THANK YOU for posting this. It’s always great to get to hear my personal savior, speak his mind, at a given point in time. Edit: Unlike most musicians, who can only manage to communicate effectively via their music, Elvis Costello can tell you clearly how he does his craft. (I won’t name names, but some musicians sound like idiots).

I love all of his albums up to Blood and Chocolate but my fave is Get Happy. He was never racist. His use of the N word in Oliver’s Army was taken out of context by ignorant people. A few years before, John Lennon released Woman is the N***** Of the World and got away with it. Hardly anyone suggested he was a racist. Elvis Costello was (and remains) one of the finest Lyricist that we ever produced in Britain

@@simonholyoak8869 he's not talking about the n word in Oliver's Army near the end of this interview. he's referring to another incident where he drunkenly called Ray Charles and James Brown ''jive ass n-words''

@@simonholyoak8869True. "White n****r" was a reference to the Irish. The 'Oliver' in question is clearly Oliver Cromwell, a hate figure of many Irish Catholics.

I feel bad for Elvis Costello. Even as a younger kid, I do remember hearing the rumors that he was racist. And it was a bit bothering because I really liked his music. I can really feel his regret what had happened, and glad he got through it. You'll always be my hero Elvis.

The rumors were BS. He said some things dead drunk and full of pills during a bar brawl... and the racist remark was said at white people, as an "outrageous thing to say" to infuriate them
@4herstory
@4herstory Жыл бұрын
That's funny. I never heard anything like that he was racist. I did hear he ate pussy like a beast (in a good way ☺️🤯🤓👍), but that may be because I grew up in the town of L.A. where I believe he met legendary groupie, Pamela Des Barres. Maybe what u heard was that he was "racy"? Is that possible? Because I truly can't imagine the suggestion of him being a "racist" as anything short of a despicable rumor with no basis in fact. There's certainly nothing in this interview to suggest otherwise, as I'd expect u noticed if u watched it thru. Of course, do share if u perceive the matter differently. But, don't forget that England ended slavery two hundred years before US, & hence, white men there don't generally share the undercurrent of racism that's sadly still evidently endemic in some parts of my vast (if not always "great") country. 🥱 Anyway, do u know who IS great? Elvis C. 😎 (for he's a "Cunning Linguist", natch!) 😜😱 Best of luck disputing THAT. 😇

Eventually you have to forgive when a man is this sorry for what he said. We all step in it at some point in are lives. And did Mr. Costello say what he said in a literal or figurative context? It's very important to know the context in which it was said. By the way, let me just clarify that I don't speak for every black person but I happen to be black.
