NASCAR had a solid option with Johanna Long and squandered it. She had several solid runs in crap equipment, and as far as fans know, was never offered a better ride. Would she have been a cup champion? Hard to say, probably not, but we'll never know. But what I really respected about her was that she never acted like "the girl driver" in NASCAR, she presented herself as a driver like any other. She showed up to race, and that's what she did. I think she got overlooked because she didn't have that "oh look at me, I'm a pretty girl in a fast car" persona, and by extension, was probably not considered "marketable" by teams and companies, which, if true, exemplifies where the zeitgeist's mind lays when it comes to female drivers. I'm not saying she is/was unattractive, but the fact I have to clarify anything regarding her appearance when discussing the popularity of a female driver exemplifies how female drivers are perceived. Their appearance shouldn't matter, but, let's just say there's a reason Danica or Decker have so successful, despite their abysmal on-track performance. It sounds like Johanna is doing well now, married with kids, so we'll never know. All we can do it hope someone else comes along with the same level of drive and talent that doesn't get overlooked simply because they don't look good on a poster or make flashy internet headlines. But until that mindset changes, I'm unfortunately not holding my breath.

Love this comment. I bring up drag racing quite often when I come across guys who act like "women can't cut it" in motorsports. Shirley Muldowney, all 3 Force sisters, Leah Stewart, Alexis DeJoria, Erica Enders, Angele Sampey, Angie Smith, Melanie Troxel, Lori Johns... there's an extensive list of women who succeeded and, sometimes, dominated their class in the sport. The difference I've seen between drag racing and other motorsports is that all these women needed to gain their sponsorships and opportunities was to drive the hell out of their vehicle of choice. Call them all "tomboys" if you must, but any woman who's into racing can be considered one. These women carry themselves as another one of the guys, and still had to face discrimination for being women. But coming out and kicking everyone's asses shifts the conversation quite a bit. Ever since Dale Sr. and Jeff Gordon realized the potential of marketing themselves as a brand in NASCAR to bring fans to the sport, that's been what puts you in a seat. I've heard stories of exceptional drivers who missed an opportunity to land a top ride because they couldn't secure the funding. So either you come in with the money in-pocket, or you have to be marketable. Unfortunately, people (male and female alike) don't like to look at women as "racers." It's like coming across a female construction worker; rather than praising their ability and giving them the best opportunity, it's more, "what are they doing here?" I think real female driving talent is lost in this day and age due to how many hats they have to wear to remain relevant. Hell, even Danica was wore thin between trying to race, selling a brand, and marketing herself. Sure, many drivers have to do it, but imagine the pressure of being the new face of the sport. Then having to keep that image up while SOMEHOW improving their craft. In the same token, women like Johanna never get their chance to show what they can really do, because they're not about being in front of a camera or on a social media feed... they're about being behind a wheel and on a race track.
@BUSCUIT2829 күн бұрын
@@JReaLBiz86 - The rise in pay drivers speaks volumes. I'm not saying every pay driver is bad (Joey Logano being a prime example), but drivers able to buy a seat vs earn a seat is shrinking, and women are going to be at even more of a disadvantage in this market.

Eric Estep is a dorky want-to-be. It is dudes like him that are actually killing NASCAR by whining constantly about drivers who get a little too angry -- and aren't above using their fists if the situation calls for it. If I had a dollar for every time that clown whined about drivers airing their differences ... I would be rich. NASCAR was built on drivers being themselves and fighting for every inch as opposed to girly-men who probably hid in the corner when someone took the apple out of his lunchbox back in elementary show. That is what youtube does ... gives douche bag want-to-be's an outlet to pretend like they have an opinion that matters. Dude should be following IRL or maybe drifting. Zero business speaking on or about NASCAR. I have a theory that tools like Estep are the reason why racers like Deegan get opportunities. At one point -- I thought she may make it. When it became blatantly obvious that what she really cared about are clicks and mentions on social media -- it should have been the point where all of us ducked out. We all know Danica ended -- but at least she had done something before she got there. The only thing on Hailie's resume was making videos with her douchey boyfriend. It was never about racing ... it was always about being a social media personality. So mission accomplished for her I guess. And shame on her for most likely taking the opportunities of females in the future.

I feel like compared to the rest of the racing world, NASCAR has such a bad history with women drivers. From everything that happened with Danica to Johanna Long not being able to find a ride to them trying to discredit Janet Guthrie in the (71?) firecracker race. It’s at least pretty good to see a lot of drivers in other series (especially sports car racing) like Dorian Pin, Lilou Wadoux, Jamie Chadwick, Michelle Gatting, and Abbi Pulling having super successful careers already considering they’re all pretty young. It’s a good shift away from the boys club racing has always been.

