Allow me, a Waluigi fan, to explain why i love Waluigi. First of all, I'm throwing what I just said out of the window. Forget I said I'm a Waluigi fan. I'm most likely not like the majority of Waluigi fans at all. My love for Waluigi's character started when I was young. When I was a kid, Wario & Waluigi were my favorite Mario characters. It eventually turned into just Wario, but I still very much liked Waluigi. I always thought Waluigi was really cool. He and Wario were great characters and I came up with many ideas for games featuring the two. But how exactly did I grow to like him as much as I do now? We'll have to look at my childhood for that. Contrary what I said earlier, Yoshi was actually my original favorite Mario character. It was like this for a long time, but it eventually changed. I'd likely pinpoint that time to when I was 6 years old, and I got Super Mario 64 DS. In the game, you start as Yoshi. I was super happy about that... I loved Yoshi. When I eventually unlocked Wario, I wondered... "where is Waluigi?". This started a long mission. A mission to find Waluigi once and for all. For years me, and my friend (let's call him Brad) searched for Waluigi. We looked at all the clues. It started with the stuff we could find... The white door, the purple bunny in the manual... and then it shifted to the internet with the Black Box on the file select. Brad moved away in 3rd Grade, but our search for Waluigi didn't end. We spoke on the phone for hours every now and then, talking about our search for Waluigi. Talking about the internet rumors we found. It brought me to the L is Real 2401 mystery, and so much more. One day I was writing down all the comparisons from the White Door, and Waluigi. Comparing the location of the door, Waluigi's connection to Boos, etc. Not too long afterwards I discovered WwwWario, and his Full Analysis on Waluigi in Mario 64 DS. It opened my eyes. Waluigi wasn't in plain sight. He was hidden behind very complicated and extreme measures. I truly believed that the Arceus2401 mystery was real. I called Brad for the first time in a while, and told him about the video. This sparked our imaginations even more, and the hunt for Waluigi continued. This long trek endured until late 2013. I remember a vacation me and my family went on, where we stayed with some people my dad knew, and me and a kid a few years younger than me continued to look for Waluigi together, and solve L is Real in general. A month or 2 later, WwwWario made a video that explained that the Arceus2401 idea was most likely faked, and Waluigi definitely wasn't in Super Mario 64 DS. I was upset for awhile, and accepted my fate, but looking back at it... it's one of my favorite memories. An experience I probably will never have with any other game. Waluigi symbolized my childhood, and the never-ending mystery and search that brought me and Brad together. I haven't talked to Brad in years, but whenever I think about him, I think about our times trying to crack the code. It was probably around 2014 that I started to really like Waluigi. I was aware of some of the memes about Waluigi, mainly the "Carol of Waa" from BitF's KZbin channel. Despite the memes I had seen, Waluigi wasn't a meme character to me. In my mind, he was a misunderstood, sad, yet cool dude. He was insecure, and always lost. He just wanted to win. I longed for a Waluigi game, and even made a very complicated, likely overly-dark game idea & story for him. I posted that I wanted a Waluigi game to the 2014 E3 community on Miiverse, and someone responded, saying Waluigi was gross and stupid, and didn't deserve a game. With his complaints in mind, I formed the story, and it still exists in my mind to this day. I won't get into the story here, but it explains Waluigi's insecurities... why he feels like everyone is cheating, and it originally explained why he was so skinny and "ugly" (but I have since scrapped that idea). This is about the time that I really started wanting Waluigi representation. I saw him as a genuinely interesting character, and saw that he was the only of the 4 Mario "bros" that hadn't gotten a game yet. Fast Forward to about 2016 or 2017. I started seeing more Waluigi memes. Being a Waluigi fan, I enjoyed them, and found them fairly good. As time went on, I saw more memes, but overall, it didn't really change my view on Waluigi. I still liked him for his character, not for the memes. Back in 2014 when Waluigi was shown as an assist trophy, I was upset, but not too bummed. I never expected him to ever make it into Smash in the first place. Zoom to 2018, around E3, I was a bit upset about all the attention Waluigi was getting from Mario Tennis Aces, because all his attention was mostly memey stuff. But I saw him as genuinely having a chance of making it into Ultimate. He was much more popular than he was around Smash 4, and I had realized his potential as being a representative of the Mario Sports and spin-offs... Utilizing Party Dice, Karts, Tennis & Golf, etc. Then I saw him as an Assist Trophy in Ultimate. Here is exactly what I said when I saw him "Ha ha.... deconfirmed... that's sad." I was laughing because so many people expected him to get in. I saw a chance, but I still never expected him to show up. I was mostly joking around... I didn't realize people were so serious about Waluigi getting into it. The "that's sad" was in reference to myself.... Because of the part of me that wanted to see him in. Then came the storm. Everyone was upset that Waluigi wasn't in. What was originally amusement turned into anger. I learned that most Waluigi fans like him only because of his meme potential, and I feel like a lot of people who started to expect him only wanted him in because they enjoy Waluigi memes. I started to have a tough time finding people who liked Waluigi for who he was, and not for his memes. Now, everything I see about Waluigi is a meme. I rarely see any actual appreciation. Then the whole "harrassment" thing happened. Supposedly it was only 2 people making very offensive jokes, but it led to everyone getting really mad at Waluigi fans. I saw so many people say they hoped Waluigi would never be in Smash because of how terrible they are... I felt so isolated... Of course, Waluigi support continues, and I see memes or jokes about him not getting into Smash Daily. I also see people who think he actually has a chance of getting in as a playable fighter. Let me finish this off by saying... I am ashamed of what Waluigi has become. I love Waluigi as a character. Although I enjoy the memes, they have gotten out of control, and I don't like them anymore. Like most memes, they grow stale to me after I see them everywhere. Although I am trying to respect the mainly meme-loving portion of the Waluigi fanbase, I still love him for who he is, and what impact he has had on my life. Waluigi never wins, he is sad, but he is also cool, confident, and funny. Him and Wario are still my favorite Mario Characters. Although I like Wario more, Waluigi really needs to star in his own game sometime. Waluigi symbolizes my childhood, and is a big part of my memories. Live on Waluigi.

