I hope you have a great day. Thank you so much for being kind, for being human in a society where no one says hello. So hello friend , from isai in California!

I keep asking myself why I love elliott smith so much, but to be honest, it's pretty simple: he played what he felt. You don't get that very often these days. Rest in peace, dude.

I wonder why I love and resonate with his music so much, and what separates the million angsty musicians playing what they feel from someone like Elliott. In the huge waves of imitation and pestilence that follow close behind any good idea in music, a million grunge songs and a million emo songs were written, a billion punk songs. And a lot of these songs were people writing exactly how they feel. Elliott played what he felt, but he was exceptionally good at drawing outstandingly accurate outlines around otherwise totally ineffable emotions and feelings. You could tell he was already an incredible songwriter at 17, where a lot of songwriters go through many much rougher phases before hitting their stride and finding their zone with their songwriting. He has the same vibe as the kind of person you meet when you find yourself in a fucked up place in life after a couple dumb decisions, the type of people you meet are often surviving and more animalistic because of it.. But every once in a while, you meet someone who is also in an objectively painful or negative place in their life, but they still try to keep your spirits up as their spirits are silently drowning. People who are so good spirited it lifts your spirits, people so kind, wise and funny, yet they aren't fools as its clear they are aware of their situation and calculating their lives around it to survive. Yet, just talking to them leaves you instantly uplifted, a few conversations make you feel wiser for having simply talked to them, and also make you feel comradery with them in shared suffering with a friend who is making a far better thing out of a bad situation than you. I think you're right, and if there was one thing I'd add to what you said it would be; He was an exceptional person, who played what he felt. PS- I zoned out while thinking about what you said, and I had a daydream about cops arresting addicts and pulling people over for speeding, and then before sending us off, they would try to sell us their cop merch, just like how KZbinrs shill merch, t shirts with an outline of them radar gunning passing cars, and each cop had their own specific merch, like specific KZbinrs.. I dunno.. I think if I might've gone too far on this shaky tree limb of nonsense. It sounded better in my head as a half awake day dream.

I've been listening to Elliott Smith since I was a baby, since he is one of my parents' favorites. Just started listening to Frank Ocean a few months ago, and he samples this song in his song Seigfried. I was quite happy to see that one of my favorite music artists is a fan of one of my other favorite music artists c:

The multitrack vocal harmonies on the words "fond farewell to a friend" are so great. on one of them, it sounds like they actually lower the main track to allow the harmony to take the limelight, just for one repetition. its a nice little technique

I think this was the first song from Elliott that I can remember. It was on a Q magazine compilation, I think I still have it somewhere. I wish I had got more into him before he passed. I was a stupid teenager who had started getting into heavier music then. I even went to a festival where he played on the smaller stage but I was completely unaware. So many regrets. RIP Elliott.

This was my life, inner and outer, to a T, for 5 years. I’m now 2 years sober. If you’re reading this, I believe in you. If I did it, you can to. I thought I would die an addict, and soon; I was sure of it. Then one day, I had enough. I admit, it feels almost inexplainable, like some grace fell upon me and made me act. But no, it was just in me the whole time. It’s in you too, I promise.
