Wow!! High school and college radio memories, and the HH jingles🔥🔥. Being in the NY area and close to Baltimore , I remember hearing WMAR on many aircheck “tapes”. Awesome Ellis, many thanks 🙏.

At 4:34, Mr. Payne mistakenly calls Kajagoogoo "Eurythmics" instead, LOL!

This is the 8th WMAR-FM Hot Hits 106 on KZbin so far. Maybe 10th?

Did the station play records slightly sped up?

Suddenly I'm a 7 year old Rick again and this is on my Space 1999 wrist band radio (no really!). What a callback! Also, am I having a Mandela Effect moment or did WMAR 106 call themselves "K-106" at some point?

Yes. When they had to give up theWMAR calls, they became WMKR, K106.

Compared to the other Hot Hits stations I either heard at the time or have heard airchecks from, this didn’t sound like it was quite firing on all cylinders. The audio processing doesn’t seem very dialed in for 1983 CHR, and I sense the DJ was not entirely comfortable in the format.

I have a KITS aircheck from April 1983 and was only two months in with this same Hot Hits format and the night jock Richard Sands sounded somewhat disengaged with the format as well. However by the summer he was far more energized with the format. KITS in San Francisco was the only Mike Joseph’s Hot Hits station west of the Mississippi and is regarded as the lesser known of the Hot Hits stations that flourished in the Eastern US. Also this WMAR aircheck seems to be around July 1983 when the station was launched so perhaps it was in its “Break In Phase”.

This is the only example of 105 KITS during its Mike Joseph phase on KZbin kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4HOhI2df9yErZYsi=asQEVwbXTC6vYmfX

Jim Payne would be the second "alumnus" of Q94 (WRVQ Richmond) to take the air chair at a Mike Joseph consulted station...the first was "Bobalou" Bob Lewis (Norman Freedlander) who went to WBBM Chicago in 1982. (And I still hate those jingles...or maybe it's because there were 30 in an hour)