Good video, although that Xfinity part doesn't tell the full tale. AM Racing had a plethora of drivers share the seat after Deegan's exit including Logano who basically had to help the crew chief do his job. The team was in over their heads when Moffitt got the boot and seemed like they had no idea what they were doing. That's not to make an excuse for Hailie she simply wasn't cut out for that ride to begin with, but every one else in that car not named Logano didn't do much better either.
@Zoniax-zc7xh29 күн бұрын

I feel like Hallie Deegan is a pretty sad case, because she did & does have talent, but no one is really trying to let her grow it. And most, if not all the opportunities given to her since 2020 were really going to kill her career. 2020 was DGR, in which she did alright but she should've had more time to grow her talents. Being pushed up to Trucks was never a good choice, and it especially sucks because they were a generally Mid team with only one really good truck, as we've seen this year. Some drivers like Brett Moffitt & Taylor Gray can do alright, but they're not Corey Heim levels of contending, which is clearly a common case with teams like Niece. And as for Thorsport, Jake Garcia has also struggled immensely in the 13, Matt Crafton looks set to retire & Ben Rhodes barely made the playoffs as the defending champion, while Ty Majeski did Majeski things. They're slowly dying & falling behind BMR, Spire & Tricon and nearly getting beat by single car truck teams. And as for AM Racing, their crew chief couldn't take criticism and barely knew how to work the car, and AM as a whole aren't doing well at all. Any deal she was offered seemed to be with a team that would kill her career further. But on the other hand, she never showed any raw pace & abilities to warrant a call against the team. Thorsport & DGR weren't great teams, but more top 10s were expected rather than just top 2s. AM Racing may not have had a crew chief who knew how to loosen up a car, but they got some solid races with Joey Logano & others, showing that they had some pace. In short, Deegan was rushed so quickly that any opportunity to go higher up was with worse and worse teams, but she never did anything to show it wasn't solely her fault. I don't think she'll find much success in Indy, but there's genuine pace on dirt for her, and I hope she can be happy there.

I keep seeing this comment and I still fail to see why people keep making it.... A KZbin video can be shot and edited in a few hours, easily. Her channel posts, on average, 1 video per week. The videos are/were edited by Chase Cabre. NASCAR restricted practice to 20-30 minutes, depending on the series. NASCAR banned teams from testing outside of sanctioned test events where NASCAR chooses the drivers to participate. The only real options left are iRacing and manufacturer simulators. The manufacturer simulators are great if the team has one, but they have to be shared amongst other drivers in a multi-car team. iRacing is great, except you'd have to have the race team create a setup for every track and be there to adjust it for weather conditions. Nothing beats seat time and NASCAR has restricted that to the bare minimum in the name of "cutting costs"...

You know it bad when a team would rather have lance stroll than danica Patrick
@DuvJones26 күн бұрын
Fair enough, but he still has a seat for another reason... check out his last name, then check the last name to the owner of the team. It should be very similar, in fact his dad (Lawrence) does not just owned the F1 team. He owns the entire brand.

That Danica segment was basically how I felt at the time of that inexplicable statement (except the failed F1 bid and the whole reptilian thing, I didn't know about those)

In all honesty it’s getting bad with the rushing people up especially now with Toni getting rushed up too. As for the question on who the female star will be I’m going with Katie Hettinger or Lanie Buice, both are with good teams and have talent
@aaronthomas615528 күн бұрын
Toni isn't getting rushed up.. She's been in the ARCA series for several years. Her performance in ARCA has been mediocre at best.
@TmartucciJr7728 күн бұрын
@@aaronthomas6155has she completed a full arca year? I’m honestly curious on that because I can’t remember if she did and mediocre is an understatement

@TmartucciJr77 She was supposed to be running the full season this year but I have no idea if she's done it in any past seasons.

Biggest difference between Hailee and Danica is that Hailee is a real racecar driver. Her family, fiance, all her friends, and her KZbin career is dedicated to racing. Danica on the other hand seems to be more interested in a glamorous lifestyle. Hailee always did the best she could and took advantage of every opportunity while maintaining a positive attitude and a rockstar level of coolness. She's awesome, overhyped or not.
@jonasblomme125229 күн бұрын
I think it speeks volumes that Danica said on the Joe Rogan podcast that she isn't interested in cars. She just happens to be good at driving them. I don't understand how that can be lol. She doesn't seem to have passion. It's just a boring office job for her it seems

As someone who road races in California, the entire racing and car scene is not kind to any sort of feminine presence. The young guys are doing better but the old heads that hold more influence are toxic as hell. Hopefully with time and more new people the scene will become more inviting, but there’s a lot of internalized misogyny, built up over decades and more, that we ALL have to work on. And if we don’t, we’ll just have Hailey Deegans instead of Jamie Chadwick’s, and Michelle Muton’s

It can be done. Look at NHRA. There are several women who have not only won races, but championships. Shirley Muldowney got it done in top fuel in the 70s and 80s. Erica Enders grew up in a race car. Got put in the spotlight early with the Disney Channel movie, and now has 6 pro stock championships so far. Theres also Brittney Force in top fuel who has 2 championships so far. Though she did get her ride mostly because of her name.

Man its almost like somehow if your rich and your whole family races and gives you everything you need you can make it anywhere if you want. Hmmmmm
@jfridy24 күн бұрын
I agree with you. I want the best drivers. There are good, even great women out there, but like everyone else, they will need time, mentorship, and opportunity to shine. The trick is not shoving them into the spotlight because it will get attention, but making sure you give them a fair chance to earn their way up.

Deegan should’ve expanded further into off road before jumping to asphalt. Do some point to point races instead of just short course prepped tracks.
@MichaelS-kg9ci22 күн бұрын
I’ve said before and still truly believe that Deegan’s downfall was caused by her only spending a year in ARCA. If she had been in that 4 car for another year or two, and then moved to Trucks after that, she would probably still be in NASCAR today. That’s just my opinion tho.
