The co-founder of the 1970s rock band Electric Light Orchestra, which had such hits as "Livin' Thing," "Showdown," "Mr. Blue Sky" and "Evil Woman," has returned, with Jeff Lynne's ELO. David Pogue sits down with Lynne, the singer, songwriter and producer who's also brought his touch to such artists as George Harrison, Tom Petty and Aerosmith.

*@ktpinnacle* Closely associated with George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, even Tom Petty. No more words are necessary, really I am a musician & therefore understand the challenge & the difficulty of performing such highly-developed music- - how much more so in creating original works myself. So, there's little more to add... Not to ignore those other greats, Tom Petty & George Harrison (Rest In Peace, gentlemen) are among the very best singer-songwriters the 20th Century has to offer. There are maybe 20 in the entire world on that are on that level of musical imaginativeness & musicianship: John Mellencamp, Steve Winwood (also English; also a fully autonomous recording artist, producer, & multi-instrumentalist), James Taylor, George Benson, Gordon Lightfoot, Ronnie Milsap, Karl Jenkins (of Soft Machine, De Wolfe Music, & Adiemus), John Barry, Dave Grusen, etc To be fair, of truly exceptional women who are singer-songwriters there are: Enya, Cyndi Lauper, Sade, Dolly Parton, The Bangles, Christine McVie & Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac, Belinda Carlisle & the Go Go's, Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders, & others Jeff possesses that singular quality that you see really stands out in other musical geniuses. I can honestly say it's true of nearly every one of the musicians just named. But it's no tiny coincidence that these men & women produce music of such artistry & eloquence that they do: They're all down-to-earth & humble. You'll notice that when David Pogue suggested that he is "A shy, reluctant rock-star who's a perfectionist & a _genius,_ " Jeff expressed discomfort: "Oh, I don't know about that last bit." (6:45) Especially grateful to CBS for sharing this topic. Eclectic music that truly makes us better people from the inside, making our world a better place. Music is my passion & my life. *_We create reality everyday in the way we treat each other._* Good music plays an essential role in this

@@magnificentmuttley154 so not to be a contrarian but... "I am a Musician" means nothing. Do you have to be a chef to understand food? or maybe a mechanic to figure out how your car works? The logical fallacy of using a "authoritative person" to back up an argument really shouldn't be done. This is like someone who is a tanker who also plays World of tanks complaining that a particular tank is real enough. The bottom line is, in your experience X,Y and Z are true, Not because you are a musician. I'm hoping i'm not coming off to hostile here since that isn't my purpose, instead i'm trying to point out a fallacy in your argument. Either way... Have a nice night. :)

*@David Miller* It's only a conversation, David; an opportunity to express one's opinions Disagreement, frustration, criticism (constructive, hopefully), compromise, & re-adjustments to my thinking are all part of the landscape. People will be people, afterall: they will always be saying or doing something I dont agree with; I accepted that long ago. So I dont take your words as hostile Anyway, maybe if I clear this up you won't see my last comment as a fallacy. No, one doesn't have to be a professional chef to fully appreciate well-crafted gourmet foods; one need not be a musician to relax & enjoy a sophisticated musical piece. All I was ssying is that _as a musician,_ I understand the hard work involved in building a musical arrangement, the challenges of getting a new song from concept onto staff paper, and the continual challenge of improving one's skill & execution that makes sophisticated, multi-faceted music difficult to perform; to make it a reality... The greater majority of people aren't musicians. So, although appeal & appreciation for good music is universal, an in-depth understanding of the creative process & the various labors involved is not :)

But ya gotta admit, if his hair were _long & straight_ instead of _long & afro'ed_ he'd be another Cousin It from the _Addam's Family._ Just omit the fangs: 👹 Because it was an everyday fad, I got used to the "super-fro." I've got the Jackson Five, Patrice Rushen, Sly & the Family Stone, & countless other performers to thank for it, too. (Not being sarcastic here) But all these years later I must've forgot what hairy beasts some of 'em really were. A prime example would be Billy Preston & every member of his band, when they performed _Nothing From Nothing_ on a 1973 episode of _Soul Train._ I was truly shocked to see that again! For all I know every one of them was simply wearing a very convincing wig. But Billy? It's hard to tell. Maybe not! 😆

wanderer1955 That’s sort of disappointing to hear actually, I would have thought it was the other way around. I’ve seen bands like Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters, and even Toto tour in Europe like crazy, because real music just isn’t embraced by the masses in the U.S. anymore. The mainstream stuff is just computer manufactured crap. Every time I watch a video of an American band playing rock based pop music over there, the crowd is huge, and is going out of their minds! It might be a generational thing, no matter the residing country, which is sad. Music like ELO’s is pure genius and beautiful.

Some facts about Jeff Lynne (ELO)...First, he is a very humble man, simply because this Music Genius is not interested in fame, the limelight, and money, he just loves to create great music. Jeff Lynne is one of the most versatile musicians ever, this is why he is considered by his peers to be among the greatest. He didn't stick to one style of music because, after decades, it gets boring. Jeff has done progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock - Pop, New wave, and Disco. Everything he does turns to gold. He even flirted with Country music. From 1972 to 1986 (During 14 years) Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra has had more top 40 hits than any other group in the world... 51 years later they still play in sold-out Arenas, festivals and Stadiums. During Jeff Lynne's ELO 2019 Tour, many reviews agreed in saying they are the best live Classic Rock Band in the world still touring and Jeff Lynne is a Music Genius( From Forbes Magazine and the Washington Post). ELO is in the Rock Hall of Fame. Lynne is on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and Birmingham Walk OF Fame. Jeff Lynne’s ELO won the Best Classic Rock Band plus Lynne won the best Songwriter award ( ASCAP ) in 2019 for his fantastic contribution over the years. In October of 2020, Jeff Lynne has been made an officer of The Order Of The British Empire for his extraordinary contribution to music. He previously has received three Ivor Novello Awards, which celebrate songwriters and composers, including the award for outstanding services to British music. He created the best Super Group of all time with his best friend George Harrison, The Traveling Wilburys. The Legends in the Music Industry call Jeff Lynne the best overall Musician ever and a Producer Extraordinaire. Jeff Lynne has written and produced many hit songs for music legends like George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Joe Walsh, Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Del Shannon, the Everly Brothers, The Beatles, and so many others...

And I can't believe how great he still sounds. Love the new album. Jeff, did you have any idea when you were writing all of those songs in the 70's that they would still be SO loved in 2020?? They are as profound and moving today as they were back then. You are a treasure as a man and a musician!

I've always liked most types of music, and familiar with a lot of songs, but talk about having my head in the sand. I had heard of ELO, but never realized which songs they did, and the mastery of Jeff Lynne. Truly an amazing and super talented man. After realizing the songs he has written, produced, produced, and performed I am blown away. I'm a true fan of his after decades of being totally out of touch with ELO. This interview, several years ago, reveals what a humble man this music genius is. It's rare and nice.

Heck, he'd love the whole album just as I do. May JL long be with us. Remember, he and Bob Dylan are the 2 remaining members of the Wilburys. Rock on Jeff! And good luck for the new album.
