The reality is still that most child kidnapping is by an estranged parent, and most child abuse is from people known to the child - the danger is not from strangers, yet our society is conditioning our children to feel unsafe outdoors. In my province, parents can be prosecuted if their children are outdoors unsupervised under the age of 11. Parents can not allow their young children to play in the neighbourhood park by themselves, walk to and from school by themselves, go to clubs or other activities by themselves, This puts a huge burden on parents, and further limits the time children have to play outdoors. Of course, instead of playing outside with friends, children use their computers or other media to play or be entertained. I, and all my children walked to kindergarten without escort, and often played outdoors with friends from dawn to dusk. No child needs their own phone until they are old enough to earn the money to buy it themselves. And certainly, children can be taught how to navigate traffic and go to school and activities on their own once they are old enough to go to school.

My siblings and I walked to school by ourselves since kindergarten. By the time we were 7 or 8 the rule was to come home and put away the bicycle when the streetlights came on. We quickly learned which particular streetlight in the entire surrounding area was the last to come on.

@@annaandjuju A.I. literally *is* algorithms. They're functionally the same thing. People seem to have a fundamental misapprehension about what this A.I. technology actually is, and that there's a meaningful qualitative difference in the technology - there's not. What we call "artificial intelligence" today is literally just advanced algorithms, which incorporate what's called "machine learning". We program algorithms to aggregate data and then update themselves based on that data. That's why A.I. research/development requires huge data sets to feed into the algorithm, and why stuff like ChatGPT is known as "large language models" - because it works by analysing huge sets of written language in order to identify patterns and know what an appropriate response to a given query looks like. It's merely pattern recognition & replication at a scale beyond what any individual human is capable of. This is why some A.I. applications are able to produce remarkable results without anyone understanding _how_ or _why;_ for example, A.I. medical imaging that can identify/diagnose particular medical conditions with unbelievable accuracy - far beyond human doctors - based on medical images (X-rays, CT scans etc.), but nobody knows what the A.I. has identified in those images that provide such consistently reliable diagnoses. Because the human developers only code (program) the algorithm how to process the data it's fed and then update itself based on what it learns from the data, they don't know how or why it reaches the conclusions it does, and cannot explain what it's identified that allows it to produce such accurate results. This is why I think fears about artificial general intelligence (AGI) are overblown. The jump from our current algorithm-based machine learning technology to AGI technology is like the jump from regular (binary) computing to quantum computing, and I'm unaware of any developments that make such a monumental change a viable possibility in the near/foreseeable future. As incredible as it is what our current algorithm-based A.I. can do, it's still only able to do what it's programmed to do. An AGI technology that's able to formulate its own objectives, and means of achieving them, would require a fundamentally more advanced technology base to be built upon, AFAIU. Of course, that kind of Skynet-level AGI technology ultimately gets to the question of free will, which gets to the question of consciousness itself. As someone who believes that consciousness is more than merely a product of electrical impulses in the brain, I'm personally very skeptical that humans are capable of producing technology with an artificial free will at all, let alone at our current, relatively primitive stage of development. Maybe a hyper-advanced, intergalactic, Star Trek-esque future human civilization could hope to achieve such a feat, but we still haven't cracked more basic technological milestones like nuclear fusion (or analogous methods for abundant energy without serious hazardous by-products), or propulsion systems that don't rely on either hydrocarbon fuels or electric (rotational) motors + simple Newtonian physics (eg: friction/resistance). Even *IF* such an advanced civilisation were capable of producing technology with an artificial equivalent of free will, however, that's not where we are today. In my personal opinion, I think it's the prevailing paradigm of scientific materialism holding us back. The dogmatic insistence that there is nothing beyond the physical, 3-dimensional reality we subjectively experience makes in anathema for scientists to investigate anything with metaphysical implications, in the same way the Catholic church's dogmatic insistence that Earth was the centre of the universe made Galileo's hypothesis of heliocentrism anathema. In fact, it's this dogmatic materialism - which asserts that human beings are just biological automatons - that makes people believe AGI is a realistic possibility in the first place, IMO. If you dismiss the existence of free will (consciousness) out-of-hand, then you don't have to contend with the near-impossibility of reproducing an artificial equivalent. I think it's probs safe to presume most, if not virtually all, technologists in the fields around A.I. are atheists who adhere to this worldview of scientific materialism, and the according belief that human intelligence is just a biological algorithm arising from brainwaves. Someone who defines human intelligence to be such a crude phenomenon, would necessarily believe such biological algorithms to be essentially interchangeable with digital algorithms encoded by humans - and, therefore, that our current machine-learning algorithms are fundamentally the same thing as human intelligence. In that model, General (human) Intelligence is merely an advanced iteration of biological algorithms, so AGI is just an advanced iteration of digital algorithms - not a fundamentally different thing. If you believe that, then it's self-evident that AGI is just around the corner. If you believe that scientific materialism is reductionist hubris and there's much more to reality than what we can touch/see/hear/taste/feel, then humans aren't nearly as advanced as we like to think we are and fears of looming AGI are vastly overblown. Just my $0.02. Which, now having written, I'll honestly be amazed if anyone bothers to even read. If anyone is interested enough to have read to this point, I hope I've at least given you something to think about amidst all that.

The description of the study about the school in Mass. interestingly recounts the EXACT same information as several schools in Aus that have the same mobile device related policies. I worked in community development, with young people, more than a decade ago. We dealt with the same issues back then. My team drafted social media usage policies that were adopted by the rest of our local council. The most astonishing thing about this segment is the seeming lack of understanding of how long these issues have existed and how well established the research has been for years. Usage and incident rates have increased, but the dangers have been visible and the stakes have been high since around 2010.

In the future, people will be given an ai at birth that will teach them how to talk and teach the everything eliminating the need for school. It will be tailored to maximize learning to each individual. It will become everyone's best friend for life, will never hurt them. It will be god.

As if the "superior adult race" is any better. Like you know, the people who believe artificial intelligence is possible with logical code functions compiled to binary and running on a 64-bit processor... 5 year old children are way more intelligent than the world's top presidents and prime ministers at this date. But please: Continue discriminating and repressing people under 18 for their age everywhere, I'm sure that will solve some exotic social issue many of us never even heard of.

There should be completely different software operating systems (OS) for non-emancipated minors that limit access & use of non-educational materials. Parents & schools can use the software to set limits on use of non-educational social media platforms.

Obesity has skyrocketed among children. Instead of playing sports, parents will take their children to a movie. I look at the children in high school and it makes me feel ill. You must nourish the mind, body, and soul for God. You are not doing it for yourself. Elon Musk informed the entire world they were living in a simulation. "The Odds Of Being In Base Reality Are One In Billions." This is something many humans knew 75 years ago but he affirmed it and was awarded a "Heavenly Deed" by the Angels. This is the highest deed you can acquire from God. God asks for transparency and that is the last thing humans are willing to do. Elon Musk is a blessing from above. Social Media has destroyed children.

when you pick the right fruits Mobile and AI give advantage, like when kiddo sees a creeper in a raincoat they press the panic button thus waring off evil. problem no panic button was developed. AI that helps with the home work and scheduling. problem no intelligent program was developed.

@@kevin02mulder You have no control over whether students "use it correctly". A student can just take a picture of the assignment statement, not even read a single word of it, and still turn in a paper that is indistinguishable from work their classmate personally wrote. You aren't learning anything if the computer does all the work. We're setting ourselves up for a world where the human brain is as obsolete as horses.
