Alrighty Seph! So the history behind the 1968 Comeback Special in its entirety is A LOT. So what I have decided to do is wait until you actually get there to give you the real low down. For now: Elvis actually gave 4 performances that were videotaped; two sit down performances & two stand up performances. There are performances from each that had been edited out before it aired in December of 1968. These "edited out" sections of the performances have been slowly but surely released over the years. Plus there is a separate full audio only of the rehearsals where Elvis was trying out different songs, some of which never made it into the show. So those rehearsals are a REAL treat to listen to- at least for me. You can hear people talking and Elvis just relaxed, plucking his guitar and singing and laughing and having what sounds like a good time. The full taped version with all 4 shows unedited is over two hours long. However the original edited version of the 1968 Comeback Special was just 50 minutes long. That is just to give you an idea how much was edited out. On the stage: It was Steve Binder's idea to have a stage for Elvis that resembled a boxing ring. Also: Elvis's manager wanted Elvis to perform in a blue tuxedo and it was originally supposed to be Elvis singing Christmas carols. Elvis was very angry at that point with Parker from what I've read. Elvis's initial response to the show was negative. He didn't want to do a Christmas show. So a meeting was arranged where Parker agreed to give "full creative control" to Finkel, Binder, and Elvis. (Like I said there is A LOT more to this whole story than what some may think.) Now on the famous Black Leather Suit: Bill Belew designed it for Elvis. Elvis sweated in it which meant that Bill and his design team had to wash it by hand in between shows because to send to have it professionally cleaned would have taken too long. I will also be giving you information on your previous three Elvis reactions, Seph. I just fell behind yesterday... Ugh. FANTABULOUS REACTION SEPH! THANK YOU SO MUCH! YOU'RE A GRAND FELLOW 💎👌 Peace ✌, light 🌞, love 💖, & blessings 🙏 to you & yours & to one & all here as well 💕 P.S. Please read the following for not info; these are copied & pasted snippets from Wiki: Presley's initial reaction to the special was negative. He felt that it was another scheme concocted by Parker and was angered by the idea of singing Christmas carols on national television. However, his opinion changed after he began talks with the special's producer, Bob Finkel, who persuaded Singer, NBC and Parker to alter the show's original concept. Finkel obtained Parker's approval that the show was to be centered only on Presley, while enough material for a soundtrack album and a Christmas single was to be recorded. Presley's enthusiasm for the project grew, and he assured Finkel that he was ready to perform new material, different from anything he had previously done. He had no interest in Parker's opinion of the project. To reflect the new intended direction of Presley's career, Finkel recruited director Steve Binder, who had directed the concert film T.A.M.I. Show and worked for NBC on Hullabaloo and a Petula Clark special. Finkel felt that hiring Binder would refresh Presley's image and that Binder would be able to reintroduce Presley to new audiences. Initially reluctant to direct the special, Binder was convinced by his associate Bones Howe, who had met Presley during the 1950s while he worked at Radio Recorders as an audio engineer. He insisted on working with Presley as he thought that Binder had similar production methods. A meeting was arranged during which Parker assured that the team would have full creative control but stressed that the publishing rights must be under Presley's name. Howe and Binder met with Presley later that week and informed him that they would prepare all of the details for the special by the time that Presley would return from his vacation in Hawaii. Binder and Howe developed the concept of the informal section of the show after seeing Presley interacting with his entourage while playing music during breaks. Binder planned to shoot the segment in the locker room to give the public a sense of how Presley's music was developed in an intimate setting, but Parker opposed this concept. Binder settled for a sit-down concert on a small stage that resembled a boxing ring.

You know that the emotional connection that the younger generation feels when listening to Elvis Presley's voice speaks to the timelessness of his music and the power of his performances. Music has a unique ability to transcend generations and touch people's hearts, and Elvis's music clearly continues to resonate deeply with many, evoking strong emotions even years after his passing.

A total and complete revolution for Elvis on this one. This is why it was eventually known as "Comeback". This is when Elvis decided to come back and get his crown taken from the Beatles and British invasion. From this movement onwards, Elvis decided to get back to touring.

Seph, I was expecting a movie song this morning & nearly fell off my chair when I saw the video title 😲. In 1968 Elvis was breathtakingly handsome, dressed head to toe in black leather & on top of his game. But still ever so humble, Elvis said "How do I look? Do I look alright?" The '68 Comeback Special' became the most watched show of the television season!

