Everything about this is so cool and heartwarming somehow. A roller coaster that most people could outrun, has been around for over a century and yet still manages to thrill and surprise its riders. Must be a cool one to operate as well, not a lot of roller coasters let you literally push the cars along the track. And the amount of care that has gone into keeping it running more or less exactly as it did in 1902 is just wonderful. Don't know if the fates will ever take me to Altoona, PA but I'd love to ride this one day. It's literally history.

Hello all. I was one of the 2020 operators of LTD and featured in this video.. As of 2020, red car #6 is the better ride. A bit faster and tracks very straight. Blue #8 had an issue with binding up on left turns so it would lose considerable speed. Those are the only two operational cars as of now. Plans moving forward are to bring the remaining 5 restored cars back to usable condition one per year over the next several years. Car #1 is in the glass case in the station, and will never be used again. To clarify, PA state regulations prevent us from operating more than 1 car on the track due to the primitive controls.

I never expected the oldest coaster in the world to be part of an analysis video~ I agree, roller coasters are a classic that is definitely timeless, especially those that are of the age of Leap the Dips, and even the classic coasters after it, especially until the 1990s. Parks who are able to keep close to 100 year old wood coasters, like Leap the Dips and the Coney Island Cyclone, running are true legends. I can't imagine the around the clock maintenance that has to be done to these old classics to keep them operating and safe to match with the current standards of organizations, such as IAAPA and NAARSO. It's all about dedication of the park's maintenance team, and I think this video shows just how important maintenance is for both old and modern coasters in terms of technology and strutural strength. Kudos to Lakemont Park for proactively maintaining the ride, and their dedication to ensuring that the ride is still safe today~

I remember the first time I went to Lakeomont Park in the late 80's and Leap The Dips was fenced off, it meant nothing to me. Then as a 16 year old I drove a bunch of friends there and no kidding - ride all day cost $2. It's not an impressive park but they had several flat rides and another coaster called the Skyliner which is not bad at all. Then in the early 2000's my future wife and I had become enthusiasts and riding the oldest operating coaster in the world was very exciting .. we ended up stuck on the lift hill which only made it that much more special. I never knew until this video that there were days where you could have air time, my ride was slow and dull. As soon as covid is passed I'm going back... great video - thank you

So nice to see a shoutout to Vuoristorata (literally, "roller coaster") in Linnanmäki. It's my "home park". Vuoristorata is a relative youngster compared to Leap The Dips, and I believe it was very old tech when it was build in early 1950s as a "temporary structure". The combustion engine, electric motor, and steam engine all existed in some for at this time, but I have no idea which one would have been the most practical at this ride's creation. I was so excited you mentioned the scenic railway in Melbourne, I'm so proud to have been on such an old coaster!

for whatever reason, there was sort of a "golden rule" back in the day that the ledgers all had to be 9ft apart, and they didnt have all of the technology and information to measure g forces and calculate what areas would have higher and lower stress, so that why there is all of that inconsistent track bouncing

The Spanish City. In a seaside town up the North of the UK. Anyway I remember being around. 6 or 7 and bagging a ride on the Leap the dip,s. It was taken down in the early 70s. For years I tried looking it up on utube, so to see this It's s joy. Thanks for the post!

Melbournes my town, and I’ve been on the Luna Park coaster on a school trip years ago. My friend challenged me to go on every ride in the park, finishing with the Scenic. Poor guy was sick after that one! Not much speed, but the car dances around in the corners and the whole track assembly shakes as you pull up from the dips.

My first job was at Lakemont as a kid, I really appreciate that you reviewed this coaster! I love to watch your videos after riding new rollercoasters 😁 👍

Not gonna lie, the lady during the description of the ride lay out and bumps. Had a beautiful chest, that is a lucky man. And it looks like they had a blast :)

I grew up in Altoona and every weekend we were at Lakemont Park to ride this coaster. One of the best memories as a child.

Haha I grew up in hollidaysburg pa. My grandparents and my mom grew up in lake mont. I can still hear the train whistle. Ryan - doubt you will see this but thank you for showing a positive light on this park, even with the hardships. Thank you sir.

Great video. 👍🏿 (30:05) Though the cost was $15k to build the ride in 1902 , if you calculate for inflation, that cost would be roughly $275k in 1996.

I road Leap the dips a few years ago, definitely not thrilling like a modern coaster but it's so fun. My husband and I giggled the whole time, and I'm so happy to have ridden something so historic.

I ❤️ The Cyclone! I want to try the Leap the Dips. I’m a fan of wooden coasters. I also like the old scenic railways and cog, narrow gauge railroads.

Thank you for doing the research to explain this coaster. I live in Pittsburgh and plan on going to Lakemont park this year to try it out!

5:06 IS THAT WHY WE CALL IT ACHTERBAHN IN GERMAN???? (translates to 8er-train) i never considered the “achter” would actually refer to an acht (8) its like the ray ban sunglasses thing (named that bc they ban rays) oh and i guess bahn can also be translated to lane or track so 8-track yea theres stuff happening in my brain now reconnecting things

One of the few new credits I got this year, immediately fell in love with the quirky and sketchy feeling. The wheels literally come off the track. Best coaster in the park
