What a story, she was one the most fortunate young girl's who actually got to meet Elvis. It sound's like the Presley family were just really gracious people who didn't set themselve's apart from the general public, her parent's really loved her to buy a house at her request. I love the title of her book, the man in my backyard being Elvis, it doesn't get any better than that.

Yes. She was very lucky to live next door to Elvis. Problem American parents had those days was, they couldn’t appreciate Elvis’s style of dancing. They were doing their best to keep their children, especially the girls who went wild over him, away from Elvis. This was not just in America, but all over the world parents were doing their best to protect their kids. Some were very lucky to get the opportunity meet him, go to his concerts and getting kissed even. I certainly wasn’t Blessed to see him.

The Presley’s and Smith’s certainly seemed to be gracious, polite and understanding neighbors. Never ceases to impress me how Elvis was so considerate and conscious of his fans and neighbors. He was humble and understood what it meant to ppl when he’d take a few minutes of his time to visit and talk. I know he was grateful and thankful to his fans, but he obviously genuinely loved ppl/humanity. I’ve encountered ppl that didn’t have a small fraction of his looks, talent or money, but esteemed themselves far above other’s around them. (Which floors me, lol!) I know we’re all are only human and have good and bad days, but you could tell it was never just an act or forced when it came to Elvis being thoughtful and considerate. I’m a firm believer in treating ppl as you’d want to be treated and helping one another along in this journey. God didn’t intend for us to struggle alone but to be kind and encouraging. Believe those instructions and commandments come second only to salvation. Salvation being the first most important and obviously we can’t be of righteousness if we aren’t good stewards. God’s love and patience was evident in Elvis, abundantly so. That’s literally what set the guy apart from everyone else. God’s love and handprint. Believe he was showing off when he made that boy, lol. I’m only kidding. However anything and everything good about us is of God, and his image from deep within our being to our physical form. I have read literally all the Elvis books. This book, by Shirley Connell is one of my very favorites. I highly recommend this book. It gives the reader a real inside look into Elvis and his life from his back yard neighbor! Order her Book!! Billy you should spend more time with Shirley!

Many wonderful memories made by local fans thanks to the kindness of her parents. Her father kept a ladder handy so when people came and asked to look over after the second fence was higher he was ready. He always laughed and enjoyed the fans. Shirley and her family are mentioned in the Donna Lewis books also.

Elvis treated everyone with so much respect. I heard Elvis doing an interview in the 60's I believe around 1967 and Elvis said once you get into this business your personal life is not your own anymore because people are curious and they have their little cameras and autograph books and they want something to take home with them. I don't do it to make myself more popular. I do it because they are human beings and they have feelings. I do it because they are sincere and I try to treat people like I would want to be treated. There will never be anyone like Elvis. E.P. was awesome and is still loved and missed by millions of his fans from all over the world. Thank you so much Spa Guy.

Elvis really liked Shirley because she didn't take any bunk from anyone including him!LOL but he also liked that she was very respectful of his privacy. She always asked permission before taking a picture which wasn't very often. The whole family was so nice to her and looked after her to make sure she was safe. She really had a great mom and knew she could trust her daughter was safe hanging out with Elvis and his crew. That says alot about Elvis for his and the guys Character. She got to go to the movies and fairgrounds when they went too! What a lucky girl!

Very cool. I had often wondered if Elvis had much contact with his neighbors, so it's nice to hear he got to know at least some in the neighborhood and would stop to say hello to them. I bet the neighborhood never quite felt the same after Elvis passed.
