The improvement over a one year old i7-9750 and RTX 2060 doesn't seem to be that big considering the big price increase. At this point, I think it would be better to buy a gaming laptop from last year for a discount if you really need one. Otherwise, wait for the Ryzen 5000 + RX 6000 laptops to come out.

Or for 1249, you can get the RP-17 from eluktronics with the 17" 144hz panel, ryzen 7 4800h, rtx 2060, 16gb ram, and 512gb nvme ssd. It's faster than any intel laptop anyways except In a couple games, but for production it blows intel out of the water.

Hi, I just saw your video and watched it. Can you share your bios version? I have the same laptop, but I dont have some of the settings on bios, such as Q fey function, f1-f12 mode section. Something like this really makes me consider a 17" laptop. I'm using it as a desktop replacement with a monitor anyways, I got the 15.6 for travel but it seems like you're getting extra screen in a similar weight package. Really a fan of the build quality from the eluktronics laptops.

@@Icy-Ryy i would say build quality is pretty similar. The Razer feels a bit denser, probably because its made of aluminum but both are solid. The Razer does bring some nice air through the keyboard. I recall the WASD keys being nice and cool. The webcam position is much better on the Razer of course and now they have a full size SD Card on the Advanced model. I believe its UHS II so is nice and fast. Key lighting is better on the Razer , and now they have the secondary function keys lit up . Speakers are good on both. Big advantage of the max 17 is the BIOS. Higher power limits means better CPU performance. In fact its one of the fastest Intel chips out there. The Mech 15 G3 uses the same limits and would be my choice out of the three. The BIOS also allows for undervolting to help with thermals and help maintain CPU performance. The ability to switch between IGPU and dGPU is a big plus. My editing software makes use of quicksync so hybrid mode works great, yet OBS streamlabs has issues doing a display capture unless its in dGPU mode. So having the option is nice. Finally is support. Neither Razer or Eluktronics make these. So getting something fixed is an issue - the benefit of Eluktronics is that they are small. You should watch my video where I interview the CEO and show their plant. They have good support and in all likelihood if something breaks i think they would just send you a replacement.

Great, thorough review. I will admit that this machine is tempting, especially at the sale price now on Amazon. This is a quality machine at a really good price. If I needed a new machine now I would be all over this. For now, I'm going to wait until this time next year before upgrading.

I thought I saw something about a WiFi card/driver issue. I think if you uninstall and reinstall the driver for that, and/or try to update the BIOS from the Maingear website it may help. Browse reddit.

@@SliderFury1 When I first got it there was definitely an issue with the Wifi driver, I was getting really really slow speeds. I updated the driver and it was fine. But I will try uninstalling and installing fresh. As for BIOS, the Maingear support page does not offer a BIOS update for this 2020 model at all. Hope they come out with one soon. This is a great laptop that could be amazing with a few of these small issues fixed up with software!

