I believe Bernie Taupin, the lyricist, wrote this song about his first wife, Maxine Feibelmann, who was actually a seamstress for Elton's band. Much of the rest of the song is made up of vignettes of street and concert life the band encountered while touring in America.

@@JH-rp3lj I work in the movie industry and many years ago we were doing a music video for The Lion King. We had several hours of setup before Elton was to appear but to our surprise, he showed up about two hours early. He didn't say anything to anyone, he just sat down at the piano and started playing. He wasn't rehearsing. He didn't play any of his many hits. He played golden oldies from his and our youth. J ust for us. Just for the crew, to give us a little smile while doing our hard work.

Elton has a countless amount of hits and was the best selling artist of the ‘70s and is one of the best selling artists of all time. He’s an international icon and is regarded as one of the best rock/pop pianists of all time and had a top 40 hit every year for over 30 consecutive years. He is 74 years old and will soon resume his farewell tour. I can understand the Phil Colins comparison because Elton did the soundtrack for “The Lion King” (which won him an Oscar), and Phil Colins did the “Tarzan” one. I also suggest watching Elton’s movie “Rocketman” (which also got him an Oscar). Try reacting to the song “Rocket Man” next just for starters. Great reaction video 👍

You could ask Elton John what's the meaning of this song and he will tell you, I don't know the meaning. He said in an interview that typically when Bernie hands him lyrics that he just wrote, there is no discussion about them. Elton receives them and writes music to them. He doesn't call Bernie and ask him what does this song mean? He reads the lyrics and gets the gist of the song but if there is any hidden meaning, he has no clue unless it's an obvious love song, Like Love Song or a song like Crocodile Rock which has simple lyrics. I find that to be quite interesting

Bernie Taupin wrote almost all Elton’s lyrics. It was the greatest collaboration in popular music history. “Someone Saved My Life Tonight”, “Funereal For a Friend”, “Levon”, etc., etc. Captain Fantastic, Madman Across the Water, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, etc, etc. Every song phenomenal. Elton’s vocals are so good it’s easy to overlook the fact that he is a piano- playing MFer, just as much emotion and feel in his playing as his voice. His melodies, progressions, arrangements are absolutely musical genius.

Elton John was a king of piano rock in the 70s. Many hits. You picked a good one to start with. I'd say, for me, the song that really established him as a star early on was Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. I've read that Bennie and the Jets, another early Elton hit, was the song that inspired Axl Rose to become a rocker. Daniel, Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me, Philadelphia Freedom, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Your Song, and many more. All are soft rock. He played at Princess Diana's funeral.

I'm so glad to hear you will dive into Elton. Yeah, he had a couple of hits. 😆 The dude is a legend. I had an older sister who had 700 pictures of him plastered on her side of the bedroom wall. I got to see him in concert about 15 times. It was more like a family tradition than going to a concert. He literally ruled the 70s, had a lull in the 80s except for I'm Still Standing and then came back in the 90s and bitch slapped the doubters with the Lion King soundtrack and a killer tour with another vocal and piano legend, Billy Joel. If you want quintessential EJ tho, dive into the 70s. Madman Across the Water, Rocket Man, The King Must Die, Burn Down the Mission, and the masterpiece Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding. You wouldn't even be scratching the surface, but it's a start.

That was later in life.....he's been in my world since I was a young teen. Also that is SIR Elton. He was knighted. Another artist who was heavily into drugs and almost killed himself. He met a young boy who contracted Aids through a blood transfusion and befriended the family. After the young man died Elton thought "WTF am I doing with my life?"
