Elton John is a true music legend. I was born in 1960 and it was a drag when the Beatles broke up, but then Elton John came on the scene and was a new phenomenon - like the Beatles. Very prolific and great albums where every song on his band's Albums was great - Elton and his band, Bernie Taupin - created music history. When I hear his songs, they are still as fresh as they were during the time they were made!

No one initially. Elton writes chords down on the lyrics often, with any other notes to himself, to recall the basic chord progression. Then teaches the song to the band (or they learn it as he demos it). Eventually, music transcribers will make transcriptions from the recorded music, which becomes the notation of it. This is what is archived, and what an orchestra would use, or what even ends up in songbooks. Also often times when Elton's composing someone is recording it, so he can hear it later to recall what he wrote. But most of what these guys do is built around chord sequences. But Elton doesn't "write" his music on staff paper. Arrangers like Buckmaster would, though, since they are preparing scores for other musicians to play.

My sister and I saw him in MI about the time Lion King came out, and we left while he was singing Your Song to beat the crowd. The concert had been delayed over an hour due to a traffic jam, and EJ refused to start until everyone was seated. He played an awesome 3 hours, and Cooper did a set that was mind boggling. When we left we realized we had actually parked where his bus was, and while we were getting to our car after buying a few things, we heard the crowd thundering, knowing he was done. We raced to the car...only to see EJ and the crew out there racing to the bus. He had a whilte suit and top hat on, and my sister yelled ELTON!! He stopped at tipped his hat at us. Such graciousness in that man.

When I first heard of HIV in the 80s, and it seemed to be striking down many in the gay community, I several times had tears in my eyes thinking we would lose Elton too. As the years passed by I realized finally that he was safe. What a sweet relief. What a beautiful person. Thanks to everything and anything that kept him safe, so that he had his chance to grow up, get sober, and have this good life now.

A top 40 hit every year for 30 years, not 29. I know, 1970 plus 29 equals the year 1999. But that leaves out the year 1970 itself, when Elton had his first hit.

I often wonder who “writes” the music ( and by that I mean, who puts the dots on the manuscript paper, for the musicians to play ?) I know the Dudgeons and Buckmasters of the industry do the arranging so it’s maybe they who write the music.
