Gladys Love Smith, a woman of humble status, gave birth to the greatest singer in the history recorded music, and she, like her her son, Elvis Presley, will live in annuals of history. And you, Billy, thank you for allowing us to visit places that we cannot for whatever reason.

Thanks for take us back in time to 1934 Billy and Trey. I`m sure of Gladys had long days with sewing in this factory and went home with pain in neck and shoulders and many concerns about her future as a lonely mother, since Vernon went to jail. I send a honor to all the hard working women`s in the Garment Company`s back then 1930-1940

WONDERFUL this building is still standing and has a Business. I'm surprised the building had a Sprinkler System? In my area there WAS a Garment Company and looked like this one in Tupelo. It was build in "1887" and something happened to get HOT, started a BLAZE, burned down in "1982". NO Sprinkler Systems; HOT, MUGGY in summer on top of ALL THOSE SEWING MACHINE heat ! ! In Middle School we went on a School Trip there. HOT! ! ! MUGGY! ! ! Couldn't hardly breath [sneezing] for the lint in the air! ! ! The windows were open, didn't help any. We were told there had been many small fires from the sewing machine over heating and catching the garments on fire. These Lady's were Over Worked and Under Paid, this is 1982. I worked in a Sewing Factory from 1975 to 1979. . .same thing. . .350 to 380 Ladies all being cheated out of their wages. . .many Ladies were also cheated out of FREE Turkey/Ham [like me] for Thanksgiving from the New York mother Company. I gave a written Resignation for two weeks and left. The Ladies seen I stood up for my Employment Rights. Someone contacted the New York Office and they came out with 18 Wheelers to load the sewing machines and off to CALIFORNIA with many of the Ladies and their Families relocating PAID BY New York Company.

I really enjoyed this story about Elvis Mom . It made me cry to learn how much pain and suffering they endured . It was hard times and it made Elvis want to give give some back expecting nothing bAck but to see their surprised and happy faces . Elvis will be remembered throughout the centuries for his generosity as as well his charisma and as the best singer ! This is my next place to visit ! Thanks for sharing this ! Next month I’ll be visiting Arkansas !

@Spa Guy Billy, at the risk of sounding like a broken record........... I have to say, you just keep un earthing more and more pieces to the Elvis puzzle like a highly gifted archeologist or should I say with your Columbo or Starsky and or Hutch instincts. But at any rate, I think I can speak for myself and ALL THE S.G.F.’S out there, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the time and effort that you put into all these videos....... the research, editing and the travel time. And it’s like they say if you do something that you truly enjoy, it’s not like work at all, but even with that being said it’s still time that takes you away from your Family, so once again thank you my Friend for all the hard work it does NOT go un-appreciated.......... And of course thank you for tightening all of us S.G.F.

Hi there my friend Spa Guy. I had the pleasure of seeing the Garment factory where Gladys Presley worked when I visited Tupelo last year. Crossed the railway tracks too and saw the other houses that Elvis and his Mum lived. Gave me goosebumps but it was wonderful to see. Trying to visit Memphis again next year. Thanks. Brought back memories of my visit there. ❤️🕺🏻

I had a long line of family members who worked in garment factories. They called them shirt factories. And they WERE hot in the summer. There were fans but they just blew the hot air around. I myself worked in a cotton mill until a couple of years ago when I retired. We had air conditioning but all the machines made it hot. We made the cotton into yarn and thread to make the garments. Thank you for the video. I can just imagine a pregnant Gladys working hard and praying her child would not grow up and have to work so hard. ❤

Man dont you KNOW that place must have been like an oven in the summer time too. My wife is from Alabama and she too worked in the old Garment Factories. I am so thankful that Vernon loaded them all up in that old car and moved to Memphis. If they had stayed IN Tupelo Elvis would probably still been working some where down there. My Twins were BORN in Tupelo in 1980. :)

Billy, this is very cool. The building is so much bigger once you get inside. I read a biography and it said that Gladys made $2 a week working at this sewing factory. Can you imagine how loud it was in there with all of those sewing machine running? Now we know why Elvis liked his music so loud. Lol. I like that the building was still mostly original. The old floors and the old elevator. It must be something that you walked the very floors that Gladys did when she worked there. Thank you so much. I really enjoyed this video and to think that Elvis played at the fairground that can be seen from the top floor. Thank you so much Spa Guy. God Bless.

