WIFI 92 Philadelphia - Hy Lit - August 12 1973
In Philadelphia, there is one name that stands out at the down of Rock & Roll... Hy Lit!
Hyski was the man who brought Rock & Roll to the Delaware Valley, and played it uptown, downtown, cross-town, here there, almost everywhere.
Hy Lit became an overnight sensation in the 50's at 1340 WHAT & 1060 WRCV Radio.
He then became a Philadelphia phenomenon in the late 50's & 60's as one of the WIBBAGE Good Guys at WIBG Radio 99. His 6 to 10 PM nightly shift earned an unbelievable 71 share of the radio listening audience!
Hy was in demand at dance halls and night clubs as he did hops across the Philly area, as well as hosting TV shows.
Hy later became an FM pioneer with Hyski's underground at 105.3 WDAS FM in 1969 with album oriented radio.
Hy later went on to host radio shows at WIFI 92, 104.5 WSNI, 1540 WRCP, & 98 WOGL-FM.
After being on the air for almost half a century, Hysky went on to pioneer Internet broadcasting online at HyLitRadio.com.
Hy passed on, November 17, 2007.
Feel free to check out some of the many other videos on the Ellis B Feaster's Radio Channel! Established in 2008!
One of You Tube's oldest RADIO AIRCHECK MUSEUM with a NEW VIDEO posted daily at 3PM EST.
After over 40 years working on the radio, I have recorded lots of radio airchecks, and many from my friends as well.
You'll find audio of many radio personalities who have passed away. Lots radio recordings from the 1940s, through the 2010.
We also talk about radio broadcasting. If you happen to have classic airchecks, maybe even of yourself on the air, we'd love to share it here!
We also share videos about Travel & Cruising. I share tips on how I travel cheaply, so you can do it also! Find me on Facebook: / ellisairchecks

Great job Ellis, just found your KZbin site. Oversighted Hy Lit also did a stint at NJ's WKXW 'Kix 101 and devastating half' as Lit called it. May want to consider amending the KZbin synopsis a bit - Hy had been my radio hero as a child. Dropped his name intentionally in a music journalism story published in New Hope PA's 'Icon' magazine - a monthly dedicated to Bucks County PA lifestyle, edited/owned by Trina Roba. Having several copies of the subsequent in-print only edition I sought Lit via email. Wound up dialogue with his then caretaker son, Sam who has also since passed. I inquired if they might be interested in a copy although it was just a name drop, I'd be glad to hand deliver. They were eager to see it, went to their high rise apartment where Sam broadcast Hy's oldies channel. They had just purchased the entire Pam's jingle package as well. Was taken on as "the man we were waiting to meet" (?) They asked if I would be interested in doing his bio with a 33.3% split in perpetuity! Taken aback as you might imagine - I upped the ante with a corresponding screenplay offer. They had one caveat - I would need to use my Intellectual Property attorney to prepare "not more than a 2 page contract". I agreed and frequent CS tape Q&A began at their place as I was provided with every print archive to scan to digital. My girlfriend at the time worked diligently on that task. Meanwhile it had become self evident that their request to use my legal counsel had been due to being forced to sell Hy's home in Merion PA to litigate against CBS for cutting Lit's hours as his Parkinson's diagnosis became obvious. He lost his medical benefits as well. The Pam's Jingles and online Hy Lit Radio broadcast had been as they saw it their only immediate chance for a steady income to compensate their losses at WOGL. I created a rough sketch of each chapter titled for an appropriate golden oldie hit song along with what I envisioned the closing scene of the film to be. "Theme From A Summer Place" with Hyski walking away from the camera on the beach with his favorite book, Jonathan Livingston Seagull sticking out of his back pocket. The credits would roll, camera would follow Hy moving away from the camera l, pan to the sky and the bright summer sun as seagulls flew through the scene - up to a glorious sun encompassing the frame. I insisted - no hagiography. Gritty & real in every aspect. The Lit's were fine with it. I had yet to interview the then still very much alive Chuck Berry or countless other music A-listers or one hit wonders, Philly legends. Sam & Hy, after months of work insisted on witnessing the prepared contract. Rightfully so. Since these had been my initial and only contact with the father & son I had been optimistic that as we got to become better acquainted they might understand that a 2-page contract would protect no one. As advised by my my lawyer as well. Disheartened as they had no funds to pay their own attorney for reviewing the contract and too early for crowd funding we parted ways. I kept copies of everything with the Lit's permission and pledged to not share with anyone. I kept that promise. Hy died a broken man as the result of complications of knee surgery I believe. His 1st & 2nd wives had sucumb to Cancer probably each within a year or so of our introduction. He also lost his beloved cat. Had no known girlfriend at that time - early 2000's. Ironically there had been a gym the very next unit over from their 2 BR apartment where a partner may have been instrumental in helping Hy to work-out to maybe relieve some of the stress of his knee issues. They filed against CBS with both age & health discrimination, won on only one decision. Part of the undisclosed settlement included no on-air formal build-up to Hy Lit's final WOGL sign-off. He had maybe 2 minutes to wrap. Even in all of that unfortunate and unnecessary drama he thought to include yours truly in a short list of names including I believe his beloved daughter, Benna if I'm not mistaken. They went on to self publish primarily using my digitized photos. Not unsurprisingly it did not do well. RIP🙏 (5.20.34 - 11.17.07)

