ELVIS is the King because he was the first to do it all on that level... Period... Huge sales... controversy... Scandals... He was drafted into the army at the height of his fame... many believe because he posed such a threat to america etc... But he just went along like a good clean cut all american boy and served his time... Movies... Sided with civil activism... Criticism for all he did... He had his entourage called the Memphis Mafia... Had huge mega elaborate stages... Wardrobes and bling... Drugs ... Women... World tours... He was even the very first to be broadcasted to millions worldwide through satellite on tv ..... ELVIS paved the way for EVERYTHING that we know a "star" is today.....

When Elvis performed this on the Ed Sullivan Show, the network would not let the cameras show below his waist because they considered his dancing to be lewd. And keep in mind, the Ed Sullivan Show was aired live.. not pre-recorded. Elvis broke all kinds of barriers by introducing Black influence into "white America's" Rock n Roll back in the 50's. My Mom grew up in the 50's and saw Elvis live several times when he toured with the Louisiana Hayride.

Loved your reaction! There were actually several variety shows on tv back in the day that featured lots of different entertainers, and The Ed Sullivan Show was the biggest of them all. Even though this is the show that really catapulted Elvis' career, he wasn't the first to perform on this type of show. Popular opinion is that they only filmed Elvis from the waist up on the 11 tv show appearances he did. Actually, he appeared 10 times on 4 different shows in 1956. And it was only on his last performance on The Ed Sullivan Show in early 1957 that he was filmed from the waist up.

This was 2 days before his 22nd birthday. It was the last of his 3 appearances on the Ed Sullivan’s show Jan 1957. 1956 was his 1st yr of National fame. There had been many other singers on TV in the past, but they weren’t like Elvis. Elvis released his first RCA song, Heartbreak Hotel in Jan. 1956, and by April 6th he already had a lucrative movie deal, and his first movie was released in Nov 56. He had so many #1 hits in 1956. It was his voice, delivery and looks that made him the King. Those first 2 yrs, he caused a lot of controversy with adults, who thought he was just too sexy and some said he was vulgar. Kids, teens and young adults thought he was the best thing ever.

@Demochets- Great Elvis song guys. He was around 21 here. He was preforming Don't be Cruel on Ed Sullivan show and he told his people not to film him from the wastes down just because he moved his hips. It was a joke but that was considered Controversial back then. His backup group here was his first backup group called The Jordaniares. He would eventually switch to The sweet Inspirations led by Whitney Houston's mom Cisy Houston but that wouldn't be until around 69. Please Please react to Elvis and The Black Community. It is really great and will give you an understanding why Elvis was so close to black people.

What you missed maybe is that when he picked it up the cameras stayed focused on his upper half because the FCC had ruled that showing him below the waist was obscene and not allowed to be on television without risking losing the broadcast license for the station. This put the broadcasters in a bind. They wanted Elvis because the viewing audiences were HUGE and that meant that advertisers, who paid by the view would cough up the big dough. So, although there was a lot of pressure to keep him off of television entirely, they resisted because he was a cash cow and the compromise that was reached (for awhile) was to only show the top half. The audience, though, reacts with screams to his dancing. It was just dancing, with a lot of the moves learned from Little Richard. Sexy as. White folk didn't want their kids exposed to actual life, though. The kids themselves, though, were like, "Expose me, please!" Love y'all. I shared the video on twitter. Everyone please click like and comment. It makes the algorithm a lot more likely to share this video to others because KZbin likes engagement. Help this channel grow. You don't have to wait for KZbin to share the video, though, you can do it. If you are on other media, blast this shit. This channel is the shiznitz.

Elvis had to restrain his natural instinct for dancing when he was on TV as it was considered obscene. When he was on TV they'd only show him from the waist up. There's video out there now showing his full body in those performances. Michael Jackson loved Elvis and used some of his moves. For example Michael's move during Billy Jean where he's on his toes.

This is 1956 and that's really, really early for rock music. Even Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" is two years in the future. This year, 1956, Carl Perkins has "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Honey Don't," both of which are fabulous. If you go back further in time, in 1951 Ike Turner and Jackie Brenston have "Rocket 88," which some people consider the first rock song. You can go back even further to 1946 and Arthur Crudup has "That's Alright Mama," which is very close to rock. These are the people who invented rock.
@jayviviano109
@jayviviano109 2 жыл бұрын
Arthur Crudup an interesting one to dissect because even though he was one of Elvis's big influences, Arthur himself thought that Elvis' version was vastly different from his own. - "Elvis's version was different from mine, he mixed Blues with hillbilly. I liked it. Everybody liked it." - (from 1969 interview) He basically was giving voice to what many others from that era had said that sort of set Elvis apart. Arthur was stating precisely what Elvis was good for doing ...taking old blues songs and revamping them in a way that made them different than the originals. Something else interesting about Arthur Crudup is he himself borrowed so heavily from Blues Legends before him- like Big Bill Broonzy for example - that in all sincerity we can't talk about Arthur Crudup without giving a nod to some of those Others that Arthur himself owed much of his music to. And interesting enough Elvis also mentioned Big Bill Broonzy in one interview as another influence. So Big Bill influenced BOTH Arthur ... and then later Elvis. The cross-connections are interesting and almost endless the more we dig

Auto tune didn't show up until around 1997 or 1998 I believe.. Most of your singers back then grew up singing in church or sang at home. Singing was a form of entertainment at home on Sundays. They encouraged the children to sing. Just like they taught us to dance. Although we learn our own type of dances on our own.