Wow... What an amazing story. I mean, I started as a waluigi fan because of the memes about him, but I realized that I really wanted to see what Nintendo could do with him, the fan game Psycho Waluigi comes to mind as it's a serious waluigi game that stays pretty true to the *real* character, not the one described by memes. While seeing him in smash as a character would be cool, a game where he at least has a major role would be far better in my opinion. And all of the Waluigi for smash demand has stirred up so much drama that I just hate to see. It's kinda ruined me wanting to support the hope of him being in cause of how much bad there is surrounding it. But one day he'll get his time to shine. One day.

By what the manual for Mario Tennis 64 and Charles Martinet says, Waluigi just wanted to fit in, to feel loved, but got the exact opposite, you do notice that he's the only one in the Mario franchise who is picked on for his appearance, clearly seen in Fortune Street. Basically all the hate just fuels the movement even more, just as the Mario universe characters' hatred/distaste for Waluigi fuels his own motivation. The haters don't understand that self pity, being on the receiving end of hatred, and being the underdog are the defining elements of Waluigi's character, so when they make fun of people for being upset that he's not in smash and stuff, that can only vindicate him and his supporters more and more. There's only one way to MAYBE defeat the movement, and that's to stop fighting against it. Otherwise, the hate and subsequently the responding support will just reach critical mass eventually and he will finally get into smash and/or get his own game

Purplepentapus157 Not really.... Any fanbase is hard to kill. There would have to be a game that makes waluigi very unlikable for people to stop liking him. The real fans would like to see more of him in games. The real fans are not really even that out-spoken or toxic. They basically just play as him in the sports games. Kind of like how I play toadette. I play toadette and like her, but that is just it... I'm not crazy or anything. The real fans are not very high in numbers, The meme fans are the ones that have the biggest numbers. They are meme fans, of course they would have a lot of toxic people there. The ones that give The bad connotations. The harassers and the people begging really hard are the meme fans. Some meme fans just like the memes and started to like waluigi because of the memes, which isn't bad. The meme fans that are toxic little kids are the bad ones. The people that ruin memes or jump off the bandwagon after the meme dies. Once/if the meme dies, the waluigi fanbase would lose a lot of support. Even thought I think that is a good thing because those are fake fans. The haters are either people sick of people not accepting waluigi as an assist trophy, or people that always hated him since he wasn't created to be very likable anyways. The haters are the ones unchanged by the memes and always had this opinion of Waluigi. In my time of seeing the haters of people talking about waluigi due to smash, the hate usually only begins when a fan won't accept waluigi as an assist trophy. The hater would try to tell them to just stop thinking that sakurai is a "god" and he is only human. Sakurai can't develop a character a character in that short time. Also, waluigi or not, the game would still sell for $60 and would not affect the income since if you're a smash fan.... you will buy smash no matter if it had waluigi or not. If you are not a smash fan.... you wouldn't care that waluigi isn't in the game. Waluigi really wouldn't affect the game sales. Even the people that said they would boycott are really just missing out and are not a big number of people. Adding waluigi would be more work for Sakurai and the development team for no extra pay. This is why Waluigi will be dlc if he ever gets added. Japanese fans are already calling Ridley "Captain America".... and at least Ridley is a likable villain... if they added Waluigi.... the Japanese fans would really begin complaining. They are silent now, but add waluigi for no reason and they will not be happy. Memes didn't affect japan, so they really don't care about him. This makes me to believe that the situation of waluigi would be decided by another smash ballot. Sakurai will want to see who is the most requested character after release. If he wins, he will be added as dlc. If waluigi loses, he may be added in smash 6. Dlc is really his only fate since developers get payed extra for dlc. (Dlc for them is basically like overtime pay in a real job.) To conclude my statement, Waluigi does not look like he has a good shot at being in smash ultimate at all. People really like to call him the underdog, which.... he is at this point. He has one shot, and that is dlc. He also is an assist trophy which gives him an even bigger handicap to get through. The true fans will still like to play as him like they do in mario sports games. The meme fans will still be the ones causing tons of controversy and most likely leave when waluigi memes will die. Waluigi may or may not get a game. Only time will tell his fate. My stance on waluigi is neutral. I always never cared about him, he is one of those characters that I ignore. I side with the facts and the facts lead me to state that waluigi only has a shot at dlc. People do hope that he will be in the game at launch since sakurai done crazy things before, but the facts don't support this idea since sakurai's paycheck is not based on if waluigi gets in or not. Tbh, Goku would make sakurai's paycheck double if he wanted tons more money. (I mention goku since many other fans would buy just for goku. Goku shouldn't be in smash since it is a celebration of videogames... but this would be the case if sakurai was only thinking about his paycheck... which I believe sakurai has lots of dignity and respect for the franchise of smash. He simply doesn't do this for the money... he does this for us.) Waluigi won't die, he just might get unpopular again..... but don't stop liking anyone because others stop. Like who you want and at the end of the day... nintendo is still the franchise we love and we are all eager to play nintendo's new games.