Listened to Hyski on WIBG in the 60's and then on WOGL. Hy and Joe Niagra were the big DJ's, WIBBAGE 99 (WIBG was a religious station before: I Believe in God) before the evolution of FM in Philadelphia

When I was at Devereux, I would listen to WIFI 92 a whole lot on the stereo in the teacher's room inside Mainhouse, which was a Lafayette AM/FM stereo receiver, Panasonic speakers- Panasonic stereo speakers, and a turntable. When Mr. Morgan worked, he'd bring in his record albums for me and Ali Alberini to listen to, such as: Rory Gallagher. Beck Bogert and Appice. Led Zeppelin. Procol Harum. Eric Clapton. B.B. King. Blue Oyster Cult. Lou Reed-Live. Emerson, Lake and Palmer. ELO. And then. we'd often listen to WMMR, and they played a whole lot of progressive rock and unidentified rock- stuff such as: Beatles. The Rolling Stones. Moody Blues. Kinks. Grateful Dead. Jefferson Airplane. New Riders Of The Purple Sage. Hot Tuna. David Bromberg. Leonard Cohen. Jerry Jeff Walker. Focus. Rory Gallagher. Beck, Bogert and Appice. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Neil Young. Buffalo Springfield. The. Byrds. Traffic. Dave Mason. Joe Cocker. Leon Russell. George Harrison. Bob Dylan. The Band. ZZ Top. Climax Blues Band. Robin Trower. Santana. Jimi Hendrix. Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Elvin Bishop. Tower of Power. Chicago. Blood, Sweat and Tears. The Ides of March. Smith. Gayle McCormick. Steppenwolf. B.B.King. Albert King. Howling Wolf. Muddy Waters. John Lee Hooker. The Marshall Tucker Band. Outlaws. Genesis. The Allman Brothers Band. Simon and Garfunkel. Paul Simon. Jackie Lomax. Yes. Rick Wakeman. Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Azar Lawrence. Miles Davis. John Coltrane. John Klemmer. Larry Coryell. The Mahavishnu Orchestra. Lightman and Trevas. Tiftowein. Fairport Convention. Montrose. Sandy Denny. The Strawbs. Renaissance. Pearls Before Swine. Pentangle. Leo Kottke. Bert Jansch. John Fahey. Jethro Tull. Deep Purple. Mott The Hoople. Free. Maria Muldaur. Linda Ronstadt. Jackson Browne. Wendy Waldman. Sly and the Family Stone. Janis Joplin. Johnny Winter. Edgar Winter. Rick Derringer. Paul McCartney and Wings. Loggins and Messina. The Eagles. Poco. David Bowie. Lou Reed. Velvet Underground. Frank Zappa. Mothers Of Invention. Jeff Beck. Beck, Bogert and Appice. Cate Brothers Band. Bat McGrath and Don Potter. Cream. Blind Faith. Eric Clapton. Derek and the Dominos. Ted Nugent. It's a Beautiful Day. Brewer and Shipley. Spike Jones and the Motor City Mountain Boys. The Lehman-Clifton Band. Bruce Springsteen. -Mark Weintraub.

Like this site, this one is supposed to be HySki, but most of it is Scott Taylor's newscast. that's OK, 'cause I like Scott from back in the day when he was the "Daddy-o of Soul" on 'HAT (66-68) did a decent job as news director at 92.5. Thanks !

It's a shame that took a long time for 56 wfil to come back as regular music f i l 56 would have been better off if they just left the formats alone but remember back in the day you had 99 FM wusl as a competitor radio station which two made the mistake and flip the country but once the damage is done they can never be brought back to regionality the DJs were never the same and exciting but for 56 wfil and US1 99 FM W USL that was the worst thing you could have gone with it was a format change because people change and times change I also thought kiss 100 FM would make it the top three leading radio stations in Philadelphia but today we lost 98.1 FM wogl the oldies station to music list appealing to us older people but these are changes we all must go through the music and the feelings are just not there with today's DJs and with more and more commercials added to the format radio will never be the same
