In 2024 if your hair color isn't updating with the Arnold Material that you specified in Custom Shader, you need to apply the material to the mesh you applied the hair and fur modifier to. I kept getting green hair in my render and it took me forever to notice it was because of the color of the mesh as it had no material applied.

Hello Eloi! About getting a gradient effect along hair in Arnold using Standard Hair, you can use an Arnold Ramp _RGB or float_ and set the *implicit UVs to "on"*

Problem I had doing this was on animation the colors was drifting somehow, or maybe was just my perception. Thanks for pointing it out!

yes for the root to tip color you need a "Ramp foat" and in the setting put Type: "V" and "Implicit Uv" : "On" I use it on the Melanin Channel to get the tip brighter Blond than the Root ;)

3dsmax is definitely in need of a new set of hair grooming tools! Blenders tools is much better, and Maya is way ahead!

Totally agreed. General workflow in 3dsmax feels outdated, more if compared with Blenders hair, or maya xgen. For some basic hair its ok, and you can still archive some nice quality results, but overall needs to be reworked for todays standards.

@@wonderboy75 hair and fur its an exterior technology from 3dsmax, so not sure they can do much over it... and its so old, that will make more sense start from scratch. Also, knowing that bifrost will have a strong impact on the next tools created in maya and max, I think that if we see new grooming will be based on bifrost. People are doing cool stuff already in maya. We need higher level tools though.vimeo.com/505906986

I don't expect Mudbox to be fully integrated into 3dsmax but I think improved sculpting tools is part of their roadmap.

@@wonderboy75 Yes, exactly, on the roadmap improving sculpt tools are there. Integrating mudbox in 3dsmax is not as easy as it could sound, a lot of max need to change to adopt a proper sculpting tools.

Usually I don't use to add comments on youtube, but this modifier it is so old. No offense Eloi and please don't understand me wrong but why do you choose to advertise this old tech system in the year of 2021 when do you have new tech already as native for other DCC? Hair & Fur it is outdated. Do you know when was the last serious update for this modifier? I mean Hair & Fur is a strong modifier, but soooo old and limited. You mention other hair plugins. Cem Yuksel stop the development for HairFarm since 2018 and for this one I was sorry because in my opinion was the best and powerfull hair groom solution from the market. The only decent solution now for grooming in max from where you can get serious updates is Ornatrix. 3ds max use old technology and it need a lot of improvment. From UI, modifier list (why do we have to deal with 3-4 subD modifiers, or 3 optimization modifiers, or 5 FFDs and so on when the function it is the same) to the total installation size. And the improvement it is happening but with the snail speed (I don't know why. Maybe the team size it is too small or they run out of ideeas..or they are not payed enough, don't know what is the reason). I don't want to compare with the updates for other DCCs. Users have begun to migrate to other DCC, mainly Maya, others to blender because they are frustrated by what seems to be indifference. I hope to they don't kill this DCC as it was happend with XSI. I am a native 3dsmax user and I am using since 2002. I hate the ideea to migrate to another software. I still consider this app the best and the most powerfull DCC. "It's like a ninja" :)

I did the tutorial, because I get some request, and I found there was no information about hair&fur together with Arnold, and some things are not evident to do. I totally agree with you, hair & Fur has not been touched in years, and most other applications has a more uptodate solutions. However, Hair and fur, even outdated can be more than useful for some situations, static fur on carpets, or some static hair, so I hope this tutorial can help people needing this. I think max team is doing a great job during last few years, a Lot of things are changing, some maybe not as evident as others as involve internal tweaking of 3dsmax to keep pushing forward on future areas, but development on last versions are far from "small". cganimator.com/unofficial-3dsmax-whats-new/ At the same time, yes, Max need a face lift in multiple areas that so far has not been touched, but if they keep the momentum, great things will come in multiple areas soon.
