up on the beatles, and he liked them!) I will definitely be checking out clairo, but in the mean time, its completely different sonic soundscape but i think you might get a kick out of will wood, the whole journey of the artist and his battle with persona, brand, and external perceptions of self through music and now his sudden (albeit niche) cultural relevance

@ana46657 күн бұрын
So glad to see you talking about this album because it's pretty fantastic! I enjoyed the direction Clairo took on Sling, but didn't return to it as much. This one won me over on first listen! Love that she is leaning into this warm sophisti-pop sound. Might be my AOTY but I also have Imaginal Disk by Magdalena Bay and Fabiana Palladino's debut album up there too!! I actually recommend the last one which has flown under the radar this year. Fabiana's album is also sophisti-pop but more so with an 80s synthpop sound and her voice is amazing. An album that has a similar soft rock, neo psych sound to Charm is probably Luna Li's When A Thought Grows Wings, with Golden Hour and Fantasy as my fave songs in it. I also suggest Here in the Pitch by Jessica Pratt, kind of a short folk album but still moody and soft with a vintage sound. There's also Adrienne Lenker's Bright Future, which I have to revisit. That said, there are some albums i'm looking forward to from other singer/songwriters: Laura Marling's Patterns and Haley Heynderickx' Seed of A Seed. This year is packed lol.

I bought this LP at the same time as I did ‘A Dream is All We Know’ from Rocksteady in Melbourne, and they truly pare gorgeously together in the same universe - ‘…Dream…’ for the day, and ‘Charm’ for the night. Certainly the tape is a big part of it, but I love both regardless. Gorgeous.

You seriously raise the bar with your album reviews man. This is the level of attention and love a good album deserves. I'm fully sold on this project after your descriptions and analysis. Amazing work as always Elliot!!