Been using my MAX-17 Covert Gamer for over 5 months now, i7-10875H, 64GB RAM, 2070 Super Max-P, 2933Mhz RAM (actually I received 3200Mhz memory, but BIOS shows its set to 2933Mhz currently from factory), 1TB NVMe HD, Upgrade paste to LM at factory, and all tests done with MSHybrid (dGPU would provide error in 3DMark Benchmarks), Beast Mode with Fan Boost: Firestrike: www.3dmark.com/fs/22830858 Time Spy: www.3dmark.com/spy/12383503 Port Royal: www.3dmark.com/3dm/47533988? Sky Diver: www.3dmark.com/sd/5950243 BIOS is currently N.1.06, date of May 19, 2020, and has all the PL limits changes as per HWiNFO64, but not sure if this is the latest or there is a newer one coming out, as I kept the stock undervolt of -0.70 during these tests, and did try -0.80, but my system did lock up a couple of times during -0.80 undervolt via BIOS, so went back to -0.70, and never had an issue yet. I have been an Dell/MSI/ASUS laptop customer for a while and in the IT world for a long time, but after a lot of research (a lot of Reddit reviews of old and new Max-17's), time, and effort, and the videos by Bob of All Trades, OWNorDisown, and Jarrod's Tech, I was convinced that Eluktronics MAX-17 would satisfy my needs from my IT professional side (needed that numpad for spreadsheets and financials on laptop keyboard), to video editing and conversion, and of course gaming. Originally I was going to go with the no logo top for a nice clean finish, but chose to have the dbrand Eluktronics logo skin put on at factory, which BTW looks very sharp, but also when somebody asks who makes that laptop, I can proudly say who the company is, and why I chose them. Pros: - Thunderbolt 3 - Have it hooked up to a TDBT Dual Mode Dock, so I can attach all my peripherals, including Displayport monitor (supports dual Displayport monitors), SD card reader, etc. - HDMI Port for other HDMI monitor for stats and graphs mostly - 240hz IPS Panel - 17 inch, that was slightly bigger than my older 15 inch MSI laptop, but fits in my 15 inch carrying case and bag - 91Whr Battery (although there was room that they could engineer probably a 99.9Whr battery like the MSI GS66 with the space to the left of the battery when upside down) Cons: - 720p Nosecam - As per most reviewers, the webcam needs to be put at the top of the laptop display, upgraded to at least 1080p, and add a privacy cover. I use a very thin stick on privacy cover called Spy-Fy Spyslide Privacy Webcam Cover (came in a pack of 3), that I put on all my laptops, and it works fantastic. Eluktronics should consider partnering and providing these webcam covers for all of their laptops. - Not sure if this is a bug or not, but watching KZbin videos, the video and audio slowly fall out of sync. Looking into this further, as all audio and THX audio drivers were installed in the correct order as per Eluktronics website. (Fixed this by turning OFF "Fast Boot" under Power Options in Windows 10, have NOT turned it off in BIOS yet as per forums.tomshardware.com/threads/video-slowly-loses-sync-with-audio.3302799/page-2?view=date ) (Actually this turning "Fast Boot" off did not fix this, but rather than using the THX Spatial Audio drivers, I chose to use the Realtek Speaker Drivers, and the audio and video stay in sync now, so the THX Spatial Audio drivers need an update) What BIOS version do you have in your MAX-17 Covert Gamer Laptop OWNorDisown?

Thanks for posting such a comprehensive review and mentioning about the audio sync. I didn't have that issue but I did , on occasion, have to keep opening up the THX audio software to get the speakers to work. If I had the Realtek as the sound device it would be fine, but when THX was selected there was nothing unless I opened up the software. My BIOS is N.1.10. I reached out to the CEO before testing to see what the latest BIOS was and if there were any performance related fixes he said it was mainly stability issues so he didn't send me the latest BIOS.

@@OWNORDISOWN It's too bad that Eluktronics has chosen not to allow the newer BIOS updates to be downloadable, as there is no current update available on their support drivers web page (even the version you are currently at). As the bigger players offered driver and firmware updates regularily, this is unfortunately a negative against Eluktronics to not provide their customers these updates to allow them to get the most out of their laptops. **UPDATE** Had to contact customer support, who does a Teamviewer remote control with you, to upgrade your BIOS and EC. Mine is now at N.1.15. You also require at least an 8GB Flash drive (mine was 16GB and FAT32 formatted and worked fine) to put the required files onto in order to do the BIOS upgrade. My 3200Mhz memory is now fully supported, and shows 3200Mhz. Also, I changed my undervolt of -0.70, to -0.80 to re-run some tests above, but the system locked up a couple of times, so changed undervolt to -0.75, and so far no lockups for a few days.

I'm thinking the M15 makes most sense. Gets about 5-6 hours of battery life. I reviewed the RP 17 and that got me 3 hours so I think the 15" will be about 4 hrs.

Just returned my Aorus 17G w. RTX 3070 for the new Max-17 RTX 3070 variant. Gigabyte really dropped the ball not including a MUX or any way to disable Optimus. Funny enough they do have a switchable GPU setting in the Aorus Control Center software for some 15G variants but not the 17G models. I spent about 3 weeks with my 17G and while the build quality, mechanical keyboard and screen are impressive, its not worth spending over $2000 if you get restricted options and performance left on the table. I contacted Gigabyte support inquiring about a possible software or bios update which would include an option to disable Optimus for the 17G and they said they had no plans to. To bad really. Great laptop otherwise and they lost a sale.