This was filmed for his TV Special. And yes he sang If You Can Dream. But again there are different stages he performed on, because it's being shot for a television show. There are even some choreographed gospel songs etc. The absolutely most astounding part is his sit down performances with his original band. His vocals are absolutely insane... Best to you :-)

I think every Elvis fan loves the Comeback Special. He was very nervous, so much so (I read) that he refused to come out of his dressing room, said, "I can't do it." So Steve Binder told him he had to, even if he just went out there and turned around and left again. The tickets to the making of the TV show were free; Tom Parker was supposed to take care of that, but shortly before the show Binder found out he'd just given them to a gate guard and told him to hand them out. So they almost didn't have an audience. (I believe some of the NBC personnel went to a burger joint and handed them out.) My personal opinion is that Parker was angry he'd been cut out of major decisions for the show (or ignored or overridden) and he was being petty. I love "The Elvis" in his black leather. ❤️

For me this is the most epic Elvis ever, extremely good choice for a 10k celebration. Easy 5 times banger absolutely top notch. He reinvented himself and showed the world what the real thing is all about after those movie years. He is ooooozing with everything he's got. The stage is like a boxing ring without the ropes and he is hitting hard punches right to your stomach and to your very soul. You have just open the doors to pure greatness. Some things you really should buy and own and not settle for Ytvideos, this is worth every amount. You need to watch this show from beginning to the end over and over and over and over... again. More people watched this show in the U.S. than the first moonlanding. There's a 3 dvd with rehearsals, bloopers and the original show. The King is back with a BANG and he wants his crown back. 👑

And we love talking to you too, Seph, and watching your enjoyment as you discover more about the Elvis 😊 You've just seen Elvis at his peak. He was about to get out of the movie contracts that had kept him away from doing the live performances and having the contact with his audience that he loved. He only had about 2 more movies to make. Believe it or not, he was so worried that no-one would like him any more that, at first, he wouldn't come out of his dressing room! If you notice when he first starts singing he brings his hand up to the microphone and just for a second or two before he actually gets hold of it you can see that his hand is shaking. He was in a good place in his life at this time. He had got married the year before and had become a dad just a few months before this. And now, he was getting back into what he loved doing the most, performing for a live audience. We have been telling you for a while now to just wait until you get to the '68 Special' and when you do get to 1968 and see the whole production, you will be even more amazed 😍 By-the-way, he sweated so much in that leather outfit that they had to cut it open at the seams to get it off him afterwards. I wonder who was the lucky person who got to do that 😏😍 Keep working your way through the years and we will keep watching and enjoying your reactions 😊

I don’t want to ruin too much but this was after he had been fed up with his movies and that music so this was an NBC Special to bring him back into live audiences and it eventually was referred to as the 68 Comeback Special. There’s a lot more of this. 2018 had an Anniversary Special of this on TV. That stage was to mimic he and his band mates jamming in the evenings. Oddly, he was so petrified that he told Steve Binder, the director he couldn’t go out right before the show. Steve talked him into it by saying go out and if you can’t do it come back. Elvis in his usual fashion, went out and after 3 songs(sitting) relaxed and did sitting and standing songs. Ironically Reinventing Elvis just came out recently in the theaters which was about this. Now, I have to tell you I’m not exactly a Spring chicken anymore but went with my Son(young adult also Elvis fan) and my husband. I sat in the first row and even though it was a recliner, almost broke my neck. Well, seeing a gigantic Elvis clad in black leather writhing, singing and profusely sweating almost made myself and every other woman in the Theater almost pass out. I got so excited, the cheese from my nachos flew out of my dish & plopped on the seat next to me. Luckily no one was as stupid as us as to sit in the front row so I didn’t hit anyone. It’s now streaming on Paramount Plus but I got the idea of how it must have been to see Elvis live back then and why the people went nuts. 😂😂😂😂❤❤

The 68 Special was divided into basically three parts. A standup ( black suit), sit down ( black suit), and intricate production numbers (gospel, bordello, etc.) When you decide to watch the Elvis 2022 movie you will see what an amazing job Austin Butler did on the Comeback Special. It’s like looking at Elvis in the flesh. I would NOT recommend that you watch the movie at this stage of your journey. Maybe at the end of the ride. It would be great if you did a movie reaction when the time comes. As a subscriber, I would like to see your reaction and get your thoughts.

