I 100% understand Elliott's frustration. If we set hip hop to the side, and just look at podcasts in general, the podcast market is flooded with low effort celebrity-hosted podcasts that 1) are extremely boring and 2) get far more listeners than other shows of much higher quality. It is undeniable that big names are able to phone in their content, because the value they bring is just their name being attached. I love comedy, and this problem is even more pronounced in that field. Literally every C-tier comedic actor has a podcast now, and they all suck, and they all get bigger numbers than absolute legendary comedy podcasts that pioneered the format and put in far more effort every week.

Like he said…because people have an opinion..they should be able to just start a podcast, and get paid? It RUINS objectivity..and causes literal chaos. There are responsibilities and tenets with ANY undertaking…but you kids like the lack of requirements and standards because you are lazy..and could care less if something is destroyed as long as you get yours BEFORE it is destroyed.

I see your point, but gotta push back a tiny bit on the idea of evolution of an art, like journalism or music. When we're using that word "evolution" in common parlance we're really just saying "adapt". Thats all and thats the truth. The problem with simply adapting is its fundamentally about mediocrity. Its the essence of adaptation; you *only* change if the environment requires it. Thats adaptation. This is awful if you want to show that you have more value than that. And the problem with ALL professionals (including journalism) is the majority of journalists have been adapting. They weren't delivering more value than bloggers in the 00s, influencers in the 10s and now platforms. Everyones simply adapting because its hard to eat out here. I get that, not knocking it. But lets be clear why these things are shaking up the game so bad -- entire industries got mediocre, instead of innovating and showing why a blogger or influencer cant do what they do. Lets not slip into the mindset that "evolving" is a good thing. Only in as much as it keeps you alive. But surviving is not thriving. Elliot needs to put his head down and show us how good he is. Right now hes mostly just complaining because coasting doesnt cut it. Theres little difference between what hes doing and cam/mase. *That* is the problem. One last thing: overall, we're seeing middle men disappear from professional spheres and thats GREAT. Direct to customer is the way to go in my opinion. People want a service or product thats accountable, and ALL of our demands are met when we can deliver quality. Hip Hop might be in a return to form, in that people want quality.

I wish Elliot knew how much work it takes to even be considered “modern media”. I know the past had its issues but it takes an extra hour plus just to find the right thumbnail. I understand where he’s coming from but I don’t believe this is the best way to shed light on his concern. I think he’s putting space between him and the culture and podcasters. Even when he grates on my nerves with the “I’m important so love me” takes, I can’t ignore the fact that he is a true journalist and editor who has started, maintained, grown and expanded how hip hop culture is seen and heard globally. We really hit a whole new phase of media since 2020 and I think (just my opinion) that we are still in the filtering out stage, it's gunna take a while but slowly the Bobbie whateverhernamewas of the worlds are dying out and I'm all for it. I get what Elliot is saying and I agree - He is just really bad at conveying his message.

My heart goes out to journalists and other professions esteemed and characterized by education and artistry.

I appreciate your thoughts but I have to provide some pushback that “Elliot is better, he just is” . Elliot’s assertion that he’s “more informed” and “better at telling a story” is unfounded. His claims lack context as it pertains to Cam & Mase and what they cover. When did Elliot begin covering the NBA and NFL? Cam’ron and Ma$e, who are also prominent figures in hip-hop, cover these sports and bring on former players and coaches for expert opinions. How does Elliot’s knowledge differ from theirs in this arena? If Elliot wants to talk about his coverage in the hip-hop industry, he needs to understand when others have a deeper understanding and expertise. Cam’ron and Ma$e, who were both part of the biggest labels in the game, have firsthand experience in the industry. They ran labels, entered into contracts, and had direct access to budgets and the inner workings of the music business. Elliot’s interviews with people who have actually done these things are not as informative as their own observations. Furthermore, Elliot’s storytelling style is different from Cam’ron and Ma$e’s. “Different does not mean deficient.” Elliot’s rise to fame was due to obscurity, but he failed to capitalize on it. “Security by obscurity is not security at all.” As soon as people had alternative options, they chose someone else. It’s like baseball before the integration of African Americans. While players then were talented, when they faced competition from players of color they didn’t look as talented . Same thing in the media space. Now that the playing field is more inclusive, they must either improve or face defeat.