I still find it really weird that a Razer Blade Pro 17 with the RTX 2070 Max-Q (non-Super) matches this laptop’s performance, and this has the full fat 115W 2070 Super.

I seem to recall that this does a bit better in beast mode. Also, the Pro 17 can get the 2070 up over 100 watts I think, it just doesn't give you as much direct control over how much juice it's getting at any given time. Anyway, besides all that, Razer is so overpriced 😕

@@SliderFury1Either way, it’s 100W vs 115W (or over 115W) if you saw this. Beast mode is also at the cost of fan noise. Another thing, it’s a 2070 Max-Q. Would probably outperform it overall if it was a Super Max-Q - the earlier versions of the Max 15/17 with the non-super used to get smacked by it. Also the build quality is much better with the Blade, no doubts about that. That’s why it’s ‘overpriced’.

@@SliderFury1 See? Is this some sort of meme or a serious discussion? Did you even bother seeing the price difference? The Max 17 with 16 GB of RAM/512 GB SSD is $1900 and the RBP is $2500. Plus you needn’t always buy both laptops at MSRP, on sale the difference goes down to maybe $200 bucks. I bought my early 2019 Blade 15 with the 2070MQ for $1800 pre-tax in July, not $2399 or whatever the MSRP is. The Mag 15 came out later at around $1600 for similar specs (but with a crappy mouse and headset free), but I felt the extra $200 was well worth it. Also it’s very clear customers will pay $200-300 dollar premiums for better built laptops, I mean Apple’s MacBook and Dell’s XPS line rely on it.

After tax it's like an $800 difference, so you're right, not over $1000, but the last time I checked the Pro 17 Price it was $2,800, not $2600. That still way to much of a difference, the build quality is not that much better, have you actually held one of these magnesium alloy chassis laptops? It's really solid and feels premium and is super light. The real issue is Razer's quality control. Just browse reddit. People have more problems with Razers than almost any other gaming laptop. And their customer service is apparently meh on average. Whereas with Maingear you get help from Microcenter, who have a good rep. Just saying man, if it's worth it you to get what Razer is offering for that much more money, go for it, but the fact is that both of our laptops will go obsolete around the same time.

I have the european importer version pcspecialist vyper 17 (exactly the same laptop). I love it, build quality is something astonishing cause of awesome magnesium chassis even if can be improved in other area (keyboards letters start to peel off after only 3 months on my unit and other friends units, keyboard does not support nkey rollover, audio tuning have a bad equalization out of the box that i tuned personally, and here on pcs bios there's not a ram tuning section). In every other aspect that laptop is superb, nothing to say, battery is long lasting, beast mode turns it out into a desktop pc... gpu maybe can be pushed much further, there's thermal headroom to go at 1680mhz stable but wattage cap it lower (like in your video) and the "boost" features of eluk/tongfang is a fake mode cause asus msi and every other vendor push this gpu even further (not very much but more) in terms of stable frequencies. Anyway, apart from that letter peeling off thing that pissed me off (come on guys, 2000 euro's machine, letter can't peel off after only 3 month in basically every people i know with this machine) is a MONSTRUOSITY of a laptop.

my ceeling is $1500 for laptop, however after owning a lot diferent I find Clevo/sager best built laptops, asus dell lenovo dont come even close from personal expirence, eluxtronic is good build but price premium on them just not worth it imo. cant wait for 3070-6800 gpu equiped laptops, my wallet is already crying

That machine is almost $1000 more than the sale price of the Max 17 now on Newegg. There is no way the AORUS is worth that price premium. IMO it's grossly overpriced regardless.

@@vishalsundararajan1228 16 GB is the base for most gaming laptops. Budget ones start with 1x8GB which is crazy, especially as its single channel. What would be disappointing is if they had soldered RAM like Alienware or Asus who often have 8 GB soldered...

Its an everage looking laptop. With average performance. The 10750h isnt worth getting. Just a rebranded 9750h. Just gone from a 9750h with rtx 2070 max q 17 inch predator helios 300 to a 10885h with 32gb ram and rtx 2080 super NON MAX Q. Only £2,500 pounds no big deal. Never using a cheap (£1,700) or mid range machine again.
