I became an Elliott fan back in the late 90's and a few years ago I stumbled on the Green Street video and got hooked on watching his live performances. I actually feel a little bit obsessed/infatuated. I can't stop watching Green Street, Jon Brion, SteamBoat, and all the others. In a way I feel like all hardcore Elliott fans have something in common that allows us to all relate both to him and his music. I particularly appreciate his mistakes during the live performances. We live in an age of American Idol and America's Got Talent, and I feel like too much pressure is placed on a performance to be flawless. People are flawed, and an Elliott performance wouldn't be complete without a few "pitchy" notes here and there, a cough from the audience, or Elliott wandering off or saying something funny/odd. I'd give anything to have seen him live, but since that's no longer an option I'll just continue to watch these videos obsessively and collect concert posters.

@@mijadreams3486 I like where your head is at. Real talk tho, suffering from depression and substance abuse/ addiction myself, I always got the impression that Elliott needed less adoration and worship from his fans, and needed more ears to listen to him, mouths to engage in simple conversation, shoulders to lean into... basically being treated like a person who also makes beautiful art, not a Saint who happens to have basic human frailty. Its what we all need a little more of; plain and simple humanity, kindness to better connect us to one another. NOT sycophantic worship; because even the best intentions toward someone; putting them up on a pedestal, is still creating distance between them and the rest of us, and its in that distance that depression thrives. Makes it easy to believe we are alone. Even in a sea of adoring fans. Maybe especially in one. I'm really not trying to come down on you specifically; your reply was kind and you meant well. Thank you for being the light looming above me. While I may be in the abyss, and many others here... you have shown us that it exists... even if we can't feel or fathom it. Probably ignorant to speak this way considering the outcome, considering life did't let you bask in that light, but... you wouldn't have been able to write or inject your emotions into your music like this if you hadn't touched that light. I struggle to understand how this person never registered on my musical radar back in the late 90s/early 2000s, a time when music was probably everything to me and my friends in a way that it no longer is - well, new music (or lack thereof). This would have been exactly what we were looking for then, and he was our age. I was always looking for new music and I honestly can't say I recall hearing anything of his on any radio station. His name does not even ring a bell. The only thing I can say with certainty is that I do remember the Needle in the Hay song from Royal Tennenbaum's and I didn't care for that song. I was watching a video on one of my favorite alternate news stations and this guy likes to throw good music into his backgrounds. This is where I came across Elliott. I was really taken by this song and music hadn't had an effect like that on me since probably around the time I first started listening to Pearl Jam and Radiohead. Before I even looked this guy up something told me in the pit of my stomach he wasn't around anymore. Wondering if anyone else out there also lives in some fucked up parallel universe where this guy didn't exist. I live in the Philadelphia area.
