Yuki should have been promoted because he is more disposable than Liam. There is a very big chance Liam's career will take the same trajectory as Alex and Pierre's. If this happens, he will be lucky to have a drive in 2026. Yuki is more experienced, and RB already know they don't want to keep him, so either he has an ok year against Max or he drowns while Liam gets the experience he needs to grow into his promotion for 2026.
@alfie5371
@alfie5371 18 күн бұрын
Valid, but from the Yuki perspective, if Liam does drown hard like Pierre, Albon and 2024 Checo. He's probably in the car for the 2nd half of the year, knowing he's losing his seat, he'll have nothing to lose but everything to prove so if he could do better, he could be in the RB in 2026

I mean he is really only there because of Honda, and very likely to go to aston in 2026. Why bother giving a seat to an experienced guy you know is going to leave instead of a rookie who could burst out (or, at least, not straight up lose you the WCC)?

god I hope RB never win a title with Max again. Toto isn't perfect but he actually does support his team/drivers, Bottas/Ocon/Russell have been treated fairly, Toto didn't stop til Bottas had a plan post Merc. Horner dropped Albon/Gasly midseason, kept Checo for (OMG IT'S BEEN!!) 4 years! and is now signing another rookie over a more experienced young Yuki. Credit to RB, they've had a strong academy but the past few years the decisions have truly been baffling.

(Unless daddy buys you one) There's 4 complete rookies in the 2025 grid and 2 more that haven't even completed a half seasons worth of races. I think to explain Christian Horner‘s perspective best, you’ve got to think about the fact that it took Liam very very little time at all to match (relatively speaking) Yuki, whereas Yuki‘s start in 2021 was much rougher and took a lot longer to settle in, and what the team needs is a driver that can very quickly just get into that Red Bull and be on it. TLDR: Liam‘s immediate pace shows more potential for the future than Yuki’s, considering the smaller timeframe and lack of experience

Even if that was true, it'd be smarter to move Yuki up first. Even if Liam was for certain a more talented driver, you couldve given Liam a full year to acclimatize, especially since we know Yuki is at least reliable. Now, Liam has to do what basically every other driver has failed to do - and if he doesn't cut it, his career is probably over before it really begins. Sergio Perez was an amazing driver when he went to RB, way better than Liam, look at how that turned out. You have to have an insane amount of confidence in Liam

Wouldn't surprise me if Yuki gets a Honda IndyCar seat for Road and Street courses with Sato taking the ovals until Yuki is ready to do those too. He recent tested an IndyCar for a Honda promo at Thermal I think. In the meantime he will be Aston Reserve on Indy off weekends like Pato is doing. It wouldn't surprise me either if he picks up either Alonso's or Lance's seat at some point though. Honda wants to make sure they can keep attracting Japanese talent and showing them they have a road to the show. The battle between them and Toyota for top tier talent is real, and one of the reasons Honda had good young Japanese drivers is because of the F1 link. With Toyota taking on it's Haas partnership this Honda advantage is now gone and they still need to prove they can put good drivers in good seats.

He wasn't. RedBull openly stated that Yuki is currently the faster but the mentally weaker driver. And as seen with Gasly, Albon and Perez they need someone who is mentally resilient in the second seat. All those drivers are pretty good but crumbled under the pressure at RedBull. Tsunoda would be no different. Also his gap to Lawson is pretty small when taking into account that he has 8x the experience in F1.

Only reason Tsunoda even got into F1 was because of Honda's connection and that's also the only reason why he stayed as long as he did. In those 4 years, he made only slight improvements and only looked good because his teammates either underperformed badly (Ricciardo) or were just straight up bad (De Vries). If he is actually good enough, other team will pick him for 2026. If not, he at least had longer run than many drivers get. As for Lawson, he was trimmed for Red Bull seat for a while. That's why he was sent to DTM and Super Formula (AKA actually competitive senior series) and did well in both of them. He was also Red Bull's test driver for years and his substitute performances were, while not great, perfectly serviceable. Now, is he ready for Red Bull seat? I still have my doubts and I think that he could have used a full year in Toro Rosso (or whatever it's called now), but Red Bull screwed up by first giving seat to De Vries (based on single race performance) and then Ricciardo who they kept for another year. If not for those blunders, Lawson would have had 2 full seasons under his belt and it would be clearly seen how he stacks up against other drivers. As it is, it's anyone's guess what will happen next. I do hope that he does well and has similar year to Piastri's 2023 season. So yes - Red Bull did screw up but not in the way most people would say.

De Vries is overhated a bit. He struggled at the start but was beating Yuki before he got sacked. If you look at averege grid position and race results Nycks are better than Yuki's. He just had bad luck that car was the worst on the grid and Yuki scored more points than him, but that is like saying Kubica beat Russell cause he did get a point and Russell didn't. Fact is Nyck was also still a rookie and Yuki had way more F1 experience. Nyck was performing on a similar level as Ricciardo. Which yes wasn't good enough but the only reason he was sacked was because Red Bull expected him to be an immediate performer and weren't interested in giving him time to develop.

Meaning he can adapt if the car isn’t tailored to his liking, like Checo complained during his time there. Liam isn’t there to compete with Max, he’s there to pick up the points Max leaves. Yuki wouldn’t sit by and let Max take the role because of his short tempered personality

How has Yuki proven himself? By throwing tantrum after tantrum? By getting involved in many accidents? By Red Bull having to hire a coach to help him with his anger management? Yuki Tsunoda ONLY got that position because HONDA wanted him there. When Honda walked away from F1, that meant Yuki would have to prove himself on his own merits and he didn't succeed in doing that. Yes, he has calmed down somewhat and yes, he now consistently puts in decent performances, but Yuki no longer has Honda backing and thus doesn't bring anything into Red Bull. And you can't even argue that he didn't get a fair chance, because he has been with Red Bull for more years than other rookie drivers, who sometimes didn't even get a single season to prove themselves.

I agree with the sentiment that it would have made sense to give Yuki the Red Bull seat for 2025 in order for Liam to get more experience in F1, but if Red Bull is going to get rid of Yuki by the end of next year they may have felt that it wasn’t worth promoting him. It’s apparent that senior Red Bull management doesn’t like Yuki very much and he’s only there to placate Honda. In reality, I think it comes down to attitude and expectations. Liam will happily play a support role for Max for a couple of years whereas Yuki, having been in F1 for four years, may not be willing to do so. Yuki is probably more likely drive straight into Max by attempting overly aggressive overtakes in order to prove to Horner/Marko that he’s the real deal. Moreover, Max may just not want him as his teammate. The decision isn’t “fair” in the true sense of the word, but life isn’t fair either. So, Yuki is just going to have to get on with it and try to impress the other teams on the grid.

Plus, Liam has tested for Red Bull, he’s been their sim driver too, directly helping with car development so he should know how to get close to the ceiling of an actual Red Bull car. To summarise, Red Bull have invested a lot in Liam since his junior days and is likely to have a higher ceiling than Yuki, so I can see why they went for him.

It was painfully clear that they made their minds up the second they dropped Daniel. Liam is the right choice, but - if you're gonna hop on the first flight out of Abu Dhabi while letting Yuki do the millionaire racing driver's equivalent of the younger sibling playing with an unplugged controller just to appease Honda and/or the fans - the decision to pick the Kiwi says nothing about the drivers and everything about the toxic bigotry of Horner and his upper management.
