My late grandfather had a pendulum clock. I marvelled at its chimes when I was little. However, the next door neighbor complained about the noise, so my grandfather switched the chime and hours off. That clock still exists at my 90-year-old grandmother's house and it still works. Marvellous piece of engineering.

I think it could be that they are from a time long before the chaos of modernity, a more sedate time when people generally didn’t rush around everywhere and there was no noisy traffic or thumping “music” etc. the same sort of feeling old buildings give you. I remember the grandfather clock my dad’s aunt had. Dad was born in 1909 and his aunt was an old woman when I was at pre-school age more than 60 years ago and it was handed down to her. It was a dark oak clock. I love the loud tick-tock of them. Very relaxing. I love spotting them in period dramas. One old thing I can’t ever remember seeing in any house is an oil lamp, the kind you also see in period dramas. I love seeing people turn them up in dramas, so I bought an Edwardian one. I love lighting it. I also reckoned it will come in handy in a power cut.

My grandson will be 2 in under 2 weeks. He is utterly besotted with my grandfather’s clock. I open the glass door for him and he goes Whoa whoa whoa!!! When the clocks chime he drops everything and listens with his little mouth open. Reading all your comments, I am glad the memory will stay with him, the clocks will eventually pass on to him, I hope he will enjoy it then as he does now.

I miss the sound of a grandfather clock. My aunt and uncle had one, and I spent a lot of my summer's at their house. My parents eventually bought for our house, but left it behind when they moved in 10'. Hearing the chimes just makes me think of childhood and that feeling of being safe and secure.

My parents bought one of these in the 80's after they retired. I thought it was dumb. Now we have it and after 10 years I finally got it fixed (the hour gong cable snapped). And for some reason we're all fascinated by it like it was from Ben Franklin's time.

Dude I’m visually impaired and that causes me to get scared by those things because I don’t know they’re coming. Don’t ever expect me to say “Bro” in my comments. I hate that word, people should just say “brother” instead of shortening it to “bro” because it sounds better to just say “Brother” so I’ll never say “bro” in my comments.

My grandparents had one of these in the '70s, they had it set to either St. Michael's or Whittington. It was off in a corner and yeah, the way the chimes would play, reverb and fade away was to me as a kid back then, creepy. But now that it's been gone for decades and I'm near 50, I miss it and this is sort of like getting to visit there with them again.

I bought an antique grandfather clock (coffin box style) when we lived in Germany in 2015. Last year my husband must have moved the slide in the clock when he was pulling the chains to wind it up. Next quarter hour, we had a different chime (St. Michael). Our dog even noticed and started barking at the different chime. I thought the clock was malfunctioning until we opened the case again and saw it had the slide to change the sound. I much prefer the Westminster.

Just fixed my triple chime Keininger. It had a warped arbor on the time chain wheel. FYI, if your clock runs fine, then the center weight falls suddenly, this may very well be the issue. That was what was wrong with mine. The gears of the time chain wheel would come disengaged with the gear train because of the warped arbor. No one I asked about it knew what the problem was. I did a lot of inspection to figure it out. Also note, Keininger does not sell a K series time chain wheel at the moment, but the R series wheel fits...found this out by experimentation. This means The K, R, and M series all have the same time chain wheel (K and M series are the same, K is just thicker hardware).

I bought an Emperor clock movement (Emperor 100M Replacement Movement Kit (#209)) and built a Grandfather Clock Case from scratch and installed the movement. I built it for my daughter in 2006 and it looks & sounds great in her home. There is a small engraved plate with my name and the date inside the front door. My hope is it will be passed down to one of her children and ultimately to their children's children. I left the drawings I had created, while designing the case, in the base of the cabinet and attached a horseshoe (open side up for good luck) in the top portion of the clock behind the movement. One day maybe a great, great grandchild will discover it and think back to their great, great grandfather in the old timey days of the early 2000's. I wish I had something one of my grandfathers had made that was passed down, but alas, no. However, I get a special feeling every time I hear the ticking when visiting my daughter, son-in-law & grandchildren.

It’s funny how the clock bells are in the music key of A major. In fact you get the descending scale pattern on Whittington and St. michael’s. Thing is though, the scale almost sounds like A, G#, F#, E, D, C#, B, D#, because the lower A is somewhat distorted or bent in pitch almost like a tritone.

@@cherri6528 so basically the numbers around the clock mean the hour. To figure out the minute you multiply the number the minute hand is on by 5 and the little tic marks in between the numbers mark the minutes in between the 5 minute increments. Once you get used to it it gets easier :)

But the mantle has a speaker to it so they must have modernized it. But it’s old! Like 70 years old!

There was a large 1912 grandfather clock in my family that my great great grandfather bought when he came here, and then my grandpa sold it for $800 in the 90's and my dad is super pissed
