"I've Lost You," written by the English team of Alan Blaikley and Ken Howard, gives the husband's point of view of a marriage that has gone ice cold and is on the verge of quiet collapse. Recorded at a time when Elvis's own marriage was falling apart, the song was well suited to him, and he imbues every note with passion, both in the despairing verses and the sweeping chorus. In the early days of his career, there were so many songs Elvis recorded that only he could have done right. Nobody else could have torn up "Jailhouse Rock" the way he did, for instance. But it wasn't really that way in the later years. There were probably a dozen artists in 1970 who had the chops to sing "I've Lost You" and give it a properly stirring treatment. The difference was that when Elvis was on his game, he just sang it better than almost everyone else would have. And he was on his game here.
