A powerful moment, Lindsey, in that 'Twilight Zone' episode - but NOT the same. In that TV show, the word 'damned' was not used as an expletive or a curse word, but for it's literal meaning. I'm not sure if that TZ episode matches the impact of 'Frankly Scarlet, I don't give a damn.' at the end of 'Gone With the Wind.' (Still probably the most successful movie of all time, IF ticket sales are counted, and not dollars. Using box office revenues to compare movies from different eras is meaningless, since the spending power of each dollar changes, along with ticket prices!)

I listened to this song for the first time when I was 3. I had no idea how adult parts of this song are until now, but it was instantly one of my favorites as a young girl. "You're a butterfly, and butterflies are free to fly. Fly away, high away, bye bye" was always my favorite part. Now I'm 13, and I just listened to this song for the first time in 6 years and I'm bawling. I'm getting so much nostalgia, and I just love this song. Truly a work of art.

Between that and Elton's great delivery. His band, the three that stayed with him forever. They are the same ones that Elton trusted to put the final touches on his songs and do the backing vocals. This song reminds me of my brave, extraordinary dad. He saved me from my VERY abusive mom during their divorce. He put me on an airplane & flew me straight to him. I was 16 years old & when I arrived, he'd set up his spare room with a double bed, side table & little lamp. He'd picked out a mauve pink comforter, table skirt & lamp, & a little teddy bear. I only brought some clothes & left EVERYTHING else behind. But I was FREE. I will never forget the feeling I had that day. I'm 48 years old now & still have PTSD from my mom's trauma. My dad passed away 3 years ago. Abusive mom is still alive, been no contact most of my life. Rest in peace my sweet daddy. You're my hero. I love you & I miss you always. ❤💫💔

Chesterette Yes. Just as He does for everyone...but it's quiet (usually) voice inside of me...not like someone speaking. And it differs from my own thoughts. It does take being quiet and listening. It's hard to explain, sorry. It is different and usually when in prayer when I am still and quiet and have asked Him to communicate with me. It doesn't always happen a certain way....no tricks to teach you. Just connect with him and listen. You too will be able to tell the difference in your own thoughts and the Word. And nothing feels better than the Holy Spirit moving through and in you! God bless.

Loren, I don't know you, but the pain you're in is written in your words. I'm sorry you are unhappy. I have been an Elton John groupie since 1970 when I first heard his music. Whatever you're feeling, there is an EJ song that covers it. You may not know, but EJ only wrote lyrics to one song, and that song is Your Song. The rest of all his entire music library, his lyricist is Bernie Taupin, as gifted a writer of words as EJ is a writer of the music. This world can be harsh, yes. But, it is also a beautiful and kind world when you look for it. Don't stop looking Loren.

Ronald Fulton Thank you for the kind words...proof that there is compassion in the world, even if from a total stranger. I did know those facts about Elton and Bernie. Even as a young child I learned all I could about the songs and the talented men behind the music and lyrics. Their songs are interwoven into my own life story. It's amazing how much a part of my life is reflected in his songs. It does take much effort for me to find reasons to go on. And yes, there is much beauty in the world and some of its people. Thanks again. Your kindness has made a difference a just the right time for me.

I remember an interview with Elton John about his songwriting process - it might even be on KZbin. He said, "When in doubt, write a hymn." And if you listen to his music of the 70s there's a lot of English hymnal style in it. The opening of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is the most obvious example, but he chose this song to illustrate his point. And he demonstrated how he harmonized his piano bass chords to "give it weight and drama" and build anticipation. Here was a guy in absolute command of his craft even when he was cranking out one hit after another. He's a legend for a reason.

Elton John is such an amazing artist. Each one of his songs tells a story in the most detailed of ways. This song, his earlier life, almost falling for a woman who was about to lock him into her grip for life. And that life being one filled with misery. From the catch, to the sweet release of a life that would of ended in his demise. Stunning lyrics along with the music makes this song one of Sir Elton's instant classics.

I've always liked Elton John , and when he was Knighted by the Queen of England I inwardly rejoiced for this man , and I'm as straight as a man can be, and also as bold as I know , and can say thank you Elton John for using you gift. The world is a better place for it.

escaped what would have been a really bad marriage. The way you and bernie Expressed this life experience Through music and words is Amazing. I was 8 years old When this song came out and I loved it and listened to it a billion Times but never really knew the meaning of the song until later in life. It was like rediscovering it all over again.

This song is amazing and tells the poignant story of how Elton had serious doubts about a marriage to his then girlfriend and at the same time was put under immense pressure by record producers, making him contemplate suicide....Sugar Bear is a man named Long John Baldry who 'saved Elton's life' by convincing Elton he didn't have to get married and to instead carry on with his music! In a lot of ways this song has saved people's lives! Go Elton!

+James Fahrenheit If my sources are correct and I'm pretty sure they are, he wrote this song for CHER! It's about her not Long Dong Silver or whomever you thought.
@44Liriodendron9 жыл бұрын
+SZ III yea, this song was about him being pressured to get married by his record company and his beard aka girlfriend at the time in order to preserve his music career and his friends he references helped him understand that his 2 options of marriage or suicide were not his only options.

These lyrics are so superb! I am so used to singing along to this; and of course, like everyone, I have my own memories of hearing this song that I've forgotten to truly appreciate the words that make this song a classic. It's got atmosphere. It's poetry. Taupin is a wordsmith.

+gumbeet And yet though I'm a straight female, the lyrics resonate with me. If you've never felt trapped in some way by some circumstance, and then rejoiced to be free, you either don't know yourself or you're lying to yourself, dude

+AeroDoe Humbert doesn't get that lyrics can have different meanings to different people. He assumes that the artists personal intent is paramount. I've never seen music this way.

I'd say your the sexually unsure one you squeaker. You seem kind of fixated on the subject. We just said the lyrics were superb, your the one talking about gay men lol. Maybe see someone about that. Talk about your demons, man.

This song is amazing. It tells such a story of life, a life maybe a bit like mine . Amazing how when we're growing up we can be so influenced by our surroundings. So many are 'roped and tied' , tied down now and then by choice or by fate. I think i have many moments thru the years where i just disconnect from reality involuntarily, because of the many things i was tied to. But i too flew away - something or someone also saved my life. thank god i did not walk head on to the deep end of the river

well, everytime I see clips of his live performances he often talks the lyrics, alters the tempo and key so that he doesn't have to attempt any high notes. so, I very much doubt he is as good as he was even 10 years ago.
