Ostrich and Chirping was not meant to be on the album. It was meant to be a double album also. Elliott had a certain sound he wanted that was slightly butchered by his old producer unfortunately, who completely took over after his death and refused to work with the producer who had actually been working on the album with Elliott. Ostrich and Chirping was just a sample that producer (the one who was previously working on the album) created and he has no idea why it was added. If you're interested, i highly recommend listening to some of Elliotts rarities. Some of them were from this time period that didn't make it because they were unfinished or deemed too dark by his family, Others from Figure 8 that never made it on an album. They're great tracks under the title "Grand Mal." My personal favorite is Stick Man. I'd recommend them in your own time if you like. It's probably lost now but i can try to find it, somebody made a fan edit of the album with the songs that were probably going to be in the project(plus some extra) and it's a really cool experience of what this could have been. I can email it to you or something if you like. It's rough because it's obviously not all finished but it's very cool.

Those three tracks in the middle are some of his Greatest songs, Fond Farewell, King’s Crossing and twilight. Absolutely stunning. New Moon is also amazing, it’s mostly tracks that didn’t make Either/Or, it’s worth a reaction.

Really enjoyed you reacting to Elliott Smith. There is also a posthumous compilation album New Moon and other unreleased songs out there if you ever care to go even deeper. :)

The part in King's Crossing where he says: "The method acting that pays my bills, keeps a fat man feeding in Beverly Hills" "Got a heavy metal mouth that hurls obscenities and I get my checks from the trash Treasury" "Because I took my own insides out!..." "It doesn't matter cause I have no sex life and all I wanna do now is inject my ex-wife" "I've seen the movie and I know what happens...It's Christmas time and the needles on the trees and skinny Santa is bringing something to me- his voice is overwhelming, speech is slurred and I only understand every other word.." To me, he's voicing his frustrations with the fact he's poured his soul into making these songs and in his misery, you have all these people; whether it be record labels, people coming out of the woodwork- hoping to make a ton of money and take advantage of what is essentially Elliott's mental well-being. Hence the line where he says he gets his checks because he took his own insides out. Then goes on to say it doesn't even matter anyway because he's been reduced to nothing but a heroin junkie. The Santa line is referring to maybe his drug dealer, or could even be an experience he had as a kid with his stepdad not being Santa at all, but just some drunk guy who fell into the tree, smashed all the presents and ruined Christmas for him. lol

Twilight is another deep one that is essentially a love letter to the day time, while he is stuck with this cycle of night and darkness and doesn't want to be. Elliott wants to be in the sunshine, with all the people, activities, happiness, normalcy. But he's personified the night time as his lover who he wishes he could cheat on. I probably am not explaining it very well, but I've been there when I was younger and abusing substances- I had my sleep schedule completely screwed up and it was like I never was awake or got to see the day time- my world was night time all the time and after a while, it starts to do really negative things to your psyche. All you want is to be normal. That moment when it just barely starts to lighten up before the sun comes out and you're in between this "twilight", you have go and won't be able to wait on the sun- go off to sleep and wake up just in time for the darkness again, thus repeating the loop. The detail of the frogs & crickets chirping at the end is a nice touch.

This is my personal favorite Elliott album, I've heard that while he was recording these songs he wanted this album to be his "White Album" (The Beatles) with how experimental and large it was, and also like the white album it was gonna be a double album. RIP Elliott

Bro, I came across your channel today: thank you! As a musician myself, I've been into Elliott Smith since 1996, and to see your reactions to his last album is so awesome...I was sitting here like "wait until here hears such-in-such" song...trust me when I say that I GET IT! Love the video man, and great subject such as Elliott Smith to feature: I probably have ALL of his releases. Thanks again!

Elliott Smith actually had quite a lot of songs in Drop C often with the high "E" tuned town to a C as well. Songs like Clementine, No Name #5 for an example uses lower tunings for example. A lot of his songs are in Standard D as well.

As others have pointed out, it's impossible to know what the finished album would have been like, as the musicians and family kind of imagined what he would have liked done on a few of them. So a lot of the guitar work on the album isn't him - and some of the lyrics may not have even been completed, they came up with their own tracklisting, etc.. So it should never be seen as the finished record that would have been. Some were closer to finished than others. But I'm glad they did it, as some of his best songs are on that posthumous album. "A Distorted Reality..." has always been one of my favorites.

Yeah so if you listen carefully to the lyric “Tell me one good reason why I shouldn’t do it” on Kings Crossing you can hear a voice say “because I love you”. Ex wife added that posthumously obviously.

You've gotta be careful listening to Elliott like this. If your headspace is not great or you're broken- sitting alone with headphones listening to this album will drag you down to a dangerous place. Elliott's level.

3 more final songs I would say are a necessity- that somehow never made any of the studio albums- you should react to New Disaster, Going Nowhere and Go By.

I do not like this record very much I can’t get over how weird the production is. There’s just something off about it. There still are some good songs though like twilight and I like an early version of coast to coast. Edit: I’ve listened to it some more and there are still some skips but all the songs after and including twilight are much better than the first half Still my least favorite Elliott smith album but it’s still good.