Just before SSBU is released, a video will be posted on Nintendo’s KZbin page. The thumbnail will be a black background, with a purple flame. The title of the video will be called, “Stealing the spotlight” The video will begin with a normal game of Smash Bros, but it will be animated, Mario, Luigi, and Wario will all be fighting. Mario and Luigi will team up after Wario taunts them. Wario, after being almost knocked off of the stage, watches as the brothers walk towards him, ready to knock him out of the stage. Then, all of a sudden, an assist trophy will fall from the sky. Wario will reach for the assist trophy, only to be stopped Mario. Luigi grabs the assist trophy and releases the character. Waluigi pops out, begrudgingly ready to fight. He then looks around and sees Wario, on the ground, laughing, as are Mario and Luigi. Waluigi begins to feel hopeless, as he feels as if he’ll never get his chance. But then, a spark. Waluigi looks up at the laughing brothers. They look at Wario and point, signifying what they want Waluigi to do. Waluigi looks at Wario, then back at the brothers. He does this three times, and walks over the the brothers, with an angry expression on his face. His hand grips his tennis racket, and clenches his grip. Mario is still laughing, but Luigi is slightly concerned. Waluigi pulls back in a quick and fluid motion, and swings at Mario. Mario, caught off guard, is sent flying off the stage. Wario and Luigi watch as Waluigi stands alone. Waluigi turns, and with a tennis ball in hand, throws it in the air, and rockets it towards the screen. *Waluigi steals the spotlight!*

I still remember playing Mario Kart for the Wii for the first time ever, it was one of my first Nintendo games ever and I chose Waluigi simply because everyone in my family said “Ew, he looks gross.” I also remember when my friend said “Waluigi is the worst character ever man, why do you pick him.” I picked Waluigi to prove them wrong, to show any character could be viable. Mario power tennis. That's why I love waluigi. As a kid the beginning of the game, the animation, was my favorite thing ever. He's not just a meme... The fact he drew over Luigi's face (before then my favorite character) because he was jealous that mario and luigi got in the tournament but him and wario didn't. Every fanbase has toxicity. Don't blame bad parts of the internet on waluigi fans. The fact that he hates everyone including himself makes me love him more.

I've always loved Waluigi since I was a little kid (around when Mario Party 6 came along) and your closing statements are exactly WHY I love him. I was always the loser growing up, I didn't have many friends, I wasn't great at socializing. Even today despite having much more friends than I ever thought I could, I still have plenty of trouble reading social cues. I saw myself in Waluigi growing up, despite him being a "villain" I always got the sense that he wanted something more. I latched onto that, and oddly enough, as I grew up and started to get accepted more and more by my peers, Waluigi's popularity was also beginning to skyrocket. It felt like we were finally getting what we always wanted: acceptance and understanding. Waluigi isn't just a meme for me, he was someone my little mind could look up to growing up in a world that just wasn't built for me. I'm always gonna be a Waluigi fan, no matter what Nintendo does with him. I really hope someone over there recognizes what Waluigi means to people like me: the losers, the weirdos, the underdogs. I'm gonna stop before I end up writing an essay, but thank you for shedding some much needed light on why Waluigi is Nintendo's greatest underdog