My Grandmother and her parents worked in sewing plants for many years too . My Grandmother's father was a sewing machine mechanic . It was hard work back then . I worked at a company that put emblems on sports clothes . We even would put the emblems on hats , shirts , and jackets for the Atlanta Braves /The Georgia Bulldogs / Atlanta Falcons . I worked there while I was pregnant with my daughter. I quit on a Wednesday and I had her on a Friday . When I had my baby daughter , the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck 5 or 6 times . The doctor said , it was because I was so stressed out and it caused my baby to be under a lot of stress too . That's why that happened . This video makes me wonder if Gladys worked right up until she had Elvis and Jessi ? I wonder if that could have played a part in why Jessi was stillborn ? Poor Gladys . I don't blame Elvis for wanting his mama to quit working . I would have done the same thing if I could've .

Bonnie Brown I’m sorry to hear that happened. I, too was born with the chord wrapped around my neck twice. I was blue and was about gone. They about lost us both. I wonder too, if that happened with Jesse. I remember reading that Vernon said the babies were similar but not identical, so he must have been a healthy looking baby that they lost during childbirth. They said her labor was difficult, long and hard. I’m glad God blessed them with Elvis. They very easily could have lost him too. They never could conceive anymore after that and the doctor couldn’t find or see the reason why, Vernon said God had given them all that they’d ever need, and he certainly did! One thing that really interests me that I’d love to hear more about is the blue light Vernon seen the night Elvis was born. Another is the UFO Elvis and Sonny seen.

Great footage SG. Into the WayBac machine. My mother actually worked in a glove factory 2 weeks after she got out of HS.We went and visited this building many moons ago. looked very much the same as this factory building. The old craftsmanship on these buildings are over the top compared to the quick throw 'em up quick building of today. Everything is 'built in' these buildings,,,diagonal flooring for example if very much extra work,,but look it is still standing and usable. The old woodenn tracks and cable freight elevators are still working to this day. Old fashioned most of the time is 'good fashioned' . Thanks again for more pieces of the Elvis puzzle.

This is a fascinating look back in time....Elvis time. To think that you may have been walking in the very footsteps of Gladys while Elvis was being formed in her belly , is amazing . It gives me chills ( good ones, not bad ones ) to know that this is a part of where Elvis truly began, and no one knew it then that this expected baby ( actually babies ) would change the world and become a king. Predestiny IS a miraculous thing !

Nicely done. Friend and I were doing a midnight tour in the dark of Tupelo couple summers ago and found the old house on Maple Street behind the Garment Factory. Would be a wonderful thing to track down somebody from Tupelo that was their back at that time and have them do a walk-through on video, giving detailed account of what it was like to work there back in the day. Last year when I visited Tupelo I ran into someone that told me there were indeed some older folks still alive and well in Tupelo that remember working at the Garment Factory around 1940 (give or take a year or two). They may not have worked with Gladys but could definitely paint the exact picture of what it was like back then. For that matter might be interesting to ask around to see if there's anyone in town still with us that may have in fact recalled working there when Gladys did.

Mr. Spa Guy my man, you are the best. Thank you again for a great video. If only people around the world would know where Elvis's parent's came from and how they lived before ok Craceland etc, etc. People in Europe not all of the but most of them have no idea about all what you are showing, they only relate to Craceland and all the movies Elvis made. Ok again, thank you Billy you are the best. Also, people ok the most of them so when they sing Elvis song's they only sing those easy song's ok maybe about 100 of them but why don't they try to sing all the 800 of them that Elvis did record...…...……….you all know what I mean. I never heard anybody sing as an ex. I'm a visling man or don't ok many of the song's that Elvis was singing in the movies wow, they all are so good ok, one more.........so what about Tender feeling etc, etc no nada because those song's are to hard so Elvis...……….again, thank you for being you and what you did for all of us now who are enjoying your talent. TCB from Vasa Finland.
