Before Elvis singers stood at the mic and sang. Kids listened to the music that their parents listened to and dressed like them. Elvis came along wearing pink jackets and all sorts of colours and with a swagger and sneer and sexuality that they couldn’t cope with. And he did it all naturally and with a great sense of humour. There has never been anyone like him before or since.

You should see Sinatra's performances in his 20s... you should see Louis Prima... no. Folks were dancin' and sliding around stages for, oh, I suspect well before the 20th Century. Vaudevile was full of showmanship.

@@BuffaloC305 No comparison at all, Elvis was oozing with charm, magnetism and stage presence. Not to mention his good looks, voice, moves and sense of humor. He had everything as BB King, Mohammed Ali and others said in their interview, He was truly blessed cause he was also a good person who helped people in need even a total strangers. This "Don't Be Cruel" performance was when he was shown only from the waist up at the Ed Sullivan Show because of complaints from some Christian groups. In his 50s concert in Florida he was ordered by the mayor and judge not to move his hips/legs or he will be arrested. What he did was wiggled his pinky and the girls still screamed, 😊 lol!

Well, obviously, a lot more people loved Elvis than hated him in the 1950s, or him and rock and roll would have fizzled out back then. But the genie was out of the bottle and Elvis just couldn't be stopped. Many people who didn't care for Elvis when he first started, later became big fans of his.

My san is biracial, black hair, olive complexion, and green eyes. I taught him how to look and act like Elvis. I entered him in every Elvis contest, from 3yrs old to 14, and he won all but 2. This is the infamous "only from the waist up," performance. Elvis and everyone watching from the audience in the theater to the viewers at home which drew a huge audience but it worked out even better for him because he was turned a forbidden fruit and that added to his rating not detracted from them. However, Elvis was given a warning that they would cut the broadcast if he had started to do his moves. So Elvis waited to the last part of the song and then let loose. Also, this is where he added hand gestures and some facial expressions so the home viewers saw movement.

This is the performance where he was told they would only film him from the chest up due to his previously "shocking" performance on this show. He was trying hard to break out of it to the best of his ability here but you can see how otherwise uncomfortable he is being forced to not be himself and to not move.

Adults had tight sphincters in the 50s and they thought Elvis's movements were immoral. This was Elvis's 3red appearance on Sullivan. The first 2 were shot normally but they got angry calls from sponsors and viewers. What you just saw was their trying to control that by just shooting him from the waist up.

Elvis changed the performance a bit from the original studio recording --for the best. He tweaked it by borrowing from Jackie Wilson's take on the song --especially Jackie's pronunciation of TEL E PHONE. I'm glad you were enjoying his performance. You might have let Ed Sullivan speak at the end though.

Dead right...he talks about it on The Million Dollar Quartet...he doesn't know it's JW at that time but just loves the way JW sings DBC...even says it's better than his version...I think JW was the singer in Billy Ward and the Dominoes and Elvis saw them in Vegas in 1956...I love TMDQ, it's pure history...listening to Elvis, Jerry Lee and Carl just chatting and jamming...and full of praise for the likes of JW and Chuck Berry...doncha just love it when he smiles after TELEPHONE, like it's his own private joke....and later he and Jackie became close friends.

This seems to be one of those where they refused to let the camera go down below his waist because there was too much pushback from mostly older white people. But yeah, it is always fascinating for me to see him as a Young Man. There's one that he does with Frank Sinatra or it's just a duet there's no dancing or anything but it's hilarious to see him so incredibly young up against the icon of the day which was Frank Sinatra and a lot of ways. It's a black and white clip and I guess they were both nervous to get together on the Frank Sinatra show but they paid Elvis money to have him come on since he was just starting to explode but once they get into it, you can tell there is immediate chemistry and it's pretty fascinating.

The thing about this Elvis video was that when he was on tv before he was swinging his legs and hips and shaking. Which caused a big uproar among the religious and older people. So when he was booked to be on tv again they decided to ONLY film and show him from a head and shoulders shot. And then at the end of the video when you could tell he was shaking and doing something below the camera, and the audience screaming. That the tv viewers could only imagine what nasty sinful sexual movement's were going on out side of what they could see.
