Although the American Elmer Bernstein (1922-2004) started
his musical career as pianist, in 1950 he was asked to write the
music for a new film production by Columbia Pictures. Now,
more than 50 years later he has become an icon in the film industry,
having written pieces for over 150 movies and television
series and having been awarded multiple times.
One of his best known and successful compositions is the one
he wrote for ‘The Magnificent Seven’. In this Western, seven
adventurers have to save a little Mexican village from a group
of looters. Bernstein explained that he was looking for a powerful
rhythm which he associated with the atmosphere of the
Wild West. During a drive in the Californian plains suddenly
the main theme revealed itself to him. One of the most popular
melodies ever written was born.
