Elton John was the biggest selling artist of the 70s, so yeah, lots of great songs before I'm Still Standing (1983). Your Song, Levon, Honky Cat, Tiny Dancer, Rocket Man, Crocodile Rock, Daniel, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Bennie and the Jets, Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me, Philadelphia Freedom, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, The Bitch Is Back, Pinball Wizard, Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word and so many more just in the 70s.

Mike I Tiny Dancer, Levon, Take Me to the Pilot, Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters, My Father’s Gun, Border Song, Son of Your Father, Honky Cat, Mellow, Can I Put You On, Amoreena, Honey Roll, Texan Love Song, Crocodile Rock. I could quadruple that list & there’d still be a ton of bangers he won’t have heard. Elton was prolific. He released ‘Don’t Shoot me I’m Only the Piano Player’ & ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ (a double album) all within 9 months of each other. And he also played 100 live shows that year. He released 14 albums between 1970 & 1980, not including a soundtrack for the movie, ‘Friends,’ which has a couple of my favorite Elton John songs (Honey Roll & Can I Put You On).

Elton cleaned up from drugs and alcohol in 1989. I'm Still Standing was one of two standout hits from the 1983 album Two Low for Zero (the other being I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues), which was a fine album, something of a return to form, after decline since 1976.

Bernie Taupin was the lyricist.....he would give Elton the lyrics and he would write the melody in 20 minutes. The drummer, guitarist and bass player would tell Elton to leave and they would add the background harmonies. The whole album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is fantastic.

More Elton John please! Elton John/Believe. Elton has had so many hits, you would be hard pressed to exaust the list any time in the near future, and then there are his deep album cuts which totally rival his hits! Examples - Have Mercy On The Criminal, Blues For Baby And Me, The King Must Die, Come Down In Time, Ticking, Sails and many, many more. You have absolutely no idea what you are NOT hearing by missing out on these totally excellent songs! So sad you have not yet heard them!

Please... react to a song from the same album, the opening track: "Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding". Just listen to the original studio recording... put your headphones on... close your eyes... and enjoy the ride!!! You WON'T be disappointed. It's Elton's opus.. a true rock and roll masterpiece. Also, this is the early part of Elton's career before his surgery to remove polyps from his vocal cords which changed his voice forever. He can't hit those high notes anymore... such a shame.

There actually isn't any organ on this recording. The instruments are Piano (played by Elton, of course), Electric Guitar (Davey Johnstone), Bass (Dee Murray), Drums (Nigel Olsson), and a string section (arranged by Del Newman). It's easy to confuse Del's arrangements for keyboard parts since they sound so much like keyboard parts, but rest assured they are in fact live string players. For other suggestions, I'd like to put forward "Someone Saved My Life Tonight", "Philadelphia Freedom", and "Bennie and the Jets" for singles, and "Sixty Years On" and his live 1986 version of "Burn Down the Mission" for album tracks.

Now you should hear the original stereo studio version of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton. The video you reviewed is cut and does not play the entire song. This entire double album is fire and made Elton John a superstar. Two other hits from this album is Bennie & The Jets and Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting. Also the original version of Candle In The Wind which he hit #1 in the 80's with live in Australia.

I decided to just go back myself and copy them to save you time. Here’s a copy of the post I the songs listed: OK, Chaud...This is Helene. There are two kinds of EJ songs....at least to me...bright, poppy songs (Bennie and the Jets, Saturday Nights Are Right for Fightin’ etc.) and I will let other subs who like them suggest them to you. I think you like the deeper, more serious songs, so here is a list of nine songs that I think are representative of that side of Elton: beautiful lyrics, gorgeous and lush “wall of sound”, wonderful piano playing, great melodic lines. This is in no particular order of quality....just as I thought of them: 1) Tiny Dancer (became of HUGE song of the seventies, and was a key moment in the movie Almost Famous....which, if have not watched it, you should. A wonderful movie about the 1970’s music scene and based on a true story) 2)Candle in the Wind (sung about Marilyn Monroe. Elton was invited to sing it at Princess Diana’s funeral, which he did, changing a few words...that’s how powerful a song it is) 3)Daniel 4) Levon 5) Your Song 6)Burnin’ Down the Mission 7)Madman Across the Water 8) Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me (to me, one of his most beautiful and powerful songs 9) Mona Lisa and. Mad Hatters (another poignant, beautiful song about the New York City underground nightlife scene in the 70’s). You cannot go wrong with any of these songs.....or anything off of Captain Fantastic or Boodbye Yellow Brick Road albums...

Just so you know, the audio to this vid is the studio recording. The lip-syncing is immaculate; but even if the band recreated the album track note for note (and they _were_ a crack band, and faithful to originals), in those days you just couldn't get that kind of perfect mix on a live gig. It's also possible that they performed a real, live version, and the video replaced the live audio with the track. But in that case you'd likely catch their lips being out of sync, at least sometimes. Because of the perfect sync, I'm pretty sure they were lip-syncing - in which case the audience also heard the track we're hearing.