It’s interesting to me that the rise and ubiquity of podcasts, “informative” social media, etc from artists/producers/creators of work has happened at the same time as physical media has been dying off. I was recently talking to a friend about how film commentaries and behind-the-scenes features have largely disappeared from Blu Rays (probably because streaming releases have no use for them), where they were once one of the best reasons to invest in a DVD release instead of using ulterior means to get a copy of a movie. A lot of that stuff seems to be moving online and becoming its own product.

Unfortunately for Elliott he's going to have to adapt and or adopt. That's part of getting old in just about every profession I can think of, especially ones that are in any kind of spotlight. As sort of stated in this video, I think he's done a good job at both. He seems to have embraced the evolution of the Hip Hop media space by adopting the podcast-like format by co-hosting The Bigger Picture while also going solo dolo on the Elliot Wilson Experience. I also think he has earned the right to b!@$% about how things are because he has put in the work over the years. Within reason, any responses he gets from it are most likely going to be warranted. The important thing for him is to follow up the complaints with actions that prove what he's saying in this video if he wants to stay relevant and be privy to things he expects to be.

@ When you call yourself a journalist it is incumbent on you to remain UNBIASED, the moment that you favor an artist just because you like them and can no longer critique them you have lost your credibility. I don’t care who you’re sitting next to, you’re either a journalist or a fan.

@@NotAfraidToShowMyFace-zy4hx not really, it's based on the format on whatever show they're producing. You think a debate show has to have both sides balanced? Thats the essence of this, each side has to lean the other way and play devil's advocate to create interesting talking points so both fanbases can find a reason to be engaged and listen to the show.

I felt the same way about the "rap is dead" comment. Reminded me of a battle from 2008, Passwurdz vs Illusion Z*, where Pass had a line "This is what happens when the scene gets oversaturated, there's hella kids like him trying to rap because they're freakishly over-fascinated, but he ain't knowing half the basics." It's been that way for a while, with a lot of "fans" and briefly infatuated "rappers" jumping into something they see as trendy, without actually being interested enough to even know the equivalent of "half the basics" of the history and standards, which should be a pretty low bar to clear. But they're insincere, so their fake interest wanes when things don't go exactly their way, or when they realize they completely misread what they were allegedly a fan of, and then they want to declare the art dead instead of accepting they were never that into it, and it wasn't for them. *I actually feel like over the years, Z proved himself to be someone who genuinely cared about hip-hop and was in it because he genuinely cared, but Pass's overall point in his line still stands.

Oh man, I agree 100% with Elliot, I was just saying something the other day about how no one knows how to interview anymore (besides a select few, Quest Love is surprisingly good at it) most interviewers are now trying to use the person they are interviewing to build their own brand, which would be fine if the interviewer would shut the f*ck up and let the person they’re interviewing talk, I didn’t come to listen to the interviewers story about what happened today before they went on air, I want to hear the guest we don’t hear everyday on the same show. You get what I’m saying? I’m sick of going out of my way to see Tyler or someone being interviewed and having to spend 60-70% of the interview listening to the interviewer talk about himself. All that is besides the fact of “when did it become the norm for an interviewer to give their personal opinion on everything in the interview, isn’t the interviewer supposed to be kind of unbiased? They’re supposed to be getting the guests story to us listeners. There’s no professionalism anymore. Also, it’s mostly the fault of us listeners, we don’t demand professionalism anymore, most just want excitement and drama, and if they get to see a famous person get into an argument with whatever content creator who has no skills in journalism, they’re happy, they aren’t even aware they just got robbed of information in trade for drama. Sh*t drives me crazy. Damn, I said interviewer and interview a lot in this comment haha
