Holy cow. That mower looks like it sat on the ocean floor with the Titanic for 100 years.

Hello, I just wanted to thank you and let you know that I’m going to subscribe to your channel. I helped a friend with a John Deere X 300 and after watching your video we realize we probably had a stripped drive pulley. After watching your video, we also realize we can access that drive from the rare by taking the spring tension off, removing the clip and getting a new pulley putting thedrive belt back on the pulley and the tractor runs just fine now thank you very much for being thorough and also not charging that other gentleman for a transmission that he did not need you are awesome. Thanks.😊

It would be nice if you had a mower lift to raise the mower high enough to work on it while you are standing up but you can get it done while you are laying on the concrete
@philliphall5198 Жыл бұрын
You should build a rolling A frame to lift up the mowers which makes it easier to fix , remove bat, oil and seal gas cap with plastic bag , upupup and away
@daveerrington51667 ай бұрын
Not only is the pulley stripped, but the transmission gear coming out of it also is stripped. You have to weld it. Also, you should’ve changed the transmission fluid while it was out just my two cents.

Non text was on top. Thanks very much. That’s what I needed to know. Thanks for being honest but you didn’t have to do any of the work you did. Live and learn I guess. Don’t even have to pull the tension spring off.

Don't understand why they couldn't put a tapered pin or a key on this to prevent either from wearing out!

Two 8 mm screws loosen and flip gaurd. Remove snap ring and replace the pulley.

You missed the opportunity to change the transmission fluids while you had it off the mower. Changing the fluids will extend the life of that transmission.

i was towing a small trailer with some stuff in it, and it just completely stopped in place and made some weird noise in the rear. Whenever the pedals are pressed, there is zero movement. Would that also be that pulley in the rear?
@EllisMowersandmore Жыл бұрын
See if that pulley has a lot of play in it. If so, see if you can take it off. You should be able to with it still on the mower. That's probably what happened. Especially if yours is an early model X300 from around 2010 or so.

@@EllisMowersandmore yup. that pulley has play. i’ll replace that this weekend. thank you

The splines stripped because its a bad design. They were not that tight to begin with and they rub a little with each turn of the pulley. Dont forget the belt is pulling tension sideways. So eventually the splines wear. More so on the pulley than the input shaft of transmission. Should have been keyed and set screwed or something more sturdy.

Thanks so much for making this video, if I might ask where are you located where could I order or pick up that transmission pulley from other than possibly from John Deere?
@EllisMowersandmore8 ай бұрын
I'm in Durham NC. I have a link in the video description to the pulley you need.

Now that lifting is bad on your back and you’ll end up like me!!!!!!!!!
@jimsevigne8536 Жыл бұрын
If you knew it was a bad pulley in the first place, could you have taken the actual seat and metal body off from the top to gain access to the pulley to replace it? Just curious if that would work also.
@EllisMowersandmore Жыл бұрын
You probably could have accessed it from the side without taking anything off. Having a stubby impact driver would almost be a must unless you could figure out how to keep the pulley from turning so you can turn the nut.
@Dirtywhtboy879308 ай бұрын
Didn’t you say that tranny had some leaks? While the trans was already out and pulley off, I would have popped off the fluid fill cap to check the level of fluid and topped it off. Think you supposed to fill it within.75-1” from the top of the fill opening. If it’s low then filled up, will lengthen the life expectancy of that transmission.
@Dirtywhtboy879308 ай бұрын
Not only does fluid build pressure to function, but also serves as coolant to keep it from getting too hot and causing parts to prematurely fail…
@philliphall5198 Жыл бұрын
I think it’s just easier to pull wheels and have plenty of room but each his own Do you work on very many Zero turns ???

I am dealing with what I believe is the same thing with my John Deere s240. Can't you access this t- pulley by either the black carriage or by removing one back tire? TY

You should be able to. I have been able to on similar series mowers like the L, LA and D series.

This had around 400 hours. These are known to go over 1000 hours with minimal issue when taken care of.

X300. I have a high pitched grinding noise in forward and reverse. No movement when pedals are pressed. And ideas? Pulley??
@EllisMowersandmore Жыл бұрын
That's the same symptoms this machine had. See if there's a lot of play in the pulley. I bet that's what it is.
@2loonscalling437 Жыл бұрын
So my x300 stopped moving while mowing a few weeks ago. It makes a high-pitched sound, and barely moves. I cannot drive. Belt still on and the pully seems to be turning along with that fan when I push the pedal. Won't go forward or reverse. Does that sound like the transmission?
@EllisMowersandmore Жыл бұрын
You may have a sheared pulley too from the sounds of it. The pulley will still turn but the gears inside the pulley won't connect to the shaft on the transmission. If you can, take the belt off the transmission pulley and remove it. Pretty hard to do unless you have an impact, but at least by taking the belt off you could see if it has a lot of play and grabs onto the shaft.
