I just keep watching videos of his Toronto shows. I could have been there. I was 23 when he died. I should have known better than to put it off. Story of my life.

Agreed. I've been obsessed with Bumbershoot for the last few months and this show is now my new geek. I can't stop the outbursts with the intro of each and every song, one after another. The fix is in... sigh.

@@SuperLunaland You are incredibly lucky. I am still trying to understand how this amazing artist never registered on my radar. I don't recall ever even hearing any of his music on the radio in my area. He seemed to be peaking at a time when internet wasn't quite at the takeoff level - essentially he peaked before things would be altered forever after 9/11. I know he had a couple songs in movies though I didn't know these songs were him til just recently. Terrible luck. Saw Good Will Hunting only once and do not really remember Miss Misery and it's not one of my favorites - no doubt as to why this was selected for mainstream Hollywood garbage. I watched his performance on ABC for grammys doing Miss Misery and it was awkward and just not "right". Needle in the Hay from Royal Tennenbaum's is another one I didn't care for because it is too tied to that awful freakish movie. I hope it's not true what I heard about how he killed himself. I try not to buy into comments I come across on YT videos but I read it several times. Suicide is horrible regardless but that is the first I have ever heard of it being done in that way. Wouldn't it have been easier for him to have opted for the H overdose? Where is Lee's Place??

His acoustic songs are where his talent really shines. The soft spoken vocals, the delicate but intricate finger picking, the melancholy melodies and the desolate lyrics all compliment each other so well. His electric songs are sometimes hit or miss (I like Son of Sam/Don't Go Down, am bored by Coming Up Roses/Division Day), and so when his shows are electric I tend to skip through the songs more. I love the Ford Theater show the most, even though he's visibly fucked up at time. I can't knock it
@TapeCollageForEloise
@TapeCollageForEloise 6 жыл бұрын
Coming Up Roses is mostly acoustic though.... There's an air organ, some subtle drums and a tiny lick of electric lead guitar but the foundation is still his acoustic guitar playing. And I certainly don't find it boring, in fact it's one of my favourites. The lyrics are some of his most vivid and evocative.

What went so wrong with this eclectically talented man? Life happens to all of us. I don't know much about him but can only make guesstimations based on how he presents himself at performances and in interviews I've watched. I recognized a lot of characteristics I share with myself - characteristics I imagine many other drug addicts share as well. One thing I saw clearly is that this was a person who did not want fame in any way, shape or form. He didn't appear to have anyone watching his back and was not close with his family and his "friends" were more like accessories or acquaintances. One picks up on this.

addicts have a drug solution and a pain problem. He had a psychic pain problem that nothing would solve. Sucks. The world is not as good without him in it. I'm grateful I got to see him play one time. the harmonies and energy of this show is crazy.

@@lexremillard2549 Wow, you are lucky to have such a treasure in your memory bank. How weird for me to say, having never met or seen the man play, but I absolutely agree with you about the world not being as good without him in it - there is an undeniable truth in this.
