Last train to London It was 9:29 9:29 back street big city. The sun was going' down There was music all around It felt so right. It was one of those nights One of those nights when you feel the world stop turning You were standing there There was music in the air I should have been away But I knew I'd have to stay. Last train to London Just heading out Last train to London Just leaving town. But I really want tonight to last forever I really wanna be with you. Let the music play on down the line tonight. It was one of those nights One of those nights when you feel the fire is burning Everybody was there Everybody to share It was so right. There you were on your own Looking like you were the only one around I had to be with you Nothing else that I could do I should have been away But I knew I'd have to stay. Last train to London Just heading out Last train to London Just leaving town. But I really want tonight to last forever I really wanna be with you. Let the music play on down the line tonight. Underneath a starry sky Time was still but hours must really have rushed by I didn't realize But love was in your eyes I really should have gone But love went on and on... Last train to London Just heading out Last train to London Just leaving town. But I really want tonight to last forever I really wanna be with you. Let the music play on down the line tonight. But I really want tonight to last forever I really wanna be with you. Let the music play on down the line tonight.

As a landlocked American I had been to very few places, and that fit me fine being the homebody that I am. (Smiling). But I love life's surprises and there I was in my late forties hand in a strap of the last train to downtown London from Heathrow because of my 12 hour layover. First time out of country, first time to England and I just loved every minute of it. Something about the rhythm of the tram or something and this song is the only thing that came to mind. Had no idea what I might do, but I wasn't about to just sit in Heathrow for 12 hours with London just down the line! I was singing this under my breath when this lovely couple turned to me and she asked what I was singing. At her request I began belting this out with all my love for music while chugging down the line toward London. At the conclusion, most of the people in our compartment applauded and some yelled encore! How much fun can life be, and how groovy can people be!!!

I don't think most fans of this song realize how skilled the musicians are on this recording. The "bassline" in the verses is actually two different instruments playing simultaneously: a bass guitar and a keyboard (clavinet). The keyboardist and bassist are both playing that riff absolutely perfectly in sync with one other, which is practically impossible to do - even in the studio (Don't forget, this album was recorded with analog technology, which means they had to get the performance perfect in real life in order for it to be on the recording that way!)
@KENSCCY8234 жыл бұрын

Thanks Jeff! -- you made my day when I was feeling good, and you help me go through a loss right now (I am crying right now. ❤️

I don't think they are underrated. Jeff Lynne has been recognized as one of the best composer and producers in the music industry. He even produced the last Beatles record with McCartney in the late 1990's. Also, given this single video now has 74 million views, I'd say ELO is a cult band in its own right. ;) BTW, I was too young to hear their music at the time but discovered them later on and loved it for the originality and musicality. It became one of my favorite bands and I still listen to their songs a few times a year. :)

It was 9-29, 9-29 back street big city. The sun was going down, there was music all around It felt so right. It was one of those nights, one of those nights when you feel the world stop turnin', you were standing There, there was music in the air. I should have been Away, but I knew I'd have to stay. Last train to London, just headin' out, Last train to London, just leavin' town. But I really want tonight to last forever I really wanna be with you, Let the music play on down the line tonight. It was one of those nights, one of those nights when you feel the fire is burnin', everybody was there, everybody to share It felt so right. There you were on your own, lookin' like you were The only one around, I had to be with you, nothin' else that I could do, I should have been away, but I knew I'd have to stay. Last train to London, just headin' out, Last train to London, just leavin' town. But I really want tonight to last forever I really wanna be with you. Let the music play on down the line tonight. Underneath a starry sky, time was still but hours Must really have rushed by, I didn't realize, But love was in your eyes, I really should have Gone, but love went on and on... Last train to London, just headin' out, Last train to London, just leavin' town. But I really want tonight to last forever I really wanna be with you. Let the music play on down the line tonight.
