Yes, I know Tunisia very well. It's the largest city outside the capital, with a long history as a coastal hub, making its people naturally welcoming to foreigners. Don't pay attention to negative comments about the city from envious people; it's common in this poor country.
@azizhafsi59863 ай бұрын
Fun fact: Sfax is the city where the most millionaires and business owners in Tunisia come from. It's been at the top of the Tunisian high school national exam for the past 55 years. It's also the birthplace of most doctors and engineers in Tunisia. The combination of hard work, education, and wealth has made Sfax one of the most disliked cities in Tunisia. People who have never visited it think that the residents are greedy, cheap, and obsessed with money, attributing their wealth to these traits. However, in reality, they are hardworking and well-educated people. Some of the nicest people I've met during my university years were from Sfax, and they helped me pass some of my exams. Thank you, Sfax!

I agree. Sfaxians are hardworking and always on time (In five-star hotel Syphax the telephne used to be placed six meters far from your pillow to make sure that you won`t miss the usually very early appointment with a Sfaxian). Ah, and they have a lovely musical accent full of diphthongs.

In tunisia we make “rose water” or “me ward” using the flowers of the orange tree, that’s why it citrus, you put alot in your caffee 😅 it is actually most used with the traditional coffee or mokka and few droplets are enough
@EllisWR3 ай бұрын
Ahah big mistake!! We know now!
@alexmtl703 ай бұрын
Some people put "rose water" in their coffee, but that bottle was definitely "blossom plant water", it was written in Arabic ""Maa zhar", "maa" means water as you already know, and "zhar" means blossom plan flowers. These flowers used to be distilled by grandmothers ( i.e. tunisian babouchkas 😮), but this tradition is lost, I think. Maa zhar is also used as perfume in weddings, as medicine for people suffering from high fever and a kind of sunscreen/hat. mothers used to put some Maa zhar on their children' heads before they went out in hot summer day. Unfortunately, we lost many traditions in Tunisia.
@alexmtl703 ай бұрын
Maybe it's called Maa ward in some regions of Tunisia. Blossom plant flowers are collected from citrus trees. So, yeah we are talking about the same thing, just different terminology.

28:38 Back in the 2010s that particular species of Asian crab suddentlg appeared in Tunisia as an invasive species and decimated fish reserves off the coast. The war in Syria was at a crescendo at the time hence leading fisherman to name the black crab: "The Daesh Crab" as kindofa joke. The reason you see it so cheap is the same reason it was such a ruthless invasive species: Tunisians aren't accustomed to eating it... Since then however a big industry developed around its exportation to Asia and it has stopped being problematic.

You made a good point about olive oil. 25 dinars for a liter in the city which is considered to be the home of olive oil, is very expensive. That's about 13 CAD. That's the price one pays in Canada for one liter of olive oil produced in Spain, Italy or Greece. Olive oil produdced in Tunisia costs about 9 CAD a liter here. About 18 TD. Olive oil produced in Algeria and Tunisia has an aftertaste compared to oil produced in Europe, as you might have noticed. I used to hate that aftertaste some years ago, but I love it now and prefer oil produced in Northern Africa to oil produced in Southern Europe, but that's just me. I tend to be picky when shopping for coffee, red wine, bread, and olive oil. That fish market looked nice. It looked like a bank, not a fish market!

You and your friend are nice because you are close to the people and are spontaneous like Tunisians, and your videos touch the living reality in deep Tunisia, and that is why I decided to subscribe to your channel and I will host you and your friend in my house for free in the southwest of Tunisia at the Institute of Qapsian and Roman Civilization (Gafsa). Welcome to both of you.