@@Barbara-lb5yt Maybe “ in the flesh” was the wrong choice of words. I was trying to make the point that Austin was particularly good in those scenes. He had the mannerism down just perfect. Personally . I loved the movie. The cinematography, set production and costume design were done so well, but I respect that others did not share my opinion. I saw Elvis twice in concert. I felt that magnetism firsthand. I just sat in awe during both concerts. He could have sung the ABC song and I would not have cared. I was so mesmerized. 🙂 Still have my ticket stubs after all these years. He had a great sense of humor on stage.

@@tlo3571 I think that Austin put a lot of work & effort into "being Elvis". I like the movie but I don't love it. When I first saw the movie in theaters I had chills from the first. I held my breath and I was utterly captivated. The colors, the scenery, the costumes, the pacing of the story line, all AMAZING. I have my reasons for not loving the movie. But that has nothing to do with the fine job Austin Butler did. I saw him in that movie trailer in the part where's walking out to the boxing ring like stage of the 1968 Comeback Special and I was blown away. He REALLY studied Elvis. To the point where after the movie was finished, he had some kind of health problem or collapse and needed to admitted to the hospital. He said later that Elvis haunted him. Lisa Marie became very close to him. They became very good friends and Lisa Marie not only gave Austin her blessing but she also said when she watched with her daughters they all cried. She said that the movie gave her father his dignity back. And we Elvis fans know how protective she was of her father and how important thar was to her. So for that reason alone I will always humbly respect what the movie did, for both Lisa Marie and Elvis. I too would love to hear Seph's opinion on the Elvis 2022 movie and his thoughts on Austin as Elvis of course. Anyway... How LUCKY are YOU! You got to see Elvis in concert- TWICE 😲 WOW!

@@Barbara-lb5yt it has been interesting to see people’s reaction to the movie. I do not consider it a biopic. The movie was almost solely about his career. I think people went into the movie expecting a straight biopic like Bohemian Rhapsody. Going into a movie expecting one type of movie and getting something different is very disheartening. They should have called it Elvis and the Snowman. That title would be more telling. One thing we can agree on is Elvis was mind blowing.🎸I’m glad I was old enough in the 70s to experience it.

Um, focusing on his clothes and sideburns is a little like stopping to note the colours of the deck-chairs as the Titanic sinks. It’s the voice and charisma, baby! If you really pay attention, you will see-this being his very first live show on the 68 special, and the first overall for 9 years-his hand shakes during the opening number as he grabs the Mic. I think from his expression he soon realised he had nothing to worry about! Well done on the subscriber milestone. A lovely day to all.

@@Barbara-lb5yt and the colour of the deck-chairs was important … but I wouldn’t mention them as the most important aspect of the event. So, of course what Elvis’ was wearing was important and iconic, but not the most important aspect to note of the performance, and his sideburns? I’m guessing that wasn’t the reaction Mr P was going for. As an addendum, certainly, but I wouldn’t stop to talk about his wardrobe 5-seconds into the video. Indeed, if it was a lady performing and I commented on her outfit and look, then I suspect i’d be called sexist, right? 😉 Look no big deal, and no big sin, but perhaps the vocals and performance take precedence. They do for me. Thank you for your thoughts and have a terrific rest of your week.

Ive never seen elvis like this! Thats the reason why i was so shocked! You've probably seen this hundreds of times so the *Magic* is probably gone for you. But for me its like seeing my best friend having a total makeover and major plastic surgery! Shocking to my eyes and soul! And he's A LOT older too last time i saw him was in 1963 thats 5 years different! So im sorry i was obsessed with his look but damnnnn so would you be if you were in my situation 🤯

I was 8 years old when this special appeared on TV. I had only seen Elvis in a few movies. And only knew the songs from Roustabout soundtrack because my older brother had the record. When I saw Elvis in this special I was amazed! I knew it was the same guy as on the Roustabout cover but he just seemed SO much cooler! I could not take my eyes off of him!

