Its so funny because when you think of great guitarists, people almost never mention Elliott Smith. But his playing was nuts. Not just in its composition, but agility and rhythm. So good.

The son of a bitch was at the level of Nick Drake, Jimmy Page, Robbie Robertson and people like that when it comes to guitarplaying. Dude was insanely talented, almost almost a man of genius
@ianbrowning21903 жыл бұрын
i think elliott made it a point not to be flashy or self-indulgent in his playing. the dude could shred for sure but any guitar solo space in his songs is almost always occupied by a repetition of the vocal melody on guitar rather than a big guitar solo. he was a bottle rocket of a man. so much contained potential.
@JonShade-fy2gm3 жыл бұрын
@@alfredoca687 Agreed 110 percent. His talent was mind-numbingly epic. His playing on Roman Candle is such a knockout. All of his songs are, but Roman Candle really stands out as a perfect example of his exceptional brilliance as a guitarist.

Completely agree. Been playing 20 something years and sometimes people after shows say i sound like bert jansch / english folk pickin etc..but long before i heard nick drake and such i had heard elliott smith and he was my introduction to pickin and weird tunings. I went on to study john fahey after oddly enough.

Wish he played this more often live. The interlude is just.... Well, you know how it is. It's bliss. You can hear a dude go "OHHH" at 1:46 out of PURE awe - At least... That's how I'ma interpret it lol. Watching him play it live is crazy. He layered the hell out of the studio version.

i've listened to the studio version so many times. the stripped down version just tripped me out. so good.

Even Elliott struggled to play it. This is one of, like, 2 times he played it live.

It's 5am and I can't sleep and I finally got it. The right hand technique is ridiculous, but it's totally doable. Fingerpick the two highest strings with your index and middle fingers, then do the melody notes with your thumb. It's a lot of jumping around with your thumb, but it's waaaay easier than I imagined it would be from the previous times I've tried it.

Really? I don't listen to Elliott Smith when I'm depressed. It's too dark and gives too much power to the darkness a lot of the time. Absolutely beautiful songwriting though.

Like any artist, he has good shows, bad shows, and occasional great shows. During his hard drug use period (2001-2003) obviously his performance suffered more. But there are plenty of fantastic shows albeit with not the best recording quality; which is separate from performance quality. His Sweden show comes to mind--NY Town Hall HQ, there are others as well, plenty more examples if you're satisfied with audio-only, no video.
