Elon named it OPENai for a reason, I believe from 2015 -2017 he wanted to create a version of OpenAI that was for-profit whilst keeping openAi itself non-profit. Similar to how you can take opensource software for free, build on it and then sell it. The difference is when it's non-profit there shouldn't be any evil intent to gain money at the expense of the public and the revenue is just to improve the product for the public. Becoming a for-profit is bad for us as its users and being for profit means they get to hide more to "protect their profits"

For this whole "Elon is shocked that OpenAI is morphing into an actual profit driven company" only makes sense if one of the smartest men in the world somehow thought AI was going to be an amusing little hobby like industry. Did he not believe the Mag 7 were going to go eventually all in on not only entering the space, but dominating it? He must have known that. A non profit company was (is) never going to be able stake a claim in this industry. First, it costs billions of dollars to get established. Tens of billions, more accurately. Who is going to send tens of billions down a rabbit hole "just cuz it's neat" with no chance of getting anything back as a return? What....the satisfaction that "we're stopping the big companies" is supposed to be enough? But, the investment is just a small part of it. The top tier talent isn't going to be attracted by high salaries. No...the game with top tier talent in the tech companies has always been, stock options. That is where the real wealth is. A non profit "let's do it for the cause" isn't going to attract top talent, when the Mag 7's are offering the promise of large pay and stock options. That original vision of non profit (if it was ever real to begin with) would doom the company to a small little hobby company.

Meh, not happy Sam took this to for-profit. But to have Elon of all people throwing a tantrum over that is just... gross. A little rich kid who did no actual work beyond 'I have money' upset that actual creative hardworking people walked away is just kinda pathetic. I think Elon just wants to be in the spotlight all the time. And as much as I used to like him as 'quirky' he's just gone full on mega-villain mode now - and its terrifying that in a few months he'll get to use both the 'infinite money' cheat and the 'full force of the US government' cheat together to do literally whatever he wants. openAI needed the funds to acquire computing. The only way the could do that was getting private funding. Elon Musk stopped funding open AI so they had to go somewhere, micosoft. Thus it became for profit.

Back when I was around 13 or 14, my family was way richer than any other family on our block. My daily allowance was crazy - it was like what other kids would get in a whole month. We started up a soccer team, and since I was paying for everything - the uniforms and the soccer ball - they let me pick the team's name. No surprise there, right? The coach was super tough and would kick out anyone who skipped practice. But me? I got a free pass. Probably because I was the one bankrolling the whole thing with my massive allowance. It was pretty sweet. I was the kid with the cash, so I got special treatment. The other guys had to show up to every single practice, but I could basically do whatever I wanted. My allowance spoke volumes, and everyone listened.

Elon wanted to turn OpenAI into a "for profit company" with him as leader. That was his demand and the reason he left. The only reason he is attacking them now is because they have revolutionised AI and are going from strength to strength. All he has to do is put all his energy into building his own AI rather than trying to slow others down with lawsuits. Grok will jump past OpenAI in no time I imagine, once he focuses his energy.

Well now you have Microsoft controlling it and OpenAI wants to remove the AGI clause in their agreement that will revoke Microsoft access to OpenAI IP once AGI is achieved. Elon, the for-profit company who open sources their patents doesn't sound like a bad owner of OpenAI when you look how deep Microsoft have their fingers in the most revolutionised AI. If it wasn't clear as day how deep Sam Altman has Bill Gates balls down his throat when Sam ran to microsoft after OpenAI fired him and used microsoft to leverege Sam back into OpenAI. It should be clear as day now. OpenAI's own website quote "The Nonprofit’s principal beneficiary is humanity, not OpenAI investors." Wait wait. I have to pay $200/mth. Hasn't Microsoft been investing AND profiting from their profit capped business which hurts OpenAI. Wait.. Doesn't microsoft get equity in OpenAI when it goes for-profit AND gets access rights to their AGI when achieved? Damn... LOL...poor Sam. Jenson said in his last earnings conference call is that one of Nvidia's biggest headaches right now is disappointing the mega clients. Nvidia is selling everything they make, as fast as they can make it. They are almost sold out of their entire expected 2026 chip run (not 2025...2026). These super large companies, used to being given red carpet treatment are being told that they can't get all the critical product they need, as soon as they want it. It's a good product for the King to have. Jenson has to look at the overall relationships, and the size of the business they will be doing with these companies in the future. And, OpenAI (or Microsoft) can't compete with the relationship Elon already has with Nvidia, or the potential size of future business. With Elon, Nvidia gets two companies vying to be major players in AI. But, he also has Tesla's very large demand for Nvidia chips for Tesla's autonomous driving business. And, there is Optimus, which Elon has said will eventually become Tesla's largest revenue stream, actually far exceeding the revenue from the car business. If Jenson has to choose, and right now he actually does have to choose, Elon is probably his most valuable customer. So Altman (even as a "Microsoft company") is probably on the outside looking in when it comes to getting all the chips he thinks he needs.

i find it really strange that people would rather the richest man (in capital ) that wants to make the largest AI and has their hands in all areas of government, is not the same thing as what people are saying about open AI. Money gives him access to more than anyone else. Its almost impossible to know there is anything else other than Elons companies. With so much money, any other company has little hope to compete where money is king and ethics are non existent.

It really boils down to trust. As himself, he can make a comment to his veracity. However, given that he doesn't trust Altman, it makes him fundamentally not trust Open Ai. Whether he is wrong or not is depending upon whether or not Sam is really a liar or not. But this is his motivation, and it's also why he trusts himself with the same technology that he would like to keep out of others' hands. We have to decide whether we believe him or not.
