I first heard this song on the radio one night in Nigeria many years back and it has stuck in my head since . I keep coming back here to listen to this great tune. Elton John, LEGEND!

One of his most overlooked songs. When he wanted to make fun songs, man were they fun.

This song has a Rolling stone vibe to me. The cd overall is fantastic. I'm wondering if it wasn't more popular due to a lion king backlash.

I don’t think Elton John has done a song that rocked this hard since “Rock of the Westies” in 1975!

Oh, wow! I didn't know that was the origin of the song. My interpretation was that the speaker is the Devil! I used to think that the music didn't match the lyrics, but I now I think the opposite. The Devil would use the jaunty music to MOCK the listener. The only thing that I don't like that when Bernie says pain has around for "1,994 years". Only since the birth of Christ? That doesn't really work on any level.

Always reminds me of Duran Duran. hungry like the wolf. Not saying elton robbed it, but it sounds a bit similar.

@@oliverfresh5742 def does at the beginning to me, "what is your name my name is pain"... and "darken the city night is a wire." give it a listen.