Hiya so the 68 comeback was originally set up in 67 with the idea off a xmas special . Recently Angie Markazie the head of archives at graceland talked about documents she had concerning this event . Its very interesting. Anyway Steve binder the producer saw elvis jamming in his dressing room and knew this was the elvis the people needed to see. The complete show was 1 hr but in the 90s a dvd was realsed with the full shows which were 2 sit down shows 2 stand up shows a gospel section and an bordello section . Luckily I have that DVD

If you watch Reinventing Elvis-68 Special documentary, Binder states Elvis was so scared, he said “I’m not going”. Binder leaves and goes to control room, not knowing if He will go on stage. Elvis does of course, but he was scared and you can see his hand shaking at the beginning of this video when he touched the microphone stand. (This is also in Elvis 2022 film). Poor Elvis ❤

Great reaction to this classic medley from his 1968 comeback special. I was born a year after this special took place. My parents had the original tapes and I still have them somewhere in my attic. Would also love to see your reaction to one of the most underated hits from 1973 called " WHERE, DO I GO FROM HERE " brings a lot of memories back. Thanks again buddy.

A few years ago a Danish newspaper did a review of the 10 best combacks ever (when David Bowie made his last records) and which one did they chose as number 1 ? This one of couse 😊 Also a writer from the Rolling Stone magazine wrote this "if there ever was music that bled, this was it". You should Google the entire review , I think the writer was Marcus Greil, or something like that. You should also buy the 68 comeback special boxset that came out around 4 years ago, it has blue Ray of the comeback special together with CD's, and a booklet with comments and BEAUTIFUL pictures. I think it also had all the outtakes from the production (the special scenes, the two sitdown shows and the two standup shows and All the outtakes).

Fun surprise, Seph! Elvis makes us so happy. A lot of the people at this concert were long time fans who received special tickets. I think it was because they loved Wlvis, were enthralled with him and yet they could be trusted to sit near him without trying to touch him, etc. He was coming more into his own during this time. Love your reactions!

Actually, Colonel was supposed to distribute the tickets, but he didn't. The first audience was mainly people who were eating at a nearby restaurant that the producers went and grabbed! The second audience had more actual Elvis fans because by then word had gotten out about the taping of the special and fans started showing up.

Congratulations! What a great surprise to see this! It was his reemergence back onto the real music scene after all those movies. The late 60’s was the pinnacle of his beauty to me. His voice had definitely deepened and became so powerful by then. It just gives you the goosebumps!! Others have filled you in on the background to this special tv show. A new documentary just was released about the making of this special -by the director Steve Binder called Reinventing Elvis. Haven’t seen it yet but everyone says it’s really good! The ‘68 special totally revived his singing career and reinvigorated his fan base I’m sure. (Little before my time).

Leather jacket and pants is what he had on, I think at least one of the women/girls that watched it might have been a little exited It was like a boxingring without the ropes, so it was a few people there, but I bet they liked the show, he had not performed for years, he had made 31 movies and before that he had 2 years in the military service, that is why it's later called 68 comeback, it is his comeback to a stage, even if it's a small one to suit the tvteam I think that they took people in from the streets so he had a small audience, so they are not even Elvis fans, that is perhaps why they are so relaxed

It's me again, just have to tell you a few things about this special which I watched in real time. Elvis was not real happy about doing this TV special. He was afraid they would make fun of him like they did on Sullivan. He was terrified right up too the beginning of the show. In fact he called producer Steve Bender to his dressing room just minutes before the show started. He told Bender that he couldn't do it. Bender said, Elvis you have to do it, now I am going out there and I want you to come out if nothing else, just to say hi. You can see Elvis is very nervous when he finally comes out at the sit down jam with his original band. You need to see "Trying to Get to You". And " On night with you, he is very casual when he finally calms down. Two o those that will blow your mind, is the opening production number, "Trouble/Guitar Man". And a sweet song with the audience " Memories". Gorgeous. Thanks for this little celebration, congrats on you many subscribers, you are the man, Seph.

10K..."bangah"!...Congrats Seph on being your own, plucky, zany, enthusiastic and lighthearted self on this Elvis journey and other reactions. Good job mate. Yes this was an up close and personal stage they set up for the 68 Comeback Special. Can you imagine the anticipation by the lucky few who were chosen to be in that audience that made history? I'm sure that the women didn't sleep for a week before and after. The DVD of this show is a treasure. It includes all the outtakes that shows the Elvis in all his imperfect glory, the frustration and hard work he put into this show to please all the production. if you can find the outtakes which if I remember right (my DVD is packed away and have't viewed it in years, due a revisit) is about 15 minutes worth and is well worth a go for you to react to it as only you can do. "the women in the front are in close proximity of certain bits of the Elvis" 😯😲😅lmao...Cheers
